ABOUT THE CAVALIERSConcordia entered the season as the conference defending champion, but was picked fourth in the coaches’ preseason poll. CU has won three of its fi rst seven games. Megan Padilla leads the Lady Cavaliers averaging 12.71 points and 2.29 steals per game so far this season. Grace Cappelman leads Concordia in rebounds averaging 5.29. Courtney May is dishing out 3.14 assists per outing as well. May is adding 11.86 points per game. Th e Cavaliers are 11th in NAIA Div. 2 averaging 13.7 steals per game. Th at number leads the conference as well. Concordia is also averaging a CCC-high 20.7 fouls per game.

LAST TIME OUTAft er forcing 37 turnovers last Friday night, the No. 23 Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team forced 30 turnovers last Saturday, in a 71-47 win over Fresno Pacifi c. Brooke Randall led the Mountaineers with 18 points. Th e junior was 7 for 12 from the fi eld, in-cluding 2 of 5 from three-point range. Korrie Bourn added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Miller scored 11 points aft er making all of her 11 free-throw attempts. Tina Miller and Dominique Johnson each threw three assists. Eastern held the Sunbirds to 31 percent shooting from the fi eld, while it shot 34 percent. EOU made 6 of 16 from behind the arc, and Fresno Pacifi c made 2 for 16. Th e Mountaineers fi nished 21 for 24 from the free-throw line, compared to FPU’s 17 of 20 free-throw shooting. Fresno Pacifi c did outrebound EOU, 39-38. But, the Mountaineers had 28-16 points in the paint advantage. Eastern also outscored the Sunbirds, 25-9, in points off of turnovers. Th e game featured no lead changes and no ties. Th e Mountaineers had their largest lead in the fi rst half aft er a Bourn three-point play, 32-17, with 1:49 left in the period. EOU had a 33-21 halft ime lead. Eastern Oregon’s largest lead was 71-46 with 46 seconds left in regulation.

SEVENTEEN AGAINTh e Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team jumped from No. 23 to No. 17 in the fi rst poll of the regular season Monday. Th e Eastern women are riding a four-game win streak into Cascade Collegiate Conference play this weekend. EOU has its ranking since be-ing ranked No. 17 on Jan. 30, 2008, with a 17-2 record. Th e Mountaineers received 92 votes in the preseason poll and 165 votes in the current poll. Corban joins Eastern Oregon from the Cascade Conference. Th e Warriors moved from No. 16 to No. 12. Warner Pacifi c re-ceived 21 votes in the poll, and Southern Oregon had 10 votes. Indiana Wesleyan was voted as the unanimous No. 1 pick in the poll.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCKTh e Mountaineers are currently eighth in the country in turnover margin. Eastern Oregon has a 6.87 turnover margin. It is fi rst in the Cascade Conference. EOU is 23rd in the nation in assist to turnover margin. Eastern is averaging 14.2 assists per game which is fourth in the conference. Th e Mountaineers 16.2 turnovers per game is fi rst in the CCC. Eastern Oregon is forcing 23.12 turnovers by opponents per outing this year as well. Tina Miller leads EOU in assists per game averaging 2.38.

ABOUT THE KNIGHTSKelsey Mattsen leads Warner Pacifi c into the 2011-12 season. Th e senior received the second-most votes on the preseason All-Conference team. She is averaging 13 points and fi ve rebounds per game so far this season. Cameryn Calhoun was also named to the pre-season All-CCC team. Nichole Jackson is averaging 6.5 assists per game, which is third in the country. As a team, WPC is fi rst in the conference and fi ft h in NAIA Div. 2 in assists per game, averaging 18.3. Th e Knights’ 43 percent shooting from the fi eld is 10th in the nation. Th ey are also 14th in the country in assist to turnover ratio.

KNIGHTS PULL AWAY FROM EASTERN WOMENJAN. 28, 2011

PORTLAND, Ore. – Th e Warner Pacifi c College women’s basketball team rallied for a 87-74 win over Eastern Oregon University.

Th e Knights (12-9) (6-5) improved to 8-2 at home this season, and completed a regular season sweep over East-ern Oregon with the victory. WPC shot a phenomenal 58 percent from the fi eld, hitting 31 of its 53 shots. Th e Mountaineers had their best shooting output during conference play hitting 49 percent of their attempts from the fi eld.

Th e Mountaineers had an early 27-16 advantage with 7:31 to play in the fi rst half. WPC fought back and cut the Eastern lead to six, but Kelsea Hurliman drained a long three pointer at the halft ime buzzer that pushed the EOU lead back to nine and gave the Mounties momen-tum at the break, 40-31.

Warner Pacifi c regrouped over intermission and responded by hitting their fi rst seven shots to begin the second period. Th e Knights grabbed their fi rst lead of the game at the 15:03 mark on two Cameryn Calhoun free throws, then battled EOU through nine lead changes and fi ve ties over the next six minutes of play.

A steal and layup from Jessica Denmon gave WPC the lead for good with 9:06 left in regulation. Warner Pacifi c’s advantage reached as many as 18 points and steady free throw shooting sealed the victory.

Warner Pacifi c fi nished with fi ve double digit scorers led by Miranda Holenstein’s game-high 23 points. She converted on 9 of her 14 attempts from the fi eld. Kelsey Mattsen added 18 points, Katie Smith had 13 points and Layne Tucker chipped in 12 points. Calhoun fi nished with a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.

Th e Knights fi nished with 22 assists as a team, while Eastern had 17. WPC outrebounded the Mountaineers, 33-22. Warner Pacifi c fi nished with 17 turnovers and EOU committed 16. Eastern Oregon made eight of its 17 three-point attempts and the Knights hit three of eight. Warner Pacifi c hit 16 of 16 free throw attempts in the second half and 22 of 24 for the game.

Hurliman scored 21 points to lead EOU (13-8) (5-7), while Rosebud Guthrie and Vintea Georges added 15 and 14 points respectively.

EOU WOMEN’S SEASON ENDS IN SEMIFINALSFeb. 25, 2011

PORTLAND, Ore. – Th e Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team fell at Concordia University in the semifi nals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament, 70-65.

Th e top-seeded Cavaliers held off a rally by sixth-seeded EOU behind a 48-28 rebound advantage. Th e Moun-taineers (19-10) have their season ended in their 10th straight postseason.

Eastern fi nished with four players scoring in double fi gures led by Nicole Redd’s 19 points. Th e freshman fi n-ished 6 of 8 from the fi eld, including 5 of 7 from behind the perimeter. Shaylee Nielsen added 14 points, while Rosebud Guthrie had 11, and Kelsea Hurliman chipped in 10 points. Samantha Flett threw a team-high four assists, and Kyle Miller grabbed fi ve rebounds.

As a team, the Mountaineers fi nished with 28 total rebounds and Concordia had 23 off ensive rebounds. Second chance points for the Cavaliers plagued EOU, especially in the fi rst half where CU had an 18-8 advan-tage in second chance points and a 20-4 advantage in points in the paint.

Concordia jumped out to a 16-2 lead to begin the game behind a 12-0 run. Eastern closed the gap with a 14-4 run fueled by a Redd three-pointer. Rachel Scarpelli and CU answered with a three of their own to begin a 10-0 run to stretch the lead back to 14 points. Th e Mountain-eers then went on an 8-0 run to make the margin, 30-24, with 4:38 left in the fi rst half. Th e Cavaliers closed the string of runs and took a 9-0 run to their largest lead of the game at 15 points.

EOU trailed at the half, 44-33, and began the second half with a Hurliman three-pointer. Trailing 49-36, East-ern Oregon scored 10 of the next 12 points to shrink the lead to fi ve points, and the Mountaineers hung close the rest of the way.

Redd hit a three-pointer to make it a four-point game at 59-55 with 11:07 to play. Concordia scored fi ve-straight to stretch it back to nine points, but Hurliman’s layup pulled the Mountaineers within three at 66-63 with 3:13 remaining. Danielle Clauson hit a pair of free throws, but Miller’s jumper at the other end maintained the one-possession game going into the fi nal minute of play.

Nielsen missed a three-pointer with 39 seconds left that would have tied the game, and Courtney May hit a pair of clutch free throws with 23 seconds to play to reach the fi nal score of 70-65. Nielsen missed another three-pointer with 10 seconds to play, and the ball fell out of bounds to the Cavaliers to clinch the victory.

Clauson fi nished with a game-high 20 points and added seven rebounds and two blocks. May had 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Scarpelli totaled 17 points and Megan Padilla added 10 for Concordia.

Th e Mountaineers shot 39 percent from the fi eld, made 9 of 23 from behind the arc, and 8 of 14 from the free-throw line. Concordia fi nished shooting 45 percent from the fi eld, 5 for 15 from three-point range, and 9 of 13 from the free-throw line.

A THORNY ROSE CITYTh e Eastern Oregon women’s basketball team have had trouble in its recent trips to Portland. Th e Mountaineers won one of their three games there a season ago. EOU has lost two of its last three games at Warner Pacifi c.

EOU LANDS TRIO ON CCC LISTKorrie Bourn, Kyle Miller, and Brooke Randall were each tabbed preseason All-Conference per-formers by the CCC head coaches. EOU was one of two schools to land three players to the pre-season list. Miller, a senior, averaged 11.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season. Bourn and Randall were the only newcomers on the list aft er transferring to Eastern from Spokane Falls Community College. Corban University’s Katie Steigleman was voted the CCC’s Preseason Player of the Year.

EASTERN TABBED SECOND IN CCCTh e Eastern Oregon University women’s basket-ball team was selected second in the Cascade Collegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll. With fi rst-place votes from six coaches, Corban University is the preseason choice to win the conference title. Eastern Oregon and Warner Pacifi c split the remaining four fi rst-place votes, with the Mountaineers and Knights picking up two each. EOU and WPC each tallied 82 points to share second in the preseason ranking.
