Trustees established an STI license agreement that tank fabricators had to comply with

It allowed use of the STI name and the sti-P3 trademark on UST’s

It also allowed STI inspection of the fabricators’ sti-P3 tanks

After STI terminated use of UL to perform inspections of sti-P3 tanks in early 1980’s, STI performed its own inspections of sti-P3 tank fabricators

In 1980’s, STI contracted individuals from the oil industry and fire safety community…….

John Ainlay, API & NE Fire Marshal

Dutch Otto, Amoco

Bill Jackson, Phillips Petroleum

Larry Stevenson

In 1984, legislation passed requiring corrosion protected tanks in 1988

In 1988, EPA promulgated new UST rules Number of licenses for sti-P3 tanks grew New coatings became popular New QC Program on Zinc Weld-On Anodes Quality Control Meeting initiated in 1978 was

turned into an annual requirement

Board of Directors established a comprehensive audit

Director’s companies were initial recipients

Roger Richer of BMT, and an STI Director, agreed to audit fabricators with STI staff

In 1989, Dick Izmer was hired as 1st full time employee to manage the quality control program.

Larry O’Shea was hired in 1992. Larry is in his 24th year as STI’s Director of QC.

STI added four other underground corrosion control technologies and five aboveground tank technologies.

Licenses were expanded into Canada and Mexico.

In 1998, STI acquired patents for Permatank and seven overseas licensees.

In 2000, with the Flameshield program, STI performed inspections on behalf of SwRI

On April 25, 2003, UL announced its Alternate Quality & Inspection Program whereby UL allowed STI tank fabricators to have STI perform up to two of UL’s inspections per year per shop.

STI develops quality evaluation rating system

STI works with STICO to also inspect non-STI labeled tanks

STI places greater inspection emphasis on fit-up, welding, and testing (not just corrosion control)

STICO provides grant money to support program

In 1997, Members offered to host a tour of their shop in conjunction with Annual QC Meeting Newberry
