History
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a non-governmental organization that works in morethan 50 different countries.
It was founded in 1895-1896, in the U.S.A., with
the original name of New York ZoologicalSociety.
It emerged with a clear objective: to savewildlife and wild places across the globe.
Successfully helped to re-institute the Americanbison in the Western Plains.

Nowadays
They protect iconic creatures and environmentsaround the world, including Gorillas in Congo,Tigers in India, Wolverines in the YellowstoneRockies, etc.
Five parks in NYC: the Bronx Zoo, New YorkAquarium, Central Park Zoo, Prospect ParkZoo and Queens Zoo.
500 conservation projects.
Commitment to protect 25% of the worldbiodiversity, including the largest rainforest in theworld, the Amazon.

History in Brazil
George Schaller began to study jaguars in the
early 1970s in the amazon.
Brazilian primatologist Mrcio Ayres becamethe leader of WCS-Brazil in the 1980s.
Officially founded in 2003.
Huge mosaic of protected areas in the CentralAmazon recognized as a Biosphere Reserve.
Establishment of the first SustainableDevelopment Reserve in the Mamirau region,which has become a global conservationmodel.

Is it effective?
Currently focusing efforts in the conservation ofAmazon Waters.
Management and conservation of aquaticspecies.
WCS is effective because they have a lot ofexperience in dealing with diverse ecosystems inEarth, in this case the Amazon.
