P.1/3 Press Release - For Immediate Release (31 May 2011) The “fruity” and “move-more” way to reduce cancer risk and build a healthy workplace: WCRF HK calls for corporate support to its Fruity Friday and Move More Day during its Cancer Prevention Week (24-30 June) (Registration deadline: 17 June 2011) According to the World Health Organization, cancer is set to be responsible for almost 10 million deaths per year by 2015. In Hong Kong, it is estimated that the number of new cancer cases will increase by 25% to over 30,000 per year by 2020. The good news is, research funded by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) global network shows that up to a third of the most common cancers can be prevented through a healthy diet – including the consumption of fruits and vegetables, being physically active, and maintaining a healthy body weight . In particular, as confirmed by the latest report from the WCRF global network’s Continuous Update Project (CUP), there is “convincing” evidence that eating foods containing fibre (plant-based foods), being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight all help reduce the risk of bowel cancer, which is the second most common cancer in Hong Kong. There is also “probable” evidence that eating a wide range of fruit protects against cancers of the mouth, pharynx and larynx; oesophagus; lung; and stomach. To motivate Hong Kong’s working population to develop a healthy eating habit and move more in the workplace for the prevention of cancer, WCRF HK is calling upon all employers and employees to join its 7 th annual Fruity Friday on 24 June (Friday) and Move More Day on 30 June (Thursday). As part of WCRF HK’s Cancer Prevention Week (24-30 June) , these health-promoting and fundraising activities aim to help Hong Kong’s workforce maintain all-round good health and reduce their risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. On Fruity Friday, employers are encouraged to buy their employees a healthy meal or fruity snack whilst corporations participating in Move More Day will be provided with tips to encourage their staff to “move more” on the day to experience the many benefits of a more active lifestyle at work. All participants of Fruity Friday and Move More Day, with a minimum donation of only HK$30 per person, will receive an exclusive Cancer Risk Meter to learn more about how various lifestyle factors are linked to cancer risk; plus, participants will also get the chance to win a 12-month salad treat from Just Salad to keep you wholesome throughout the year! The first 1,000 individuals to sign up will also receive a free Loyalty Discount Card valued at HK$200 to enjoy a 10% discount on every purchase from Just Salad for a year. Meanwhile, the top three fundraising corporations will win wholesome salad treats from Just Salad for celebrating the team’s fundraising efforts. Other incentives include WCRF HK’s latest 5-A-Day Cookbook, complimentary health talks by WCRF HK’s registered dietitian, free Jazz/Latin/Hip-hop dance classes offered by Creation Dancing Academy, corporate web pages, multi-purpose bags, tee shirts, watch pedometers and much more… Heidi Lau, General Manager of WCRF HK, said: “Fruity Friday and Move More Day are designed to facilitate the busy corporations around Hong Kong to get a positive health message out to their staff in a fun, easy and meaningful way. Not only will participating individuals and companies receive scientific health
