Reddish Hall School had its first OFSTED inspection between 22nd and 24th November and we are pleased to say that we were found to be OUTSTANDING in all areas. The inspector commented on how our students “thrive and achieve” and the “calm, purposeful atmosphere in the school where everyone works together.”

Needless to say we are very proud of this achievement and would like to thank parents, carers, professionals and especially our students. Everyone has worked incredibly hard to make the school such a success and will continue to do so, especially as we have a lot of exciting times ahead with the opening of the primary building in September this year!

The report is available online and copies are being sent to parents, carers and other professionals, but here are a few of the comments made by lead inspector, Maggie Parker:

• The quality of teaching, learning and assessment is consistently highly effective within all subjects and for all key stages.

• Many pupils make up for any lost learning in previous school. They develop very positive learning habits.

• The complex behaviour of most pupils is quickly transformed when they start Reddish Hall School, so they are able to learn

• A spirit of inclusion and equality pervades the school. Leaders capitalise on positive relationships with staff, parents and all linked professionals.

• Leaders have high expectations and aspirations and a profound and well-justified belief that every child and young person can learn and achieve. They are not disappointed.

• The large majority of pupils make rapid progress once the barriers to learning are removed. This can happen within weeks of starting Reddish Hall School.

New ICT SuiteVery excitingly, the long awaited ICT suite opened this term. The ICT suite had a brand new refit with bespoke new desks and eight new computers have been installed. To accompany the new hardware we have purchased a suite of new design software to ensure pupils at Reddish Hall can benefit the latest web development and video editing software whilst they journey through the curriculum. Whilst the ICT suite will be ultimately used by the Computer Science and Design Technology departments all departments in both the primary and secondary school will be able to access the ICT suite with their classes.

Remembrance DayStaff, pupils and guests remembered the fallen on the 11th November. The school has its own war memorial in the hall, naming the men from Reddish who returned and fell in the First World War. In fact, during this war, the school was actually used as a military hospital.

Pupils and staff listened to various readings and poems not just centred on soldiers from World War 1, but men and women who fought recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. We were joined by our local MP, Andrew Gwynne and several ex-students from North Reddish Council School who left in 1949.

ChristmasSanta visited the Reddish Hall primary department to find out what the children wanted for Christmas. He even gave them a little present! It seems that Miss Mistry enjoyed the visit from Santa more than some of the children!

You can also see Iris and Drew getting in the Christmas spirit wearing their Santa hats.

Peter Pan PantomimeThe whole school went to see Peter Pan at the Stockport Plaza for their Christmas pantomime. They thoroughly enjoyed the show, the effects and the experience of being in a theatre. Hopefully there will be more opportunities to visit the theatre during the next couple of terms.

Museum of Science & IndustryPrimary 2 paid a visit to the museum of science and industry. They represented the school perfectly by behaving very well. We saw lots of demonstrations including a steam engine, an old steam train and a demonstration of how the machines worked in the old cotton mills.

The ‘experiment’ room was by far their favourite as they were able to get stuck in using all of the equipment, which was really hands on. It was a lovely day and the children made us very proud.

OptionsThis term during options we have visited the farm and had fun with lots of animals. The new baby goats were a favourite by everyone! This time we learnt a lot about their Shetland pony, who we were able to brush and stroke, we also got in the pen with the pig and we fed it it’s lunch.

Primary 2 have been learning about healthy and unhealthy foods. We have looked at ideas how to make some of our favourite foods healthy. We decided that we would make pizzas and we would make them healthier by using wholemeal flour and adding toppings like chicken, sweetcorn, peppers, onions and mushrooms. The children really enjoyed making these and they were delicious!

Pizza Making

Food TechnologyWe have been busy with food technology this term making all sorts from scratch. We have weighed, kneaded, measured, mixed, stirred, cracked, whisked our way to some delicious dishes.

Imperial War MuseumSome of the primary 1 and primary 2 children visited the imperial war museum this term where we met a 94 year old veteran who told us all about his experiences being a solider in the war. Surprisingly he told us that the food was always good and they never went without. Inside the museum there were various artefacts from the many wars and they had a large piece of metal which was a window frame from the twin towers building.

London Trip & EU Mock Council

Two of our students, accompanied by Mr Norbury and Miss Duffy, attended the EU Mock Council in Westminster, London. At the Mock Council, organised by the British Council and Etwinning, 30 schools were each assigned the role of an EU member state. Reddish Hall were asked to represent Bulgaria. We were given two topics for discussion, which our students researched in order to represent their country at the council meeting.

Sam and Luke were the students chosen to represent us. Both students were absolutely exceptional, stepping up to the task and speaking publically in a room full of strangers!

Reddish Hall School are unbelievably proud of the effort, confidence and maturity that both students showed on the day. With other schools and professionals at the event commenting on how wonderful they were.

Thanks to Mr Norbury’s skillful planning, we also managed to fit in a little sightseeing. Visiting the Queen, Theresa May, St Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben and Piccadilly Circus.

Well done Sam and Luke, we’re very proud of you!

This half term in literature, we have been developing our reading skills and enjoying our literature units.

S1 have been reading Of Mice and Men and studying its context of 1930s America. We have been enjoying looking closely at the era and at Steinbeck’s language. We have also enjoyed watching the film version very much.

In S2 we have been studying Gothic Literature. First we asked what was meant by Gothic Literature as a genre and then we delved into 3 major Gothic texts, studying 3 characters closely. We looked at extracts from Frankenstein, The Woman in Black and Dracula. We then explored how the writers created these supernatural characters in different ways.

In S3 we have been studying the GCSE text ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. We investigated how the Victorians celebrated Christmas and looked at changes that were brought about because of the book. We then closely explored how Dickens develops the main character, Scrooge, and how his changes over the chapters help readers to feel sympathy for him.

Next term, we will be focusing on our Literacy skills as well as studying different types of poetry.

English

MathsSecondary have all worked really hard this term, competing for their maths stars. Gaining stars for staying focused in lessons, completing exceptional work and completing work outside of lessons.

All our classes have gained lots of stars! However Secondary 3 stole the lead. With the ‘star’ pupil being Liam, followed closely by Brandon and Luke in second place and Hamza in third.

Well done Secondary! Let’s see if you can step up the competition next term.

ScienceIn KS3 we looked at a unit investigating inheritance:

In lesson one we defined species and variation, explained the importance of diversity and identified the differences between different species.

In lesson two we looked at types of variation and explained the difference between continuous and discontinuous variation, investigated variation within a species and evaluated the importance of variation in organisms

In lesson three we investigated causes of variation and identified some of the features of organisms that are inherited and some that are determined by their environment, understood that offspring from the same parents may show considerable variation and evaluated the importance of genetic and environmental variation to the survival of the organism.

In lesson four we looked at inheritance and identified inherited features in plants and animals that vary between offspring, explained how inherited differences arise by genetic material from both parents combining and describe how identical twins occur and analyse data about their features

In lesson five we looked at in-depth genetics and identified that the nucleus contains chromosomes which carry inherited genetic information, explained that chromosomes are made of genes containing DNA, described the structure of DNA and we assessed the work of Wilkins, Franklin, Watson, and Crick on DNA structure

And finally in lesson six we studies chromosomes and identified that, at fertilisation, one chromosome in each pair comes from each parent and explained how fertilisation results in each new individual being genetically unique and explained how some genetic disorders arise.

Reddish Vale FarmOur Key Stage 4 students have continued with their Horticulture studies this term. It’s been an exciting term, with all students making great progress towards their qualification, gaining confidence, team work skills and practical skills.

In December, there were three surprise arrivals in the form of baby goats (kids). Two males and one female! Students and staff from Reddish Hall entered a Christmas Fayre competition to name the twins, and won! Meet Jingle and Belle!

Finding out where people like to go on holiday. What was tourism like in the past and how has it changed? To understand how and why tourism has changed over the years. The advantages and disadvantages of tourism. To recognise the advantages and disadvantages that tourism can bring to an area and understand what the term honeypot means. Why are National Parks so popular? To understand what a National Park is, the activities that take place in one, and the conflicts that can occur in them. What is eco-tourism and understand what is meant by the term ecotourism. Should tourism in Antarctica be banned? To understand the impacts of tourism on Antarctica and debate whether tourism should be banned, and finally, what makes a good tourist attraction? To understand the factors involved in creating a good tourist attraction.

RewardsOur end of term trip was to Jump Heaven, a huge, amazing and exciting trampoline park. The children had a lovely time and enjoyed a McDonald’s and an ice cream afterwards for their super behaviour all term!

We also had a visit from ‘Minnie’ who is a 9 week old Chihuahua x Border terrier puppy. The children were very excited to see her and looked after her really well all day and were very kind and caring towards her.
