THE THOMPSON FAMILY

The sun was shining and my wife was dressed, all ready to go. It was the first morning of our honeymoon and we had the whole day planned. But I was in so much pain I couldn’t get out of bed. All I could think was, “Oh no. Not another flare-up.”

Back in university, I’d been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease — doctors told me I had hundreds of bleeding ulcers throughout my digestive tract. WHAT??! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I was scared and my mind was racing: How did I get this disease? Would I ever feel like my old self again? What would the future bring? As you can imagine, my parents were devastated too.

Then it got worse.

My older brother Greg was diagnosed with colitis in 2012. Two years later my younger brother, Graham, was diagnosed with Crohn’s. One by one, we succumbed to debilitating pain and weakness. And we all worried about my sister, Kathleen. Would she end up getting sick too? Sometimes, Mom and Dad feel overwhelmed. There’s nothing they can do, except love and support us.

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis have changed our family forever. It’s brought us closer, but we suffer together and we never take the good days for granted.

As you read this, my wife and I welcomed our first child. It’s a joyful time, but we’re also afraid. What if our son gets sick and has to live with unbearable pain? Crohn’s and colitis tend to run in families and we don’t want to see these diseases harm another family or the next generation of our own.

That said, there is one thing that gives us hope and that’s you. Thank you for considering to support innovative research aimed at finding new treatments and cures for both Crohn’s and colitis. It’s no exaggeration to say that my family loves you for giving to this cause.

When my brothers and I are in remission, we appreciate every moment. The simplest thing like a sunny day or being able to enjoy a meal gives us hope.

I’m very grateful that my family and I don’t have to face Crohn’s and colitis alone; we know you’re on our side. If you or someone you love is suffering, I hope you’re reassured by the fact that researchers are fighting hard for cures. Please support important research once again — research that will spare other families pain and agony.

With thanks,

Stephen ThompsonPatient and Supporter

Crohn’s and Colitis Canada is the only national, volunteer-based charity focused on finding the cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and improving the lives of children and adults affected by these diseases. With 1 in 150 Canadians living with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis – Canada has more reasons to be concerned than any other country in the world.

With the help of our donors and corporate friends, we are transforming the lives of people affected by Crohn’s and colitis (the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease) through research, patient programs, advocacy, and awareness. As one of the top two health charity funders of Crohn’s and colitis research in the world, investing over $115 million in research since 1974, we are leading the way to important breakthroughs in genetics, gut microbes, inflammation and cell repair as well as laying the groundwork for new and better treatments.

Our promise, our raison d’etre, is to cure Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Join us!To learn more about becoming a sponsor or how you can get involved, please contact us.

We hope you’ll be a part of this spectacular evening.
