Rating Rating Description:class 1a Products within this rating meet 90-100% of the criteria for dementia design principles.

Class 1b Products within this rating meet 75 - 89% of the criteria for dementia design principles.

Class 2 Products within this rating meet 60 -74% of the criteria for dementia design principles.

Not suitableProducts within this rating meet less than 60% of the criteria for dementia design principles and as a result are deemed unsuitable for use by people with dementia.

DSDC Product Accreditation Rating Key

The DSDC Accredited product logo is awarded on the merit of the individual product and/ or colourway. This accreditation does not merit the final application. Whilst every endeavor has been made to ensure the ratings are reflective of the product's suitability and applied use at the time of print, DSDC cannot be held responsible for the application of the final product, its performance or its interface with other products or finishes.

The Design Principals outlined within this document have been prepared for the purposes of the DSDC Design Product Accreditation and are informed by research in this field (Bowes et al, 2019), (Fleming et al, 2008) and we note that not all principals will be relevant to all products.

Additional Comments1. The DSDC accreditors were very impressed with the non-institutional design of the range. The various colourways and backgrounds provide options which lend themselves to public buildings as well as care homes and have the potential to be adapted to suit a number of different types of environments. We recommend that the approach to any sign layouts has a consistent united approach as this will help to reassure users to develop trust in the signage system as a whole. A limited, consistent palette used throughout a signage scheme is recommended.2. As a consideration for future improvements, we recommend that the pictogram illustrates a contrasting coloured toilet seat on all colourways. We acknowledge that this will be a challenge to achieve as the toilet seat, toilet and background would all need to contrast sufficiently. The reason we recommend this item is that it is an 'Essential' requirement within our building audit tool.

4. The DSDC Accreditors agreed that the signs were legible, clear and concise which is the key to understanding.

5. Signage positioning for buildings used by mainly older persons is recommended at 1200mm from finished floor level. This is lower than traditional 'eye level' height to allow for a downward gaze and stooped posture common in older age.

3. The level of tonal contrast achieved through the use of Light Reflectance Values is to be commended. Ensuring sufficient contrast will help maximise legibilty and visual clarity. This will enable pwd to see the signs more clearly, making the signs easier to use and navigate the space. We also recommend that there is sufficient tonal contrast between the sign plate and the wall or door on which the sign is fixed.

7. The use of a 3D toilet is to be commended as research has found that it is more recognisable to pwd than the international symbol of male and female. In some countries it is thought that the toilet would not be as recognisable as symbols of people but this depends on your target market.

6. The use of matt materials with minimal glare is to be commended as the older eye is more sensitive to glare and reflection. By avoiding glare and reflections, legibility is improved and confusion from localised glare is reduced.

8. Within the DSDC building audit tool, it is 'Essential' that any door with a toilet or toilet area should be painted a signature colour throughout the building. We would advise that toilet signs are mounted on doors as opposed to the wall adjacent and that the sign background contrasts sufficiently with the colour or tone of the door. Pwd find it difficult to learn new things so having to learn only one colour or cue for all toilet doors will make it easier for the pwd to locate the toilet and has been found to significantly reduce incidents of incontinence as a result.

For additional comments, please refer to Garnet Red page.1. We recommend that pattern is avoided in signs as it can be visually confusing. However, we acknowledge that the pattern on the colour samples was tone on tone so the pattern remained subtle. We do recommend that any timber backgrounds are free of knots as this can be viewed by the pwd as cracks, holes or an eye and could cause confusion and anxiety in how the sign is perceived.
