Fall – New Beginnings! These are exciting times here at Church of the Good Shepherd. We sent out an excellent Christian Education for Youth survey composed by Lori Bathurst. We got good feedback that is leading us in exciting new directions. We hope to encourage more people to try teaching Sunday School by shortening the sessions to 5 weeks. We are looking at new curriculums (there are enough out there to make your head spin!). We are looking at ways to support each other. No longer do you pick up your materials and “Ready, set, go – hope for the best!” No! We are setting up teacher mentors and a Pinterest page online. No longer do you need to fear looking up at those expectant faces alone, armed with only markers and construction paper and that familiar fear of impending failure slithering around you. Oh no! You’ve got this! We have been investigating different curriculums and perhaps coming up with some lessons of our own. We will begin by keeping the readings from the Lectionary at the heart of our curriculum, but how can we branch out from those readings giving our kids new ideas, new points of view to think about? How can we encourage fresh discussion? We never really know how much we know or how well we know it until we try to teach it to someone else. There is nothing to compare with the excitement of watching those brain cell light bulbs switch on when your kids “get” an idea or a concept. Or better yet, when they get it so well that it leads them to more questions! Or even better ideas! Teaching can be so exciting. May I encourage you to consider signing up for one of our sessions? Better yet, find a teaching buddy and sign up with them! You won’t regret it. And to all you parents out there…. Please consider… Our schools do the best job they can to teach our children a variety of ideas and skills, but our schools do not give our children a spiritual education. Oh, our kids may pick up some good examples about ethics from history lessons and admirable teachers, but not much attention is paid to the cultivation of the soul. It’s only in church where those lessons are taught and learned. We have a huge responsibility here. We believe that children are born in relationship with God. It’s our job to encourage and cultivate that relationship. As one of our very excellent teachers once said, “If our children leave here on Sunday knowing in their hearts that God loves them, we have done our jobs.” We teach God’s love as Jesus taught it, through parables, storytelling and discussion. We may use books, pictures, videos, music, whatever works. Karl Barth was one of the great theologians of the 20th century. After one of his lectures he was asked by a student if he could sum up his life’s work in theology in a single sentence. Barth replied, “Yes. Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”
Come be a part of this! Be a Teacher! Be a Learner! Bring Learners! Sign up this Sunday! Every Sunday!

Uppity Women of the Bible
Women's Thursday Bible Study will resume on Thursday, September 8th with the study of the Book of Judith. Our series is presented by Dr. Lisa Wolfe. She describes this book this way: "Judith, from the Koine Greek version of the Hebrew Testament reads like a historical novel rife with warfare, lust, espionage and intrigue. This six-week series takes you from a mythological battlefield and a besieged city into the studio and psyche of the Baroque painter Artemesia Gentilschi." We'll actually be doing this series in five weeks. Many participate in Morning Prayer first. The class begins at 9:30 and lasts one hour. For questions, contact Mel Caron at 478-234-3698 or [email protected].
Church History Display
I hope that you have had a chance to see the
exhibit currently on display in the glass case in
the parish hall! We are using that space to
share our past with all of our church family at
Good Shepherd! I have enough items for only
two more displays. They are rotated every 3 or
4 months. This is a great way to share our
common past with each other. If you have
anything that you wish to share, old Baptismal
certificates, pictures of church events, Sunday
school curriculum, Bibles, Prayer Books, etc,
please let me know. I will make sure that your
articles are returned to you unharmed. Thanks
so much!

Prayers for the Parish Families
For September
Nelson family, Newkirk family, Nicolle family, and Opel family
OUR PRAY-ERS MINISTRY
Each Sunday during Communion time, our team of Pray-ers offer prayers with our parishioners. We have now expanded this meaningful ministry to our Saturday evening Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm.
After you receive Holy Communion, if you want/need additional prayers, there will be a team of Pray-ers in the rear of the Church who are willing to offer prayers for you. These prayers can be offered in joy for a Blessing you have received, or can be to help ease a burden which lies on your heart. Please take advantage of this wonderful ministry of our parish. All prayers are confidential.
Pray-er Ministry
Anyone interested in being a Pray-er Minister at the Saturday night or Sunday services please contact Cindy Taglienti @ 227-1566 or [email protected].
The Food Pantry
The Food Pantry always needs tuna, canned
fruit and vegetables, macaroni & cheese,
peanut butter, jelly and juice. They are also
in need of volunteers to help with the Food
Pantry on Tuesday evenings to give out food.
They are open on even dated Tuesdays each
month from 6pm – 7pm.
Saturday Morning Movie
SATURDAY MORNING MOVIE will take place
on Saturday, September 10, 9:30-11:30 in the
Parish Hall. Breakfast will be provided. We
will once again be watching a presentation by
Pastor Rob Bell entitled "Everything Is
Spiritual". There is no word in the Hebrew
Scriptures for "Spiritual". And Jesus never
used the phrase "spiritual life." Because for
Jesus and his tradition, all of life is spiritual.
So what does that mean? Rob Bell will share
with us his understanding on this question in a
way that is informative, funny and extremely
thought-provoking. For questions, contact Mel
Caron.
Coffee Hour
Just a reminder that Coffee Hour is a service
that is supplied cost-free to you thanks to the
donations of time and supplies by the hosts and
coffee hour assistants. If you enjoy the coffee
hours but are not able to be a host or assistant,
you can always be a help by donating cans of
coffee, paper plates, 9-10 oz. cups, coffee
creamer, baked items, or fruit every once in a
while. If you want to be a host or assistant on a
regular basis (about once every ten-twelve
weeks) let one of the coffee hour volunteers
know. Thanks to all of the volunteers for making
the coffee hours enjoyable.
Summer is almost over, but we still need to keep
our Lawn-Mowing Schedule going. If you are
interested and available to help out with mowing
the Church grounds please add your name to the
Mowing List in the Parish Hall. Thanks in advance!

Prayer Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry
Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other Tuesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them.
I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere.
If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood.
Page Turners’ Book Group
The Page Turners meet once a month, immediately following the 10am Holy Eucharist, in the Conference Room. Please come and join us for some very interesting discussion, exchange of ideas and sharing.
On Sunday, September 18 we will discuss THESE IN MY WORDS by Nancy E. Turner. At this meeting we will be looking for suggestions of new books for the coming months. So please come with suggestions.
INQUIRER'S CLASS
INQUIRER'S CLASS will meet on September 4th after the 10 AM service. The Class will focus on "Out into the World: Challenge Facing Progressive Christians."

OUTREACH
Thank you so much for your continuous generous donations of clothing for the people of Camden. We now take the clothing to St Wilfrid’s Episcopal Church in Camden. They are very grateful for everything that is sent and are quickly able to find those who can benefit from some new clothing! They are in desperate need of men’s shoes! PLEASE, if you have shoes that are in good condition, won’t you consider donating them? The last time that Carl was there an elderly gentleman came in with no shoes, just bare feet, looking for something to wear and they had nothing to give to him. Carl’s shoes were too small for his feet or he said that he would have taken them off and driven home in his socks! It is terrible to think of someone in the city walking around with bare feet.
If you have items to donate, please place them in manageable size bags, on our front porch and we will be happy to take them for you! We live at 223 Highland Terrace, Pitman.

Contemplative Prayer Time Before Our Worship Services
For those who seek a time for quiet prayer on Saturdays and Sundays, from now on Mother Susan will open the church on Saturdays at 4:30 PM for the 5:30 PM service. We ask that 4:30 to 5:15 be a quiet prayerful time. Likewise, for Sundays, she will be in the Church at 9 AM for a quiet time from 9 to 9:30. We ask that all who come early to church honor these times as times for quiet prayer and contemplation.

Let’s Cool Down the Parish Hall!
Our Parish Hall is a great space for us to enjoy fellowship, but it’s an uncomfortable and underutilized space during the heat of the summer. However, hallelujah! An anonymous parish member has offered a generous donation towards air conditioning! We need your help to reach the total needed. The total additional monies we need are approximately $7000. We are now almost halfway! So we are asking you to consider a special donation to the Parish Hall AC Fund. We will not begin the project until we have the needed funds in hand.
If you want to donate, please put “Parish Hall AC Fund” on the memo line of your check. You will find a thermometer in the Parish Hall that tracks our progress. Unlike others where you see the temperature rise toward the goal in red, this one will show the temperature falling in blue! We want to thank you in advance for your donation.

Pitman – Glassboro CROP Hunger Walk (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty)
It's that time of year again. The air is crisp, the leaves are falling and the CROP Walk is upon us. Sunday October 16th is the date. Hopefully you will mark your calendar and join us for either a 1 mile or 5 mile walk in an effort to curb hunger. If you are unable to walk and would like to contribute to someone who is walking or to the Good Shepherd team that would be greatly appreciated too. If you Google on your computer or phone Pitman-Glassboro CROP Hunger Walk you can donate on line to either an individual or the team. It's an easy and quick way to contribute. Of course you can also always give a walker a check or cash. Let's set a goal of $3,000.00 this year and 27 walkers. Thank you in advance for your participation. If you have any questions please contact Gail Morton or Connie Parent. P.S. The annual cookie sale that supports the Crop Walk is September 17th. If you are willing to bake your favorite cookies they would be most appreciated. They are to be in sandwich bags of four each and it would be very helpful if you would let us know what they are. (Not in every bag, just once) They can be put in the screened in porch in the back of Connie’s house the evening of the 16th. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks to all who have donated so
generously to the Pitman pantry.

So because you have been so wonderful, we

Congratulations to Deb Prieto
For over thirty years, Gloucester County women’s organizations have recognized women for their outstanding contributions to their professional field, humanitarianism, and contributions to the community. In the past several years, the honorees were nominated and selected by the Gloucester County Commission for Women and the Gloucester County branch of the American Association of University Women.
Our own Deb Prieto has been selected to receive a 2016 Woman of Achievement Award for dedicating her professional skills to improving the lives of children and their families. As a pediatric ophthalmologist she has improved or preserved the eyesight of many, many children who have the potential for richer, fuller lives because of the care they received at Deb’s capable hands.
We at Good Shepherd know that Deb is a truly dedicated Christian who gives freely of her time and talents to the Church. Her big smile, good humor, grace, and faith serve as inspirations to the whole Good Shepherd family.
Recipients of the Awards will be honored at a dinner and ceremony at Auletto’s Caterers on Thurs., Oct. 13th. Please let Deb, Maryanne, or Sue Dixon know if you would like to receive a ticket. Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for Gloucester County women.
