Toshiba Viral – Silent Disco
“ A silent disco is a disco where people dance to music listened to on headphones. Rather than using
a speaker system, music is broadcast via an FM transmitter with the signal being picked up by
wireless headphone receivers worn by the partygoers. Those without the headphones hear no music,
giving the effect of a room full of people dancing to nothing. ”
The Idea
A man in his mid-twenties leaves his flat. He is wearing Toshiba wireless headphones around his
neck. As he shuts his front door, the music begins - possibly Daft Punk’s Aerodynamic remix. It starts
quite “tinny” and when he places them on his head the full force of the music can be heard. He turns
and starts to walk down the street. The camera tracks parallel to him so we see the man in profile.
We see him pass a few people also wearing headphones. They share a similar understanding. He
continues to walk down the street when another man leaves his flat, also wearing headphones. The
two men know each other and greet each other with a handshake and a hug and continue to walk
down the street. It starts to get busier and busier with the two men starting to walk through a crowd
of people all wearing headphones. The camera is still on its original track. When the music starts to
get heavier we see that the two men are at an outside party and there is a huge crowd of people, all
wearing headphones, all dancing in rhythm to the music. At the moment I am hoping this area to be
Leicester Square in London, but the location may be likely to change. As silent discos are relatively
easy to set up I would love to focus on their portability by perhaps setting one on the tube and aLondon bus and finish in Leicester square (as an example). We then see the DJ mixing the song. As
the record spins round I would like to place “Innovation is a journey not a destination” onto the
record, either physically or in post-production. Once the party has become established I want to
then cut to a wide shot of the whole crowd. However I want to cut the music and just use the
ambient sound of the party. If not known already, this is when it is revealed that it is just a huge
silent disco and only people wearing headphones can hear the music. I then want to cut back to the
party and cut the music back in. When the song begins to wind down, I want to arrange the people
into the Toshiba arrows. This is when the Toshiba logo and “Leading innovation” will fade in. I may
possibly have the people shout leading innovation, I haven’t decided yet.
Purpose
The purpose of this viral is to take a relatively unknown concept, magnify it and place it in a public
place rather than a club. I have chosen this idea as I believe it is very original and the concept itself is
a product of innovation; Taking something very ordinary and changing a tiny aspect of it creating a
whole new experience. The concept of a silent disco is that it can be relatively set up anywhere so
incorporating this into the London setting could be really exciting. E.g. disco on the tube or disco on
the bus etc.

The Audience
Where the concept and music choice does appeal more to the younger demographic, I feel the
concept carries enough originality to allow the older generations to enjoy seeing this process in
action and how their clubbing days have evolved. I don’t want to just have a crowd of students and
young twenty-year-olds, so this is why the music may be revised into something more popular whilst
still upbeat enough to dance to.
Images
I would like the man’s walk to be completely continues with one long track
To capture the party, I want to combine a series of wide shots of the crowd, a shot from the
DJ’s POV, A camera in the crowd capturing close ups of the party -goers and a camera
capturing passer-by’s reactions.
For the reveal, I am hoping to get a high wide shot showing the whole crowd and the
surroundings. I would like to use this same when the crowd are assembled into the arrows.
Leicester Square – This is where I first thought of setting the disco. The location is subject to change.
A party on the tube – Ours will be a disco and no alcohol will be present.

A London Bus – A possible location for a silent disco
This is the profile track I had in mind.
The amount of people I am envisaging in using, enough to fill the space but not too many to make it
too demanding.

This is where I would like a camera to get some close ups of people in the disco dancing with their
headphones
Toshiba’s Wireless Headphones.
Key Personnel

Conclusion
Thank you very much for reading my treatment, I hope the concept is original and exciting and I very
much hope one way or another I will be able to make this viral. If this project does go ahead, as soon
as I find a shoot date I will let everyone know and you can all come down and experience the silent
disco first hand!
