We all know that butterflies symbolize change, with their stunning metamorphosis from one creature to a completely different creature. They start off as leaf-munching caterpillars without much in common with grace or beauty, and then they transform into gorgeous gossamer-winged beings.
Did you know that to do that, they must first turn into a gooey mess? It’s true — what happens in the cocoon is that the caterpillar’s tissues break down into a puddle and then all of those cells reconfigure themselves into wings, antennae, and beauty.
Britt Andreatta, http://www.soulschoolonline.com/2012/05/do-butterflies-need-stress-management/
….And that is why the butterfly symbolizes change — that in order to truly change, we must experience a little loss of the old and familiar in order to create the new. But change is not easy. Think about the caterpillar’s process:s/he prepares by ‘bulking up’ for the transition s/he finds the perfect place to hang out while everything is going down s/he let’s the change happen s/he emerges slowly and gives him/herself time to adjust to his/her new self

Official Communications to StudentsElectronic Mail is an official and the primary means of communication with students. All official email to a student will be sent to a student’s current University email address ([email protected]). If the student wishes to forward messages to other addresses it is their responsibility to ensure the alternative address is in place and operating correctly. Failure to read an email does not free students from their responsibilities to understand and comply with the University’s requirements.http://www.calendar.auckland.ac.nz/about/introduction.html The University of Auckland Calendar
The culmination of your programme
This practicum develops the Learning Outcomes to a much more complex level than EDPRAC 201
This is a Stage 3 course in your degree - it WILL be completely different to your other practicum experiences
Placements arrangements are complex at this time of the year. Expect that you may not be notified until after school has closed. You will be sent a notification as soon as possible. There is a leaflet Brief for Part A. This will be posted to you. There is no visiting lecturer in place during Part A.No grade goes on your transcript in semester 1 if you are doing Part B in semester 2. Grades for Part A/B courses go in at the end of both parts.
Important information:Each student completes a form indicating the schools that s/he would like to be considered. This is NOT a school selection process. Expect, and plan, to travel.
Vulnerable Children’s Act 2014
This Act recent came into force. There is a new process for you this year so that you can be classified as ‘core workers’ during practicum. There will be a second form to complete when you complete your school request form.
… and, each SECOND year 2015 student needs to complete a Police Vetting Service Form.
The Police Vetting Form must be completed and returned in person to: Judy RobinsonOffice H211xDuring the following hours;
23 September 9.30am – 11.00am3-5pm 24 September2-4pm 25 September2-4pm
28 September9.30 – 12.302-4pm 30 September 9.30 – 12.302-4pm 1 October9.30 – 12.302-4pm
YOU MUST BRING TWO FORMS OF PHOTO ID AS INDICATED ON THE FORM
You must also send your 2016 Ko wai au to your visiting lecturer in good time before they begin their work with you.
Making contact:Once you know which school you are going to:-look for the school’s website, find out about it ….including the school start date. -send an email to the school co-ordinator introducing yourself and asking for your associate teacher’s contact details (email will be on your placement advice).-wait patiently (some associate teachers will want to contact you over the summer break and others will not). -when you have your associate teacher’s contact details, send an email introducing yourself, asking questions you may have… and include your updated Ko wai au link.
You MUST review and revise your Ko wai au before the end of November so that it describes you as a student teacher NOW. You SHOULD seek feedback on your Ko wai au from your friends and peers … Is this how you want to present yourself as an EDPRAC 305 student (almost beginning) teacher?
Starting the year:Some schools do… some schools don’t
-Have a Teacher Only Day … or Days-Invite student teachers to their Teacher Only Day/s-Make contact over the school holidays-Encourage contact from their student teachers between Part A and Part B
Part A:- has a Brief and is introduced by video http://www.education.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/schools-departments/ldpp/practicum/practicum-primary/primary-resources.html
- has no visiting lecturer assigned (contact Karen Major if
needed)- has a compulsory on-campus day scheduled- is about you moving from student teacher to junior
colleague. Your associate teacher will expect initiative and independence
- requires consideration of your associate teacher’s needs and responsibilities at the beginning of the year
- is essential for strong practice in Part B- disappears quickly, so it should not be your only Part B
preparation. STAY in CONTACT
Is, in many ways, the culmination of your programme
enables you to become a teacher
has two distinct and connected parts

EDPRAC 305:
When YOU enrol in EPDRAC 305 YOU
must ensure that:-you have the pre-requisites for practicum
BEFORE you begin- you will have no conflicting commitments
Put the dates in your diary now!Over-estimate the time-frames in all cases. Do NOT schedule important events in between, directly after EDPRAC 305 or at the end of the semester.

What is the relationship between the Learning Outcomes and the New Zealand Teachers Council’s Graduating Teacher Standards?
Each course in the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Primary programme has specific learning outcomes which must be achieved for a student teacher to gain the qualification. It is an Education Council requirement that graduates of all initial teacher education providers demonstrate achievement of the Graduating Teacher Standards.
Your e-portfolio is a PROGRAMME requirement.
For EDPRAC 305…. Three artefact clusters are discussed during the Professional Conversation.By the end of your final year each theme pages must have a minimum of three artefact clusters = 9 clusters of artefacts.
Your e-portfolio must include ideas, thoughts, examples, references etc from ALL course work. There are links to e-portfolio identified in each course.
The Learning Outcomes, the Education Council’s Graduating Teacher Standards and the Practising
Teacher Criteria?
• You will lead discussion during your EDPRAC 305 Professional Conversation related to the Learning Outcomes and the Graduating Teacher Standards
• You will attend a compulsory Programme meeting near the end of your final semester to consider and discuss how your understanding of how you meet the Graduating Teacher Standards enables you to meet the Practising Teacher Criteria.
Let your family and friends know about your practicum commitments NOW
Leave is very rarely approved during EDRAC 305 Your VL doesn’t approve it Your AT doesn’t approve it You don’t approve it
… all leave during practicum must be approved by Karen Major.Application for leave forms are: Available in Forms on Moodle (at the moment)
They are also available from the Practicum Office and the website
SchoolsSchools, , SchoolsSchools
and and SchoolsSchools
Each offers YOU a unique opportunity to learn about YOURSELF as a teacher
Camp, other EOTC experiences and school events
Attending class camp, other EOTC experiences and school events can greatly enrich a student teacher’s learning about becoming a teacher. These are also ideal opportunities for a student teacher to give something back to the school. Student teachers are counted as adult helpers and not as teaching staff.
When camp/an event occurs during university semester time a student teacher’s non-attendance at other course lectures/sessions or to their course commitments/deadlines because of practicum-related activities is not sanctioned.
When camp/events occur during practicum they usually add to the student teacher’s opportunity to achieve success against the learning outcomes. Negotiation in relation to this opportunity (for example, meeting full-class responsibility requirements) is sometimes necessary. You are not required to attend.
Four Key Focuses in Part A
Focus 1: Understanding the complexity of the teacher’s role and the educational context
Focus 2: Forming professional relationships
Focus 3: Focusing on purposeful teaching and learning
Focus 4: Being professional

EDPRAC 305 2016 dates - ALL
Part A – 15 days from the first day that children attend at your practicum school As schools start on different dates, there are many different practicum schedules for student teachers at the beginning of the year. The Ministry of Education requires that schools begins "Between Monday 1 February (at the earliest); and Friday 5 February (at the latest)".
Also factor in Teacher Only Day/s before the school year begins & time in January to become a junior colleague in the school.
