2008-09 SEASON IN REVIEWEND OF THE ROADOregon ended the 2008-09 season on a six-game losing streak, dropping its fi nal fi ve games of the regular season and a fi rst-round game to Washington at the Pac-10 Tournament.

The Ducks ended the season with a 9-21 overall record and a 5-13 mark in the Pac-10. The numbers were not good as Oregon’s 21 losses set a new program high. The Ducks’ 10 home losses were also a new program record, while UO’s nine wins were its lowest total since the 1992-93 season.

A stagnant off ense saw Oregon set program lows in points scored (1,699), assists (312) and fi eld goal percentage (.384).

INJURY BUGThe Ducks were also dealt the unlucky hand of losing six diff erent players to injury throughout the season. Two of those student-athletes – Nia

Jackson and Rita Kollo – were expected starters and suff ered season-ending injuries prior to the start of the regular season. In total, six diff erent players missed a total of 84 games.

A NEW BEGINNINGFollowing the season a drastic change was made to move the team in a diff erent direction, bring exciting energy to the court and increase off ensive production.

Then UO Athletics Director Pat Kilkenny brought in Paul Westhead, best known for his run-and-gun style off ense, to lead the new era of Oregon women’s basketball.

Known for executing an exciting brand of basketball, Westhead recently coached the Phoenix Mercury to a WNBA championship in 2007. His latest hardware makes him the only head coach to win a championship in both the NBA and WNBA.

KIWI KOMMANDEROregon began its season short two guards - Nia Jackson and Taylor Lilley - due to injury, leaving Micaela Cocks as the most experienced veteran on the squad.

It didn’t phase Cocks, who took over starting point guard duties and proceeded to lead the Ducks in scoring throughout 2008-09. She fi nished the season averaging 13.5 points per game and was named to the Pac-10 Third Team, while also being voted by her teammates as the season’s MVP.

The Auckland, New Zealand, native led the Pac-10 averaging 2.3 three-pointers a game, and also fi nished in the conference top-10 of four additional categories; scoring (13.5 ppg; 9th), free-throw percentage (.860; 3rd); three-point fi eld goal percentage (.393; 4th) and minutes played (36.9 mpg; 2nd).

The 5-foot-8 sharp shooter did all that while never having an off season. Cocks left the UO following the 2007-08 season and returned to New Zealand to pre-pare for the 2008 Summer Olympics. After her Olympic experience, Cocks re-turned to Eugene for Oregon’s international tour of Italy followed by the new semester.

To put it in perspective, out of a possible 1,200 minutes during the 2008-09 sea-son, Cocks played 1,108.

She led the Ducks in scoring on 11 occasions and reached the 20-point plateau fi ve times.

A veteran basketball coach with a resume that spans nearly four decades, Westhead has coached in the NBA and WNBA, as well as the men’s collegiate ranks. This will be Westhead’s fi rst head coaching job with a NCAA women’s basketball program.

After hiring his staff which includes Dan Muscatell, Keila Whittington and Kai Felton, Westhead wasted little time putting the Ducks through excruciating up-tempo workouts to prepare his student-athletes for the new style of the 2009-10 season.

SCHEDULE DIFFICULTYOregon knew the 2008-09 season would offer difficult tests. The Ducks had chosen to prepare for the Pac-10 season with a schedule that included seven consecutive games against teams that had reached the postseason in 2008. The Ducks struggled during that stretch fi nishing with a 1-6 record and an overall mark of 4-7 in non-conference action.

STARTING FIVEWith several injuries taking a toll

on Oregon’s roster, the Ducks also had diffi culties fi nding a consistent lineup. The Ducks used 11 diff erent starting lineups during the season, with junior guard Micaela Cocks the only player to starts all 30 contests.

The group with the most success was the lineup of Cocks, Taylor Lilley, Jasmin Holliday, Amanda Johnson and Ellie Manou. That fivesome fi nished 4-6.

Of the 11 players available during the season, 10 started at least one game during the year.

KEYS TO THE GAMEOregon’s off ensive struggles showed in the team’s fi nal scores. When the Ducks scored below 50 points the team was a winless 0-10. When Oregon scored 60 points or more, the Ducks were 7-4. The Ducks also struggled with early defi cits, fi nishing the year 3-19 when entering the locker room trailing at the half. Oregon also had an absence of balanced scoring. The Ducks were 8-2 with three or more players in double fi gures, and just 1-19 when two players or less reached double digits.

SINGLE GAME & SINGLE SEASON TOP 10’sAMANDA JOHNSON • Eight steals at South Dakota State (11.23.08) tie for sixth in single-game history

MICAELA COCKS • Cocks’ 6-for-7 (.857) three-point performance vs. Portland (01.26.09) ties for third in

single-game three-point fi eld goal percentage. The mark also ties for seventh for

three-point fi eld goals made in a single game.

• Twice produced 5-for-6 performaces from three point range; vs. Georgia Tech

(12.13.08) and vs. # 7 Baylor (12.20.08). Those marks tie for fi fth in single-game

three-point fi eld goal percentage.

• Cocks’ 9-for-9 eff ort from the free-throw line vs. UCLA (03.05.09) ties for ninth in

single-game free throw percentage.

• Knocked down 68 three-pointers during the season, ranking fi fth in single-season

history.

• Led Oregon with an .860 (74-of-86) free-throw percentage. The percentage ranks

fourth in single-season history.

CALIFORNIA KIDSOregon forwards Amanda Johnson and Jasmin Holliday worked their way into the starting lineup as true freshmen. Already a young team entering the season with nine underclassmen on the roster, Johnson and Holliday were called upon early, and at the end of the year were named Pac-10 All-Freshman Honorable Mention.

Johnson led the Ducks in rebounding (5.4 rpg) and steals (1.4 spg), becoming the third freshman

ever and the fi rst since Bev Smith (1978-79) to lead UO in both categories. She averaged 7.9 points per game, and led the Ducks in rebounding a team-best 11 times. Holliday was voted the team’s Most Improved Player after averaging 5.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while also totaling 36 steals (second on team).

DOWNTOWN CONNECTION The junior backcourt duo of Micaela Cocks and Taylor Lilley continues to climb the three-point

charts for Oregon. Taylor Lilley’s career total of 146 treys ranks fourth all-time. She needs 37 to catch Jaime Craighead (182, 1998-02) and 44 to surpass record holder Missy Croshaw (189, 1990-94). Cocks knocked down 68 during this 2008-09 season, a mark that ranks fi fth in single-season history. The 5-foot-8 guard failed to knock down a shot from long distance in only two game last season, and ended the year with a streak of 16 consecutive games with a three-pointer.

CAREER RECORD WATCH> Taylor Lilley’s 146 career three-pointers rank fourth all-time in Oregon his-

tory. In order to become the all-time UO leader, Lilley would need to knock

down 44 for the record – surpassing Missy Croshaw (1990-94, 189). Lilley also

has the chance to crack the top-10 for double fi gure scoring games. Currently

with 41 career games of double-digit scoring, Lilley would need double fi gures

in 25 games during the 2009-10 season to make the career top-10. During her

sophomore season (2007-08), Lilley fi nished the year with 20 double-fi gure

contests.

< Micaela Cocks has the opportunity to claim two all-time re-

cords. Her current .855 (124-of-145) career free-throw percent-

age would set a new program record. In addition, if Cocks sinks

at least 70 three-pointers during her senior season, she could

potentially become the program’s all-time leader. She drilled

68 as a junior. Cocks’ current career .382 three-point fi eld

goal percentage currently ties for seventh all-time. The New

Zealand native, who has played in 91 games, could also

crack the career games played top 10 if she were to ap-

pear in at least 26 games this season.

OPPONENT GAME-BY-GAME STATISTICS

< Ellyce Ironmonger came off the bench in 27

contests a year ago. Her top performance came in a

game against Montana on Dec. 4, 2008 at Mac Court.

The Aussie set season highs with six points and a

game-high 10 rebounds. It was the third time in

her career that Ironmonger reached double fi gures

on the boards. The Ducks fell, 60-52, to the Grizzlies,

but will have the chance for revenge this season. Or-

egon will head to Missoula on Nov. 22, 2009 for the

rematch at Dahlberg Arena.
