EVANGELINES Evangelical United Church of Christ
APRIL 2017
VOLUME 61 ISSUE 4
We are God’s New Creation
London businessman Lindsay Clegg told the story of a warehouse property he was selling. The building had been empty for months and needed repairs. Vandals had damaged the doors, smashed the windows, and strewn trash around the interior. As he showed a prospective buyer the property, Clegg took pains to say that he would replace the broken windows, bring in a crew to correct any structural damage, and clean out the garbage. "Forget about the repairs," the buyer said. "When I buy this place, I'm going to build something completely different. I don't want the building; I want the site." Compared with the renovation God has in mind, our efforts to improve our own lives are as trivial as sweeping a warehouse slated for the wrecking ball. When we become God's, the old life is over (2 Cor. 5:17). He makes all things new. All he wants is the site and the permission to build. (Ian L. Wilson) Easter is just a few weeks away. We will soon be celebrating the new life Jesus offers to us through his rising from the dead. Jesus is risen and we are risen with him. Our Lenten season has given us the opportunity to look at ourselves more closely and prepare for what we can become. So who are we trying to become as a church? How can the new life Jesus offers to us affect us as his living breathing body? Here at EvUCC our vision is: “EvUCC Feeds the Need”. What ways are we being creative with the new life Jesus offers us by feeding the need? We need to continue to find creative ways to reach out to those around us. That might mean a radical renovation in what we can become. It means continuing to reinvent ourselves into the image of Jesus Christ. Our church is a living breathing system and any system requires energy to flow in and out of it to be healthy and productive. My hope for us is that we allow energy to move within us freely and take risks in the ways we serve others. Jesus calls to us to think bigger than ourselves. We have been definitely moving in that direction but there is much work to be done. Let us continue as a church to embrace the new life Jesus offers to each and every one of us so Jesus can help us build a site that is worthy of his praise. Peace in the Risen Christ! Pastor Chris

True Story: When I was younger (probably ages 8-12), my goal in life, nay, my ideal job…was to
“be the guy who sat in a white van outside of people’s houses and listen to their conversations.” This has been a family-joke for a while, though admittedly as I write it…it strikes me as pretty creepy. Surely some cartoon or movie had influenced me in a way where I thought listening in on people without them knowing was a good idea whereas part of my real job now is purposefully listening with people.
Listening is a skill that I have to work on, which is a diplomatic way of saying; I’m not always very good at it. My hearing is fairly decent, and I can usually regurgitate what someone just said to me, but the internal question is usually, “Did I listen to what was said?” and often as importantly, “what wasn’t said.”
I try to listen to my wife. She’s a ton of fun to talk with in the first place, but sometimes I have to work on listening when she’s telling me about issues at her work with “surfactants as they relate to the biochemical oxygen demand in the inorganics department”, you know what I mean? Neither do I.
I try to listen to my colleagues and friends, especially as they offer praise, considerations, or admonishment. But sometimes I only listen to 2 sentences of their speech. Do you know the 2 sentences I’m talking about? They are the opening and closing sentences that say something nice before addressing the main (and only) point which is a loving critique or challenge.
I try to listen to God. I’m not great at it. I hear God all the time- through the voices sung on Sunday morning, through my kids’ innocence and joy, through the wise written words of a colleague online, through the tearful stuttered speech of a teenager. But listening to God is much tougher. Sometimes it feels like God is telling me about heaven’s surfactants in the Inorganics Department. I nod obediently, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to take out of the scripture or wisdom that is convicting my heart in a way that I can’t apply directly to my life. Sometimes I feel like God has a whole speech for me, but I’m only listening to the opening and closing sentences…something like, “Will I love you, but (blah blah blah blah blah blah blah), and remember, I’ll always love you.”
For me, listening to God usually involves feeling. It’s noticing a passion in me, praying over it, feeling that passion grow, and then moving into action. OR, it might be a nagging conscience-laden feeling that I need to correct something in me and as I pray and listen to those whom I trust and love, that feeling moves me to change. Those are small examples, but my goal is to get so…practiced, so devoted, so open to listening to God that I can listen to the BIG stuff. I don’t expect God to “give me a sign” or “wake me from my sleep with a bullhorn” to guide my life-steps, but I do believe that the more we pray, the more we read, the more we have honest conversation with people whose hearts we trust, we will be able to really listen to God. If any of that rings true for you, maybe you can join me in this quest, because I wonder if the outcome of listening to God will be a clearer path, and more steady peace, and a more passion-fueled life.
Love your hearts,
Pastor Will

Dear Chili Cook-off Contestants, Many, many thanks and kudos for all your hard work and participation in many ways to make our event for Kindercottage such a success. With donations prior to Sunday, with your entry fees, and with the take at the door, we raised $1500+. We received another $20 yesterday so late donations may keep coming. The great news is that our Consistory voted to match our proceeds. How wonderful and exciting!! The winners of the cook-off were: Missy Loyet: for Best Overall Chili as voted by the Band Angela Smith: for Best Blend of Spices as voted by the Band Doug Smith: for People's Choice as voted by the crowd that came Amy Knackstedt: for Best Decor as voted by Brenda Crisp, Director Kindercottage All of you are winners. You have my sincere gratitude for the important part you played in making this cook-off a great event. Sure hope you had fun. Blessings to you in all you do, Kay
Our “All Board Retreat” is scheduled for Saturday, May 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This will be a wonderful
opportunity for board members to come together to more thoroughly discuss our vision of: “EvUCC Feeds the
Need.” We are a church that is truly beginning to feed the need in so many ways. It will be good for us to come
together to continue to find ways to develop that vision. Hope to see you there!
ALL BOARD RETREAT
The Justice League at EvUCC is doing a SECOND showing of the local documentary "The
Heroin Project". First shown at Highland Primary, this showing will be at the Lory Theater with a panel of profes-
sionals to field questions afterwards to equip you with signs to watch for, steps to take if you know someone who
would benefit from assistance, and more. Stay tuned for the specific date, but this is a legitimate epidemic in our
area and you'll be surprised how many household gateway drugs are leading to this very real and deadly problem.
THE JUSTICE LEAGUE
The Paper Slips Improv Theater BENEFITING Kindercottage Day Care is slotted for Saturday, April 1 at
St. Paul UCC in Belleville. Tickets are $40 and include dinner and the show. Doors open for a Silent Auction at 5pm. Dinner and Show at 6pm. Call 618-874-6505 for information.

Hope you can join us!
Another month is almost gone. This school year is going by so quickly. Our students have all grown so much physically and emotionally. Most of our 4’s have enrolled into kindergarten and are looking forward to their visitation day. Our 3’s are ready to move on too. This happens every year about this time……growing pains along with spring fever. We had our annual Meet & Greet Open House recently. Almost thirty families came to visit Peppermint. We certainly hope they all return with their completed registration forms. Please help us fill our classrooms for the 2017-18 school year. If you know anyone who has a preschool aged child, please send them our way. We love for people to visit. Just have them call 654-7600 for more information. We are very busy this month. The 3’s classes celebrated National Pig Day, Pancake Tuesday and Dr. Suess’s birthday. We have all had fun learning about St. Patrick’s Day and making green projects. The 4’s classes are working on the alphabet letters. They made lions and lambs for letter L. Each class talked about ever changing March weather and why we call days a lion or a lamb. Please don’t forget to come on over to MAZZIO’S on Monday, March 27 when Peppermint will host a fundrais-er. You can dine-in, carry-out, drive-thru or have home delivery. It will all help us from 5 pm to close. We appreciate your continued support.
Soon it will officially be Spring…….so enjoy the weather all the beautiful blooms that will adorn our earth. Miss Beckie and the Peppermint Staff
