What’s happening at Ascot:
Next Tuesday 17 April Meeting is a Social Breakfast at Café 2 TwentyFour at 224 Belmont Ave. It’s overlooking the roundabout near Red Dot, at the back of Belmont Forum. Come along from 7:15am and enjoy a coffee or something from their All Day Breakfast Menu. Kashinee is coming along to say Hi and let us know what she’s been up to so it’s a great opportunity to bring along your partners too. (If you missed the
write up about Kashinee in the Southern Gazette this week, see Page 2)
The 40th annual tournament of the Australian Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians is underway this week in Murray Bridge, South Australia and our members Aidan, Mike and Jeff and their wives are there representing both our club and Western Australia. Our best wishes to them all for a fabulous week and particularly to Aidan’s wife Tania who is playing in this year’s event for the first time. We know they will all have fun!
Kids from Bruce Rock, Narembeen and Quairading district high schools are being encouraged to participate in the Rotary Wheatbelt Swim for Reading to raise funds for reading programs at their school. Ascot has jumped on board to sponsor a prize for one student to attend this year’s RYPEN camp.

BRICKTOBER 2018
6th and 7th October at Curtin Stadium, off Kent Street, Bentley
Planning is now underway for this year’s major fundraising event for our club and the 2018 Chair of the
Bricktober Committee, Christine Goss, stressed the importance of the full support and participation of every
member and if possible, our partners too. She asked that all members discuss the dates with their families and
set the full weekend aside now to avoid double booking so we can have all hands on deck at the Event. It is a
case of many hands make light work. Your full participation will ensure everyone gets a break over the weekend
and will certainly help to minimize the stress on just a few.
In addition, each member will be assigned to one of the Subcommittees of Operations, Publicity, Exhibitors,
Volunteers, Merchandise, Activities and Vendors and throughout the coming months we will require Members
assistance with small tasks from time to time. There are lots of little jobs to do from washing and sorting bricks
or folding Tshirts, to buying goodies and preparing raffles. It is also important that we spread the word about
this fantastic Event which keeps on giving long after it’s over by visiting other Clubs and attending Publicity Days
at other events like the Train Show and at local shopping centres.
This will be our fifth event and it just gets better and better and the funds we raise have already gone to some
amazing programs helping so many in our community. It is an Event that Ascot can be truly proud of so please
get behind it and pledge your full support to make it stress-free and enjoyable for everyone.
Rivervale resident primed for board role after leadership course
April 10th 2018 Written by Denise S. Cahill Southern Gazette NEWS KASHINEE Veeren has sat on a board before but is now more confident to take up a director position after completing the 2018 Emerging Leaders in Governance Program.
Over four months, the Rivervale resident joined 19 other young professionals in the program, hosted by Southcare, that focused on equipping people with the tools, networks and confidence to lead and govern in the boardroom.
Ms Veeren sat on the Rotary Club of Ascot board when she was 21 and is also a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
She said the Emerging Leaders course had complemented her practical experience and made her more confident to take up a board director position and make a positive difference in the aged care and community services non-for-profit sectors.
“The course has provided me with practical tools and frameworks that I can use immediately to facilitate being an effective board member,” Ms Veeren said.
Alicia Curtis and Southcare chief executive Nicky Howe facilitate the course.

April is Maternal and Child Health Month
Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and
grow stronger. Rotary makes amazing things happen.
We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a
healthy future. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition,
inadequate health care, and poor sanitation — all of which can be prevented.
Brick PlayTubs
Teacher Alison Kerimofski who came along a few
weeks ago to collect two Brick PlayTubs on behalf of
her school, Geographe Education Support Centre in
Busselton, has sent along a few photos of their first
play session. One of the boys built a balloon powered
car and they all watched with delight as it zoomed
around the room. Alison is now considering bringing a
bus load of kids up to visit us at Bricktober!
