We are glad that you have come to worship with us. Slide 2 James 4:7-10 (NKJV) Humility Cures Worldliness 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. 2 Slide 3 Passage notes 3 James is referring to people who have a backwards view of humor. Christians who make the temporary pleasure of sin the source of their happiness, and get depressed when they think of spiritual things. So God is essentially saying: "Look, you need to change your attitude, because sin isn't funny". Slide 4 Ironies in the Church Isn't It Funny? 4 Slide 5 When something bad happens, people say, How did God allow this to happen?", But when something good happens, they say, "Hey, look what I did! Do Not Be Deceived 7 Slide 8 Some Christians sing "Standing on the Promises", but all they really do is sit on the premises. Evangelism 14 Slide 15 Matthew 15 1 Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, 2 Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 8 These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. 12 Then His disciples came and said to Him, Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying? 14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch. The greatest thing we can do is expose someone to the truth. 2 Tim 3:16-17 The greatest thing we can do is expose someone to the truth. 2 Tim 3:16-17 15 Slide 16 The sins of others seem so terrible, but our sins are not that bad. The sins of others seem so terrible, but our sins are not that bad. Isn't It Funny How? 16 Slide 17 We demand justice for others, but expect mercy from God. We think their sin is worse Point Of View 2 Corinthians 10:12 - Oh, dont worry; we wouldnt dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant! 17 Slide 18 Matthew 7:3-5 (NKJV) 3 And why do you look at the speck in your brothers eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, Let me remove the speck from your eye; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brothers eye. 18 Examine Yourself First Slide 19 We get to go do what we want to do but we have to go to church We get to go do what we want to do but we have to go to church Isn't It Funny How? 19 Slide 20 Do we have to? If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. 43 He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, I am the Son of God. 44 Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing. 23 Slide 24
