Lesson 2
We Must be Worthy
To Enter the Temple
To enter the temple we must be worthy
When we live in the following ways, our
hearts will be prepared to commune with the
Lord in the Temple
Be Morally Clean
Pay a Full Tithing
Obey the Word of Wisdom
Keep the Sabbath Day Holy
We must be morally clean
“We believe in chastity before marriage and total
fidelity after marriage. That sums it up. That is the way
to happiness in living. That is the way to satisfaction. It
brings peace to the heart and peace to the home”
Conference Report, Oct. 1996, 68; or Ensign, Nov. 1996, 49
Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt
cleave unto her and none else.
And he that looketh upon a woman to lust after her
shall deny the faith, and shall not have the Spirit…
Thou shalt not commit adultery…
(D&C 42:22-24)
We must be morally clean
...let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly... (D&C 121:45)
We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men… (Articles
of Faith 1:13)
no unclean thing can dwell with God (1 Ne 10:21)
We must be morally clean
Why do you think the Lord places so much importance on
moral cleanliness?
“I invite all members of the Church to live
with ever more attention to the life and
example of the Lord Jesus Christ”
President Howard W. Hunter, Conf. Report, Oct. 1994
We must be morally clean
Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say,
Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse... and prove
me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not
open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a
blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive
it. (Malachi 3:8-12)
Tithing: opening windows of heaven
The Lord asks those who
attend the temple to be full
tithe payers...
Why do you think it is
important to the Lord
that we pay tithing?
Tithing: opening windows of heaven
“Tithing is a principle that is fundamental to the
personal happiness and well-being of the Church
members worldwide, both rich and poor. Tithing is
a principle of sacrifice and a key to the opening of
the windows of heaven. … Members of the
Church who do not tithe do not lose their
membership; they only lose blessings”
President James E. Faust, Conference Report, Oct. 1998
Tithing: opening windows of heaven
The Lord asks those who
attend the temple to obey
the Word of Wisdom
Why do you think it is
important to the Lord
that we obey the Word of
Wisdom?
The Word of Wisdom
Obtaining Treasures of Wisdom
“What you learn spiritually depends, to a degree, on how
you treat your body. That is why the Word of Wisdom is so
important.
“The habit-forming substances prohibited by that
revelation—tea, coffee, liquor, tobacco—interfere with the
delicate feelings of spiritual communication, just as other
addictive drugs
will do.
“Do not ignore the Word of Wisdom, for that may cost you
the „great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures‟
promised to those who keep it. And good health is an added
blessing”
Elder Boyd K. Packer in Conference Report, Oct. 1994
Treasures of Knowledge
The Lord asks those who
attend the temple to keep
the Sabbath Day Holy
Why do you think it is
important to the Lord
that we reverence the
Sabbath Day?
The Sabbath Day
“Why has God asked us to honor the Sabbath day? The
reasons I think are at least threefold. The first has to do
with the physical need for rest and renewing. …
“The second reason is, in my opinion, of far greater
significance. It has to do with the need for regeneration and
the strengthening of our spiritual being. …
“The third reason may be the most important of the three.
It has to do with obedience to commandments as an
expression of our love for God. Blessed are those who need
no reasons other than their love for the Savior to keep his
commandments”
President James E. Faust, Conference Report, Oct. 1991
The Sabbath Day
Your Temple Recommend Interview
Two Interviews:
By the bishop
By a member of the stake presidency
We have the privilege of attesting to our worthiness before two witnesses who
are the Lord‟s authorized servants. It is a blessing to us to affirm before the
Lord‟s servants our worthiness to enter the holy temple.
Your Interview for a Recommend
Do you have a testimony? Temple commitments will only have
meaning if we believe it is true.
1. Do you have a testimony of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost?
2. Do you have a testimony of the Atonement of Christ?
3. Do you have a testimony of the restoration of the gospel?
4. Do you sustain the Prophet, his counselors, the Twelve and local leaders?
5. Do you support or agree with people who have apostatized from the Church?
Your Interview for a Recommend
Are you active in the Church and living the gospel?
Do you live a moral and chaste life? Are you honest?
7. Do honestly try to keep the commandments, attend Church meetings, and live the Gospel?
8. Are you honest?
9. Do you pay a full tithe?
10. Are you living a pure and virtuous life and obeying the law of chastity?
11. Do your keep the Word of Wisdom?
Your Interview for a Recommend
Are you fulfilling your role in your family?
12. Is your relationship with your family in harmony with gospel teachings?
Have you repented and are you worthy?
14. If you have committed a serious sin you should confess it to the bishop well in advance of a
temple-recommend interview. If your conscience raises a question in your mind about
whether something should be discussed with the bishop, it should probably be discussed.
However, once discussed, there is no need to discuss it again.
Sins that should be confessed include a moral transgression, abuse of family members, affiliation with
apostate groups or practices, or a serious violations of the laws of the land
