1 Tuesday Our very own competition secretary Duncan Locke LRPS presents this week’s talk, Be There Early! Travels with a Camera. He says:- Being on location early with your camera to get a clear view was vital during the five weeks that I spent in China in 2017. There's no shortage of people in China with many keen photographers (and the rest of the population just has to have a selfie!). The first half of my talk will feature landscape and wildlife images from eight locations in China. After the break I will show cultural and landscape images from a country, which like China is home to an ancient civilisation, but unlike modern China is rarely visited by western tourists. Where is it? Come along for 7.30 pm and find out! LlechweddLlechwedd opened in 1846 and became one of the largestslate quarries in the world.

The Ffestiniog Railway, which already connected BlaenauFfestiniog to the coast at Porthmadog was instrumental inthe success of Llechwedd venture.   John WhiteheadGreaves, the owner of Llechwedd, was also chairman of theFfestiniog Railway and this long association becameanother factor in the success of the quarry.

After decades of expansion, the 1960s saw a steep declinein the demand for slate and eventually the quarry closed.

Today, the site has been developed as a visitor attractionwith visits to the deep mine workings and limited access tothe upper quarry areas.  Here also, for the adventurous andthrill-seekers, is 'Titan', Europe's longest zip-wire course.

My infrared images represent something of the desolate remains of buildings and the open-cast mining ravaged landscape.   Slatequarrying and working on a very limited scale is still carried out.

Tenerife

I'd like to introduce myself as a potential photography tutor/guide for your members who may travel to Tenerife on holiday.

You can see my work and read more about me at:Website:        Instagram:                Facebook.                  Altered landscapes gallery

When you go on holiday you want to get some great images to take home. With over thirty years professional experience I can help andguide you. Why not also take the time to improve your photographic skills? Whatever your skill level, novice to advanced I can help youto get some great images from your time on Tenerife.

Learn to control your camera more efficiently to make the most of the tools at your disposal and spend more time finding compositions, looking at texture, lighting, colours and lines that make great photos instead of struggling with settings.

If you're already competent with all the controls I can concentrate on getting you to the best locations, places the average tourist willnever see and you can discover some of the drama to be captured in the landscape on Tenerife. I'll be there to help with all technicalaspects as well as assist with compositions, using the light and weather conditions to make the most of some amazing scenery rangingfrom wild Atlantic seascapes to rugged volcanic landscapes.

Also possible is a trip to old towns and villages with fine examples of Colonial architecture and ramshackle rustic buildings, and in thecapital there are examples of some cutting edge modern architecture.

I can also provide tuition/guidance tailored to suit any particular requirements.

Tenerife has lots to offer whatever style or genre of photography you prefer and having lived here over twenty years I have an extensiveknowledge of the island.

CarterArt Challenge Day 24 MarchOur first Challenges Day on 20 January was a great success so we are planning a second - a day of photography challenges and surprises, aimed at developing your photography style and skills. We have access to two floors of a wing of Stokesay Court, that are not presentlyused, and the waterfalls and cascading pools in the gardens of the estate.

We are not giving too much away in advance but be assured that the challenges will stretch you to think about different approaches toyour photography. It will be fun and rewarding, sometimes eerie, other times a hoot.

The day is suitable for all from serious beginners to experienced photographers. All you need is a camera, a tripod if you have one (wehave spares), a choice of lenses, a sense of fun and to be prepared to try new things.
