GustoMSC is to take the wraps off a new jack-up vessel design (illustrated, right) equipped to install next-generation turbines and foundations.
The Dutch ship designer and engineer will launch the new NG-20000X at Offshore Wind Energy 2017 in London this week.
The jack-up will feature an integrated telescopic leg crane that will be able to lift up to 1250 tonnes when the boom is stretched to 160 metres. Loads can double to 2500 tonnes at 120 metres.
GustoMSC said the design means the vessel is capable of installing next-generation turbines in the 10MW-plus category when the boom is fully extended as the crane maintains adequate lifting height and capacity for the job.
“Key to the new approach is to stop the spiralling trend of growing crane weights due to the increasing requirements related to the heavy foundations and high installation heights, and to stay close to the proven design technology at the same time,” said GustoMSC
commercial director Jan-Mark Meeuwisse.
“By scaling up the jack-up design and jacking system and solving the challenging crane requirements in an innovative manner, the NG-20000X represents the next-generation wind turbine installation jack-up in all its facets.”
The vessel will also feature a variable load capacity of
16,500 tonnes that will enable transportation of six complete sets of turbine components or up to seven large jacket foundations.
This will reduce installation costs, the company predicted.
GustoMSC added the NG-20000X is its response to a “rapidly” changing market that requires new heavy-lift vessels to deal with bigger loads and installation heights.

Engineering company Atkins will showcase the first version of its new software for optimising the layout and construction of wind farms at Offshore Wind Energy 2017.
A 12-week collaboration with Silicon Valley outfit Aditazz has resulted in a package that is now ready for market testing. Atkins engineers gave the US programmers a set of ‘rules’ for wind farm construction, which were used to create algorithms capable of calculating the effects of changing project variables.
“If it is decided that a cable or turbine needs to be moved the software can quickly run the numbers and find the best layout,” Atkins market lead for offshore and onshore Andy Thompson told renews.
The software has uses beyond wind farm design, he added. “It allows investors to quickly calculate the
capital and operational expenditure projects need while landowners can also use it to determine the net worth of their assets.”
The company will be seeking co-investors at Offshore Wind Energy 2017 to help move the project to its next stage of development.
n Turbine manufacturers are attending Offshore Wind Energy 2017 in London this week as discussions focus on next-generation 10MW-plus hardware.
Siemens, MHI Vestas, Senvion and GE are all working on new platforms that will stretch into double figures to be available in the next decade.
Germany’s Senvion had been expected to unveil its next-generation offering at OWE2017 but may now hold fire, it is understood.
Siemens and MHI Vestas
will discuss upgrades to their existing platforms at the event with the latter having already launched a 9MW version of its V164 model earlier in the year.
n WindEurope chief executive Giles Dickson will appeal to European governments at Offshore Wind Energy 2017 to unlock the true potential of offshore wind.
The lobby group will present the findings of research that identifies three areas in the Baltic Sea, North Sea and Atlantic as key to the industry’s growth in the next decade.
“To unleash this potential, governments have to provide a continuous, ambitious and visible pipeline of offshore wind projects to 2030 and beyond and cooperate on spatial planning and grid infrastructure,” Dickson will say.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has confirmed a so-called extended scope contract that includes the supply of turbines and an offshore transformer module to EnBW’s 112MW Albatros wind farm in the German North Sea.
The deal was first revealed by subscriber-only newsletter renews earlier this year.
Under the contract, SGRE is supplying 16 of its 7MW offshore turbines, monopile foundations and the OTM.
The latter kit is the first time the scaled-down transformer platform will be installed in German waters.
GeoSea has been sub-contracted to supply and install the turbine foundations. Installation is to
start in spring 2018 at a site 90km north of Borkum Island in water depths of 40 metres.
SGRE also holds a similar contract at the developer’s nearby 497MW Hohe See wind farm.
“Albatros allows us to demonstrate our broad competence in offshore projects, ranging from project-specific engineering services and the beneficial combination of power generation and transmission technology to service and maintenance concepts,” said SGRE offshore chief Michael Hannibal.
The company’s offshore boss will take part in a panel discussion at the opening session on day one of Offshore Wind Energy 2017.
Developers in Massachusetts are busy gathering data to support sites likely to feature in the US state’s coming call for up to 800MW of offshore wind.
Marine contractor Alpine Ocean has started an export cable reconnaissance survey for Dong Energy’s 2GW Bay State project.
Federal regulators are also reviewing a site assessment plan after deeming the application complete in May.
The Danish developer will shortly deploy two Axys Technologies WindSentinel lidar buoys and a Triaxys wave and current device to collect
wind resource and metocean data.
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Iberdrola have also scheduled marine surveys this year for their 1.5GW Vineyard project to the south-east of the Dong zone.
Regulators are currently assessing the project’s site assessment plan application.
US outfit Deepwater Wind, the third leaseholder off Massachusetts, has lined up Fugro to conduct a marine geophysical and geotechnical investigation within its 1.5GW site this summer.
Auction bids will be due in December and regulators are
expected to select projects in May 2018 for 15 to 20-year contracts. The state is seeking at least 400MW in the first round but could double that if a large-scale development proves “superior”.
Massachusetts plans to add 1.6GW of offshore wind capacity by 2027. A second call for project proposals will be held in 2019.

Record-low bids in offshore wind auctions around Europe are intensifying pressure on turbine manufacturers to deliver faster reductions in the levelised cost of energy as the industry gears up for a subsidy-free future, as detailed in the renews Offshore Technology Yearbook 2017 out this week.
The latest 6MW to 8MW-plus machines are the models of choice for the current offshore fleet but are likely to make way in the next decade
for 10MW to 12MW-plus hardware.
OTY2017 reveals how turbine suppliers are already responding to the cost-cutting mantra by offering extended product lifecycles via upgrades and optimisation options before the new giants come along.
Suppliers that have already fired the start gun on 10MW next-generation turbines will need to install prototypes in 2018 or 2019 if predictions of first commercial serial
deployments in 2023-24 are to prove feasible, the special report adds.
Technical routes to 10MW-plus turbines include upgrades of power rating and rotor diameter, as well as choices for upwind/downwind configuration, number of blades and drive train.
Conventional three-bladed upwind designs currently
dominate and appear to offer a logical future direction for next-generation kit in terms of development time, cost and risk.
OTY2017 for the first time also includes comprehensive listings of floating wind concepts, installation vessels and fabrication yards active in the offshore wind industry.
In the floating arena, spar
buoys, semi-submersible and tension leg platforms are the three main categories for foundations.
Offshore wind installation vessels have meanwhile kicked off a packed construction campaign that is likely to keep the major players busy for the rest of the decade.
OTY2017 details how competition in the sector remains fierce for the limited number of pre-2020 jobs amid growing renewables interest from idle oil and gas jack-up operators.
The yearbook also tracks how fabrication yards across Europe are exploring new ways to cut costs ahead of the inevitable belt-tightening that is coming down the track.
Yards are in the midst of busy fabrication campaigns to meet delivery dates for the current batch of offshore wind farms that are due to be operational by 2020 but continue to look further ahead with new low-cost design work ongoing in conjunction with turbine manufacturers and developers.

European supply chain companies are well placed to secure work in the rapidly growing Chinese market, Offshore Wind Energy 2017 will hear.
The country already boasts 2GW of operational projects but is likely to require outside expertise as it works towards a 5GW installed capacity target by 2020.
The Market Developments in China session is taking place on conference day one at 16:30 in Room 11.
Chaired by Catriona Knox of the UK’s Department of International Trade, the session will feature contributions from a range of major Chinese industry players.
Attendees will hear how the country is projected to be the world’s largest offshore wind market within a decade but suffers from a series of supply chain gaps that could offer
opportunities to experienced European companies.
Opportunities in Taiwan will also be discussed at OWE2017 during the Global Market Developments session on Wednesday at 09:30 in Room 11.
The country is already on the hunt for international
HEADING EAST: GeoSea jack-up Goliath (above) is hitching a ride to China to help build a wind farm off the country’s east coast.
The DEME group vessel was loaded onto Cosco semi-submersible heavy-lift specialist Kang Sheng Kou in the Dutch port of Vlissingen in late May.
Goliath is bound for a Cosco shipyard near Shanghai where she will be fitted with a fresh set of spud cans and given new lifeboats before beginning construction work at a currently unnamed project this October.
The job marks the first fruits of a joint venture agreement signed between the two shipping
companies in November. The partners are hoping to develop, build and maintain future offshore wind projects in China’s seas.
“This is an excellent opportunity for export experience gained on projects in Europe and our home market in Belgium,” said DEME group chief executive Alain Bernard.
An offshore wind mission from the Netherlands has meanwhile completed a visit to the Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Fujian.

expertise to help domestic banks put together project finance packages for the local offshore industry, said Yen-Haw Chen of the economy ministry’s National Renewable Energy Certification centre.
“The government is trying to help build capacity to enable local banks to have the opportunity to offer project finance to offshore wind developers,” he added.
Taiwan is aiming to unlock 3GW of offshore wind capacity by 2025.
The ministry has to date received 22 applications to build up to 10.24GW of projects, around half of which are from international big-hitters such as Dong and Northland Power.
