W.C. Petty Elementary School
March 10, 2017 Bobcat Pause
Dear Petty Families, The District 34 Educational Foundation presents the 7th Annual Duck Race on Saturday, May 6, 2017 in conjunction with Antioch Art Crawl. The race will be held at 2:00pm at the Hiram Buttrick Sawmill. Tickets are available NOW and will be sold at various District 34 events, your school office, or Antioch Parks office up un-til race time. The cost is $5 for one ticket (duck) and $20 for five tickets (ducks) with a top prize of $500! Winners do not need to be present to win. All proceeds go toward the District 34 Foun-dation to support mini-grants, and district-wide projects. For more information, contact [email protected] or check with your school office. The D34 Foundation has supported many of our teachers at Petty for years through the mini-grants they offer to teachers in D34. This year our special education team received a grant to provide our school with sensory tools to include in our new sensory room. Our sensory room will be used as a location for students to use when they need a calming break in order to regulate their behavior or at-tention. For years, we’ve had teachers receive grants for other innovative projects to use with our students. Please consider purchasing tickets for the Duck Race to support our students.
Respectfully, Joanna Gerritsen WC Petty Principal [email protected]

Fourth grade students are completing the individual projects for VanGogh, but will continue working on the mural for the art crawl.
Third grade students are finishing The Scream. They will begin working with movement and rythem inspired by artist Keith Haring.
Second grade students are creating chalk cityscapes.
With the successful completion of the 2nd grade music concert, the students will be exploring new mallet techniques
on the xylophones and learning to begin improvising through rhythmic activities and solfege singing. 3rd Grade
students have been review recorder fingerings and learning longer songs. They will have a voluntary performance on
Tuesday, March 14th between 6:30 and 7:00 pm in the WCP gym playing StarBag Café from their recorder
books. Dress is casual for the performance. Along with the 3rd graders, the Bobcat Singers will also perform two
pieces I’d Rather Be Happy and Bright Happy Day at this meeting of the Master Facility Committee during the
Touring section of the evening. All parents are welcome. In the classroom, the 4th graders are finishing up recorder
belt testing and will start working on a piece entitled Zudio in which they will learn about
new movement ideas, the organization of the music and work with sixteenth notes. 5th
grade will be creating recorder rounds using a piece entitled Jeremiah, Blow the Fire and
will expand them into two different parts played at the same time. They will also be

Positive Behavior Counts at W.C. Petty!
Our February P.B.I.S. Students-of-the-Month
Congratulations on being Responsible, Respectful and Safe
PBIS at Petty - What’s the PBIS School Store?
PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) is the framework that Petty uses to reinforce our school wide behavioral expectations: be responsible, be respectful, and be safe. To reinforce these ex-pectations, students work hard to earn Bobcat Bucks from staff and each month, they can use their bucks at the School Store (the last Friday of each month). Your child might purchase toys and/or privi-lege coupons at the store. We encourage families to celebrate their child’s success and rewards for con-sistently following our school expectations!
At the Petty Pow Wow (Petty Community Meeting), we will recognize a “student of the month” from each
class. Please encourage your child to work hard to show Petty Pride throughout the rest of the school year
and celebrate the rewards they earn!
