This November is proving to be an exciting (and busy) time in the life of our church. On November 10th we will celebrate our 150th year as a congregation. Its hard to fathom that our church was organized only 4 years after the Civil War and Lees surrender at Appomattox, but that just goes to show the stretch of history this congregation has covered. As I write this, our church is also full of BOO-HA-HA trick or treaters as Hopkins Hall became a rain loca- tion for the Citys big Halloween event. It is good to share life with our community and, as we contemplate our 150 year presence in Rock Hill, it is a reminder that we have been a steady beat in the heart of our town since its for- mation. The other event of some excitement is related to stewardship. I know, I know whats exciting about Steward- ship? But, this year, as we celebrate the paying off of the mortgage, we are preparing to use those former funds to hire a new position. In September the Session approved a recommendation to hire a full time Director of Family Ministries, and the personnel committee is moving forward with the search process as we speak. This new position will be focused on directing education, worship, fellowship, and mission opportunities for our children, youth, and their parents. Our plan is to have this position filled in the first half of 2020. We would ask that you keep us in your prayers as our search process unfolds. Lastly, I want to make you aware of a Community Thanksgiving service that will be held at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church on Sunday, November 24th at 6:00 p.m. It will be an opportunity to worship together with 8 different local congregations including Oakland Baptist, West End Baptist, the Vineyard Church, Freedom Temple, Episcopal Church of Our Savior, St Johns Methodist, and Oakland Avenue. I hope you will come. As we move into this season of Thanksgiving, we have so much to be grateful for both within our church and within our community. I pray Gods blessings will be with you and your family, as well. Peace, Richard

As a diverse family of believers in Jesus Christ, our mission is to glorify God

by celebrating and sharing God’s renewing and transforming love as:

We worship the living God with joy and thanksgiving.

We teach the Word of God to deepen our faith and to grow in

our love for Jesus Christ.

We serve others through sharing the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

We fellowship to enrich and energize our life together as a congregation.

We nurture and embrace all God’s children.

This November is proving to be an exciting (and busy) time in the life of our church. On November 10th we will celebrate our 150th year as a congregation. Its hard to fathom that our church was organized only 4 years after the Civil War and Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, but that just goes to show the stretch of history this congregation has covered. As I write this, our church is also full of BOO-HA-HA trick or treaters as Hopkins Hall became a rain loca-tion for the City’s big Halloween event. It is good to share life with our community and, as we contemplate our 150 year presence in Rock Hill, it is a reminder that we have been a steady beat in the heart of our town since its for-mation. The other event of some excitement is related to stewardship. I know, I know what’s exciting about Steward-ship? But, this year, as we celebrate the paying off of the mortgage, we are preparing to use those former funds to hire a new position. In September the Session approved a recommendation to hire a full time Director of Family Ministries, and the personnel committee is moving forward with the search process as we speak. On behalf of the family of Pete Wheeles, we want to thank you for the prayers, cards, and phone calls extended to him and our family during his recent hospitalization and death. The luncheon for the family after his service was wonderful and enjoyed by all. Words cannot express how thankful and blessed we are to be a member of such a warm, loving and compassionate church family.

Peace and love,

Jean Horton and

Teresa Bradley

The Christmasville Pancake Breakfast will be held on Saturday, December 7th from 8:00 am—

10:30 am. The Youth and the men of the church will be working together to put on this wonderful event. Tickets are $6 adults, $4 ages 4—12, ages 3 and under are FREE. Tickets can be purchased in the church office starting November 13th or can be purchased at the door the day of the breakfast. your favorite recipes to complement the turkey/ham and dressing

provided by the Fellowship Committee. We hope you will join us for

this long standing tradition of our church family.

Advent Workshop

Please join us on Sunday morning, November 17 at 9:00 am in Hopkins Hall,

beginning with a continental breakfast, followed by Advent crafts. Chil-

dren’s Sunday School classes will not meet, but adults’ will meet as usu-

al. We hope that this will be a meaningful time for the children as we begin

the Advent season. If you are able to help with the children’s crafts, please

contact Susannah Hayes ([email protected] or 215-219-2819).

There will be a brief practice at 10:00 am in the sanctuary before the

worship service on November 10th. We need everyone who has a tar-

tan to participate, if possible. If you are unable to carry your Tartan,

please ask someone to help with it and let Bev Keely know who it will

be. This will be a very meaningful service with the addition of our celebration of the Sesqui-

centennial and having our Korean visitors from the Jesus Hospital in attendance.

Sunday, November 3rd: Join in for the 42nd Annual York

County CROP Hunger Walk! This intergenerational event

and then walk on behalf of the hungry! Our Mission & Outreach Committee supports the

Tuesday Morning Bible Study

This year our Tuesday Morning Bible Study will continue our exploration of New Testament Story by David L. Barr. This fascinating book covers the major themes, the historical background, and the cultural influences present during the writing of the New Testament. While this study serves more as an overview of each book, rather than a verse by verse study, it definitely uncovers the world behind the text, and offers a deeper insight into what was originally written. The Bible Study meets on Tuesday morning at 9:15 am.

Prayer and Visitation Ministries have been combined to better meet the needs of our congregation. Members will work with the pastor to show the love of Christ through visits and prayers with congregation members in times of need and help identify other needs that may be referred to ministries in the church.

If you would like to refer someone to the Visitation Ministry for possible visits or ask for prayer requests from the Prayer Ministry, please contact Jane Williams ([email protected] or 803-242-5431) or Rev. Carr ( 803-818-1863 or [email protected]). The

We Worship the Living God with Joy and Thanksgiving

Our Chancel Choir is Having a “HOMECOMING”! As part of our November 10th Sesquicentennial Worship Service, we are inviting EVERYONE who has ever sung in the Chancel Choir to join us for this special service! We are asking that you attend just the two prior rehearsals on Wednesdays, November 6 and October 30. We will rehearse the anthems for that Sunday at the beginning of each rehearsal (7:00 p.m.). You may then leave as we continue to rehearse the anthems for the Advent and Christmas season. The planned anthems for that Sunday will be easy to read and sing.

Calling all singers!! Come join us for this exciting event!

Sesquicentennial Celebration

On November 10, our church will celebrate our 150th year in many

special ways. Following worship service, we will enjoy a covered

dish lunch with our fellow congregation members, former ministers,

guests from Korea, along with other guests who join us for the spe-

cial occasion in the life of our church. Since we will have many

guests that day (and some who will be unable to bring dishes), please be very generous

with your main dishes, sides, salads, and desserts. It is sure to be an enjoyable and

very memorable day.

Celebrating our 150th Year: On Novbemver 10th, we are planting

a Gingko tree as part of our Sesquicentennial celebration. All chil-

dren are invited to bring a penny minted in the year they were born to

toss in the hole before the tree is planted. If you can't locate a penny

in that year any date is fine! The Gingko is a long lived tree and our

children will grow along with it having a memory of the day it was

planted and their part in it.

Men’s Fellowship Bible Study will meet at the church on Thurs-

day, November 21st at 6:30 pm. We will go to dinner afterward.

Questions or information, contact Chip Hutchison

([email protected])

Women’s Crossroads Bible Study will meet on Thursday, November

7th at 6:30 in the chapel. This year we are studying the twelve disciples.

All ladies are invited to join us. Questions or information, contact Susan

Chrismon tree on Sunday, Nov. 24th after worship. We would love to have

you join us. All ages are invited!

The Retirees of First Presbyterian Church group will

meet November 14 at the Rock Hill Little Café at noon. Our speaker, Lisa

Rumford, will tell us about the Life Long Learning Project that the City of

Rock Hill and Winthrop University will be launch-

ing this January. Let’s hope we have water this

month!

The annual Christmas Cookie Walk at FPC will be held on Friday, December 6th from 4—7 pm. For on-ly $6 you can fill a box with delicious homemade good-ies! The help of all mem-bers is needed to bake, serve, set up and clean up for this event. This year, we are only asking that each member make 10 doz-en small, homemade cook-ies. We will host two “Cookie Baking” nights in the church kitchen on No-vember 14 and November 21 from 6 to 8 pm. Plan to come and get your baking done early! Invite your friends and neighbors for this delicious Christmas tradition!

Yarns of Love - As you are aware, ladies meet each Thursday in the church’s parlor to make shawls and lapghans for Hospice and Community Care patients, as well as any of our church members who are seriously ill. Now the ladies are already busy making hats and scarves for the Mission and Outreach Committee’s Christmas tree gifts for those who are less fortunate right in our

own area. We are happy to be able to contribute to other missions in our church. If you are interested in joining this group, please come any Thursday afternoon at 3:00 to the parlor. You will be welcome!

Help for HOPE: During November, please consider bringing one or more boxes of macaroni and cheese to benefit the clients of Project HOPE. It doesn’t have to be name brand; store brand is fine. Large boxes, small boxes or individual servings are all needed. Bring in your contribution and leave it in the narthex by November 17. All food collected will be taken to the HOPE House the next week. Your contributions are appreciated by the Mission Committee and more importantly, the recipients who need it most. So please bring in your boxes of macaroni and cheese on or before November 17!

The Congregational Care Committee is in need of volunteers. Our committee is made up of teams that provide meals to church members in times of sorrow and joy and also provides food items for memorial receptions.

Team leaders contact members of their team to prepare an item to contribute when there is a need, then the leader delivers the meal to the family. Contact Joan Musselwhite for more information. (803-324-0704 or [email protected]).

We would love to have you join us!

Care Bags: FPC is participating in an on-going local mission project that

allows us to share compassion and kindness with those who have loved ones in

palliative care at PMC. You may leave items in the box in the narthex.

Small water bottles, peanut-free prepackaged snacks, small notebooks, pens or pencils, small tissue packs, lip balm, mints/gum. Items to pass the time: Crossword puzzles, word searches, small puzzles, etc.
