Welding Basics
Welding is a fabrication process that joins metals. This is often done by melting the work pieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten metal (the weld pool) that cools to become a strong joint. The welding process often uses heat, sometimes used in conjunction with pressure, to produce the weld. Heat is produced by friction, electrical current, open flame, lasers or electron beam.
3
Typical Types of Welding
SMAW Shielded Metal arc welding “Stick”
GTAW Gas Tungsten arc welding “TIG”
SAW Submerged arc welding
GMAW Gas Metal arc welding “MIG/MAG”

Why Mechanized Welding?
Handheld MIG weld Mechanized MIG weld
7
Benefits of Mechanization 1. Increases production
Replaces operators hands Continuous welding without stopping
2. Improves weld quality Regulated precise speed and path control Maintains proper torch angle and standoff
4. Reduces material handling Portable machine which can be carried to the work piece Can work in all positions
5. Reduces distortion Regulated travel speed creates uniform heat input
3. Decreases consumables expense Eliminates over welding and wasted electrode
6. Improves worker’s environment Removes workers from smoke and heat Reduces repetitive stress
7. Requires less operator skill
8
Target Customers
1. Heavy Steel Construction
2. Shipyards/Barge Builders/Oil Rigs
3. Structural Steel Fabricators (Beam and Bridge)
4. Storage Tank Fabricators
5. Trailer Manufacturers
6. Railcar Manufacturers
