A welcome to We Are Surrey by Councillor Peter Martin, Chairman of Surrey
County Council (SCC).
Councillor Martin will share SCC’s vision to see businesses, statutory
organisations and the charity sector working together with their local
communities to make Surrey a better place to live and work
Peter is the Chairman of Surrey County Council, holding this position since May 2017.
Immediately prior to taking on the Chairmanship, Peter was the Deputy Leader of Surrey County Council
and also had the portfolio responsibility for Business and the Economy. He served in the Cabinet from
2007-2017 and has had responsibility for the Environment and for Children and Learning. He was elected
to the County Council in a by election in September 2005 and represents Godalming South, Milford and
Witley. Additionally he is a member of Waverley Borough and Godalming Town Councils. He was the
Mayor of Godalming in 2005. Peter was for 5 years a Board Member of the Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise
Partnership. He is also Chairman of Governors of St Catherine’s School in Bramley, Guildford – a 900
strong independent girls’ school.
Peter is a graduate of Durham University holding an Honours degree in Geography and is also a Chartered
Certified Accountant. After graduation he taught in Khartoum, Sudan for 2 years under the auspices of
Voluntary Service Overseas. He worked in the international IT industry for over 30 years holding senior
management positions in Finance and Marketing in London, Paris and New York.
Peter is married with three now grown up children and four grandchildren and lives in Godalming. His son
is the Deputy Leader of Waverley Borough Council and also a former Mayor of Godalming in 2013. Peter is
a keen musician and a sportsman – though the latter is more now from the armchair than the sportsfield
especially as he recently “celebrated” his 70th birthday.
Peter started life on the left of politics – his father was a shop steward in the Cowley car factories (now the
BMW Mini plant!) and secretary of the local Labour party. He saw the light while at University and has
since supported the Conservative party!

Social Value at BDO
Nick Poulter, Partner at BDO, shares on their culture of social responsibility
and the innovative ways they are working with their employees to make a difference.
It is important to everyone who works at or for BDO to work for a socially responsible organisation.
BDO are committed to making a real and sustainable difference and understand that the talent and
energy they have can contribute to the kind of society we all want to live in.
Learn from the huge array of opportunities BDO provide to allow their organisation to make a big
difference, including tax-free charitable donations for staff, placements for injured service personnel,
ten days a year volunteering for each employee, fundraising activities, skills sharing, ISO14001
certification and donating grants of over £60,000 in 2016/17.
Social Value at Belron
Carolyn Johnston, Corporate Responsibility Executive for Belron, explains what
social value means to them and the multitude of ways they are giving back to
communities.
For Belron, being responsible in how they do business is critical. They aim to do
the right thing every day and to ensure we behave with integrity in everything
that they do.
Corporate Responsibility isn’t an initiative within Belron, it is what they believe in
and aspire to. They have formalised our approach into four strong corporate
responsibility commitments that guide all of our day-to-day operations:
Environment, Giving Back, Our Way of Working (Ethics) and, underpinning all of
these, Our People.
Social Value at Surrey County Council
Cindy Nadesan, Contract and Supply Specialist at Surrey County Council, explains
their vision for social value as part of the procurement approach.
Surrey County Council aims to support the public, business and voluntary, community and faith
sectors (VCFS) in Surrey to work together to maximise how our resources improve the wellbeing,
economic prosperity and local environment for our residents and communities.
As part of their response to the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012 they are promoting social value
opportunities based on needs which will have a real impact and benefit to local communities.
Want to celebrate how you’ve been supporting local
communities? Our Hall of Fame is your chance to do just that.
We know that many businesses are already working with communities to help make Surrey a better place
to live and work. We’d love to hear about what’s been happening, so we can celebrate the great
contribution you’ve made to Surrey.
The Hall of Fame is your chance to showcase what you’ve been doing. To take part, all you need to do is:
Identify something you want to share
Create a poster that tells everyone what you did and what difference it has made.
Bring it along and add it to the Hall of Fame.
Some guidance on creating your poster…
The Hall of Fame will be displayed on a wall. So your poster needs to be able to be stuck up on the
wall using blu-tac.
The display will be static – you will not be expected to man your display throughout the event.
Instead we want you stick it up and then be free to take part in the other activities, connect, and
go away inspired.
You can include as much or as little – you could share a story, pin up photos, include data or
anything else you can think of. All we want is to know what you’ve done and the difference it has
made to Surrey residents.
For Surrey providers, your poster will be noted as part of your social value contribution. Speak to
Cindy Nadesan for more details ([email protected]).
