Fall and winter are just around the corner. Cold temperatures and weather changes can greatly impact your
home, and as a homeowner, you need to be prepared. Here are a few components of your home to think
about when preparing for the shift in seasons:
Landscaping. Trim tree limbs that are
close to your roof or any
power lines. Snow and
ice storms can wreak
havoc and cause debris
to damage your home.
Also, grass roots are
growing deep into the
ground to prepare for
winter, so consider ferti-
lizing or reseeding your
lawn before it gets cold.
Windows and doors. Swap all of your
door and window screens
that you use in the warm-
er months for more pro-
tective storm windows.
Installing weather strip-
ping or caulking around
your doorframes and
windows is also a good
idea to help lower heat-
ing bills.
Chimneys and fireplaces. If you regu-
larly use a fireplace in
the colder months, call a
professional to clean and
inspect your chimney to
ensure there are no
blockages. Make sure to
test the flue in your fire-
place as well, as a tight
seal is best to prevent
moisture and debris from
entering your home.
Gutters and downspouts. Home-
owners need to consist-
ently keep their gutters
clean to prevent buildup
of leaves and other de-
bris. Make sure water
doesn’t pool at the bot-
tom of the spout. Stand-
ing water can damage
your driveway, side-
walk or even the
home’s foundation.

Greet guests with this charming alternative to a
fall wreath. Simply apply a layer of chalkboard paint to the inside of an old tray, then
add autumn leaves, pinecones, or berries for a seasonal finish. (Swap in evergreen and holly
for the holidays!)

TIPS FOR YOUR
PETS THIS FALL
1) Your pet may have become used to having you around
more while school was on break and summer vacations were happening. If your routine means leaving your pet home alone more often, remember to ease them back into a routine of stimulating activities they can do on their own.
2) The days are slowly getting shorter, so if you are out with your dog at night, or have an outdoor cat, find them a reflective collar to wear to ensure they are visible in the dark. And remember to make your-self visible when out at night as well.
3) As colder weather approaches, rodents seek shelter from the temperatures, which means more rodenticides are used. This is highly toxic to pets and could be fatal if ingested. Use extreme caution when using these products around your home and make sure they are not in reach of your pets.
4) Believe it or not, ticks are still lurking. Piles of leaves and other piles of garden scraps are places ticks like to hang out to survive during the winter. In order to help protect your pet, get rid of excess gar-den waste where ticks can live, and continue to ap-ply a flea/tick preventative to your pet year-round.
