Big Beaver Troy, MI 48084 October 30 $25 p/p 3 SCECH Pakistan, India and Afghanistan have been referred to as the Deadly Triangle. India and Pakistan have been fighting for over 60 years. Both countries are nuclear states, adding a further dimension to already complex relations and antagonism. Beyond Al‐qaeda and the Taliban, Afghanistan is seen as the latest arena of conflict between India and Pakistan to assert a regional sphere of influence, bringing either greater stability or greater turmoil to the area. November 20 $25 p/p 3 SCECH Israel and Palestine have engaged in violent clashes as well as numerous peace plans and negotiations for nearly 50 years. While both sides pledge their desire for a peaceful settlement to the conflict, even an agreement to meet for dialogue is often elusive. Demographic, political and ideological realities on both sides would appear urgent enough to bring adversaries together, yet in fact, the impasse continues. Third party involvement, whether by the US itself or through the so‐called Quartet (US, UN, EU, Russia) is seen as a possible catalyst for talks by some and an impediment by others. December 4 $25 p/p 3 SCECH The 1979 Islamic Iranian Revolution drastically altered the relationship between Iran and western countries. Recent efforts to restart diplomatic interaction between the US and Iran signal a paradigm shift from the rhetoric of conflict and confrontation that has dominated the past 34 years. A major regional player, a key oil producer and a country with an emerging nuclear program that has ambiguity as to its civilian or military objective, Iran remains a critical, yet controversial country to understand within the field of international relations and geopolitics today. Learn unique approaches to teaching about Current Events, International Conflict Resolution, History and the various geographical regions. This seminar will allow you to strengthen your understanding of world regions, their histories and cultures.
