Attendance: The student teacher is expected to be at the school on time every day and expected to have the same schedule as you. They are not to leave at the end of the official day. Absences may extend the period they are in the schools. They MUST call you first then the University supervisor and then alert my office. They follow your calendar and report to the school on workdays even if you are not there.

Substituting policy: They cannot substitute for anyone in

the school. They can only substitute (without pay) for you if the cooperating teacher, University supervisor and Principal agree.

School events: We encourage and expect our student teachers to attend faculty meetings, school events, PLC’s, committee meetings, parent conferences and carry out your duties where your principal deems it appropriate

Page 11: We appreciate your willingness to assist our student ... · We appreciate your willingness to assist our student interns during this semester to become extraordinary teachers for

Student interns must develop full lesson plans. Please let the supervisor and intern know if there is a specific lesson plan format for them to use. HPU provides samples. A supervisor may ask that there be more detail in a plan and recommend one.

Student teaching can be extended if absences go beyond a week or if the student is not at “met” on all criteria.

We encourage them not to have a job especially during the week.

Students are encouraged to come on workdays even if you are not there. This would give them time to explore the library, prepare materials and work on lesson plans.

Code of Ethics for North Carolina Educators and the School of Education Code of Ethical and

Professional Behaviors

We have discussed with our student teachers about

the use of Facebook and communications by email

and texting! They are not to text or use Facebook or

any other social media to communicate with students

and parents. They are not to post pictures. We will

ask them to video a lesson but the videos are for

intstructors and will be private. Emails need to be

approved by you if needed. They are not to use their

cell phones while on duty in the classroom.

Students need to know the testing protocols. For

example if you have them proctor tests then give them

strategies that will prevent them from giving your

students assistance.

Cooperating teachers are asked to complete one Formal Observation form and P-12 checklist prior to midterm (not the same lesson the supervisor evaluates) and give feedback to the student. This should also occur once after midterm.

Use the McRel Narrative form during the observation and followed by the formal observation form and P-12 checklist

Help the student teacher to accept the praise and constructive criticism with equal appreciation.

Beginning last year, we have asked student teachers and University supervisors to

evaluation the cooperating teacher. This year we asked the principals to complete

the same survey.

The clinical experience and the cooperating teacher’s role has become a national

priority for teacher preparation. Our accrediting agencies are looking more closely

at this piece of preparation.

Student Teacher Report

CAEP Project

The 7 C’s: Care: Challenge: Control: Clarify: Captivate: Confer: and Consolidate

It is a paper survey. We need to know your commitment and class size today. If middle grades or high school select a class to give the survey to that the student teacher will be teaching.

The window is March 14 to April 22.

A sign up sheet is circulating. We have to send information to Tripod by January 22.

You will receive a letter and packet from the

Dean that will include the following:

1. Letter to you

2. Letter for your school principal

3. A sample survey

4. A parent permission form

When the we receive the surveys, our administrative

staff will deliver them to you. The window for the study

is March 14- April 29 but we will let you know the week.

You give the survey with our intern being absent from

the room.

The survey does not identify the school, teacher or

principal and is not reported to anyone but HPU.

Professional Growth/Development Plan

You have a copy. The student teacher is expected

to be working on the plan and their progress is

evaluated at midterm. Copy is in back of your

folder.

Midterm Evaluation Form

There is an Intervention section at the end of

the midterm evaluation. If the score is 52 or

below, you as cooperating teacher along with the

student intern and University supervisor will

develop an intervention plan.

•This graph shows how with practice, a student teacher

should progress in planning, delivering and assessing

instruction of the students.

The McRel Narrative Feedback form is provided as an

appropriate form for you as cooperating teacher to use It is

not required for you to use it but may give the student

structured feedback.

The focus today is on student learning and it is also a focus for pre-service teachers. The Internship Formal Observation form you and the supervisor uses includes a checklist of observations of the students our intern is teaching.

The Electronic Evidence #5 Assessing Student Learning Project includes our student teachers ability to demonstrate how formative and summative assessment data informs them as a teacher of instruction and monitoring and evaluating their students’ progress. A link to a syllabus for our data course will be on the cooperating teacher website in case you would want to see the expectations.

LEA/IHE Certification of Teaching Capacity This is the final evaluation for student teaching.

It is the same form as the midterm but without the points. The intern must be MET on every item in order to receive a P(ass) as well as the license [and degree].

As with the midterm evaluation, the student intern will be involved in the process. The cooperating teacher, University supervisor and the intern will come to consensus when appropriate on the ratings.

The Principal signs the form as a representative of the school system.

If the student intern is not at the level of MET, the intern will have to extend student teaching which may go beyond the graduation date.

Page 24: We appreciate your willingness to assist our student ... · We appreciate your willingness to assist our student interns during this semester to become extraordinary teachers for

Please familiarize your student intern with the safety rules and procedures for your classroom and school.

With the events in the last several years and especially in Connecticut, your intern may be a little concerned about what they should be doing.

Also acquaint them with the expectations of teachers at your school including dress, start time for teachers, lunches, parking, etc.

Tell them where to find the announcements regarding bad weather for your system.

Page 25: We appreciate your willingness to assist our student ... · We appreciate your willingness to assist our student interns during this semester to become extraordinary teachers for

We look forward to our partnership with you

this semester.

During the week of May 2 we will have our

Student Teacher and Senior Awards Reception

with a light buffet from 5-7pm. This is a time

to recognize our students and to honor your

participation in their success. We will inform

you of the date as soon as the graduation

event calendar is set.
