SELECTING THE SYSTEM
To determine which WavinRainwater System to select, threefactors need to be considered:-1) Preferred gutter and pipe cross
section, eg. half-round, profiledetc.
2) Desired colour.3) The effective roof area to be
drained.Clearly, the first two points are a
matter of personal preference takinginto consideration styles ofarchitecture and colour schemes usedin other elements of the building. Thethird point however is a matter ofcalculation. A rainwater system’scapacity to effectively drain a roofarea depends on four factors:-1) The gutter capacity.2) The level the gutter is laid to.3) The number of outlets.4) The position of the outlets.
In order to calculate the correctcombination, it is necessary to startby measuring the effective roof area.
Calculating the Effective Roof Area
Pitched Roof(see Figure 1)
BS 6367:1983 “ Code of Practicefor the Drainage of Roofs and PavedAreas” provides guidance on thedesign of rainwater systems. Amethod for calculating the effectiveroof area which takes intoconsideration the effects of wind is asfollows:-
1) Measure in metres -a) Length from eaves to ridge.b) Height of roof from eaves
to ridge.c) Length of roof.
2) Use the formula given in BS 6367:1983 (A + B
2) x C = Effective roof area
in m2
Example:-A = 6.0mB = 3.0mLength of roof = 9m
(6 + 32) x 9
(6 + 1.5) x 9 7.5 x 9 = 67.5m2 effective
roof area.If an outlet at one end is required,
then from Table 1 it can be seen thatWavin SuperLine is suitable - with amaximum roof area, laid level of75m2. If the outlet is required at thecentre, then again from Table 1 it canbe seen that all gutter systems aresuitable.
Wall Abutting Roof(see Figure 2)
Walls above abutting roofs willdrain onto the roofs below. For asingle wall, the effective catchmentarea is taken to be half the area ofthe elevation.
1) Measure in metres a) Length of wall above roof.b) Height of wall above roof.
2) Use the formula (D x E)1⁄2 = Effective wall area
in m2
The effective wall area (ifappropriate) should be added to theeffective roof area of the roof to bedrained.
Flat RoofFor roofs with a pitch less than
10˚, simply take the effective roofarea to be the plan of the roof.
Factors to Consider
a) Litre/Second Flow RatesThe nature of the Irish climate
Figure 1. Pitched Roof
Figure 2. Wall Abutting Roof
Wavin Osma Rainwater Systems
GENERAL DESIGN INFORMATION
25
makes it impossible to ensurecomplete safety from flooding andoverflow. Generally, it is satisfactoryto design a rainfall intensity of75mm/hour where overflow will notcause damage within the building.
To calculate the flow inlitres/second for 75mm/hour intensity, multiply the effective roof area (m2)by 0.0208.
b) Localised High Rates of FlowValley gutters and pipes
discharging from a higher roof to alower one can produce locally a highrate of rainwater flow. Where thisoccurs, consider using a gutter witha wider top width to reduce thechance of rainwater overshoot.
c) Gutter LevelGutter laid to a fall, eg. 1:600 is
more efficient that a gutter laid level.Number and Location of Outlet/s
For the same volume of rainwater, the greater the number of outletsalong a gutter and the shorter thedistance along the gutter therainwater has to travel, the moreefficient the system becomes.Example:-
A)
B)
C)
B is more efficient than A and C ismore efficient than B.
Outlets located near gutter anglesalso reduce the efficiency of thesystem. — i.e. Outlets situatedfurther than 2m from an angle reducethe roof area which can be drainedby 5%.
Outlets situated less than 2m froman angle reduces the roof area whichcan be drained by 10%.
Snow LoadingWavin Osma Rainwater Systems
are designed to accommodate theweight of snow likely from normalfalls. However, in areas subject to
heavy snowfalls, it is recommendedthat the distance between SupportBrackets is reduced to a maximum of750mm centres. Furthermore, BS6367:1983 section 5.4 gives detailsof precautions which should be takento prevent the accumulation of snowon roofs. These include the use ofsnowboards and snowguards.
LeavesIn areas where trees are close to
an overhang roof, care should betaken to ensure that gutters andpipes do not become clogged withwet leaves. Proprietary plasticmeshes can be fitted over the gutterto eliminate this problem.
CHEMICAL RESISTANCEAs Wavin Osma Rainwater systems
are manufactured from PVC-U, theyare totally unaffected by even themost heavily polluted atmosphere orby impurities in rainwater.
Wavin Osma Rainwater systemsare self-coloured. If an alternativecolour is required, they areunaffected by normal householdpaints. Oil based gloss paint is themost suitable for this purpose. Lightlyroughening the surface withsandpaper and cleaning prior topainting will give the best results.
PHYSICAL ATTACKRainwater systems are not
susceptible to insect or vermin attack. However, if downpipes are
installed flush to the wall (eg.Amazon), then this makes it difficultfor vandals to remove. Unlike castiron systems, plastic has no scrapvalue and is therefore less likely to betargeted.
ULTRA-VIOLET LIGHTPVC-U pipework and fittings have
resistance characteristics to theeffects of ultra violet attack and, although they may fade slightly aftera number of years of exposure tostrong sunlight, they are integrallyunaffected.
TIMBER PRESERVATIVESDue to the aggressive nature of
some timber preservatives, it isessential that timber fascias whichhave been treated with preservativesare allowed to dry before fixing PVC-U gutter fittings. Refer tomanufacturers’ recommendations.

HANDLING & STORAGE
HANDLINGAlways be careful to avoid damage
when handling gutter and pipe.Excessive scratching or scoring ofgutter and pipe not only affects theappearance but can also affect thejoint sealing.
Cold weather reduces the impactstrength of most plastics so extracare should be taken when handlinggutter and pipe in wintry conditions.
Load and unload loose gutter orpipe by hand and avoid using skids. When loose pipes have beentransported one inside the other, always remove the inner pipe first.
STORAGE
Block BundlesStore block bundles, loose gutter
or pipe on a reasonably flat surfacefree from sharp projections.
Block bundles can be stored up tothree high without extra side supportsor bearers. In addition, block bundleswill remain free standing when cut.
Care should be taken whenremoving gutter or pipe from bundlesas the straps are under considerabletension and may flail when cut.
Loose GutterLoose gutter or pipe will require
side supports at least every 2 metres. These supports should preferably
consist of battens at least 75mmwide. Ideally, loose gutter or pipeshould be uniformly supportedthroughout their entire length. If thisis not possible, place timber supportsat least 75mm wide at 1 metremaximum centres beneath the pipe.
FittingsFittings supplied in plastic bags
should be stored away from directsunlight. If this cannot be avoided, open the bags to prevent a build-upof temperature.
Silicone lubricant should be storedaway from any heat source and outof direct sunlight.
JOINTING
Pipe/Gutter CuttingPipe cut on site must be clean cut
at right angles to its axis. The cut endshould then be deburred with ascraper. If the cut end is to beinserted into a ring seal or push-fitjoint, it is essential that the spigotend is chamfered to ensure that thesealing ring is not displaced duringinsertion.
Gutter should be cut using a finetoothed hand saw ensuring that thecut is clean and square. The cut endshould then be deburred with ascraper.

Ring-Seal/Push-Fit Jointing (RoofLine Pipe and Pipe Fittings)1. Spigot or plain ended fittings
should already be chamfered. Please ensure that pipe cut onsite is also chamfered (seeFigure 6).
2. Check that the sealing ring isproperly seated in its housing inthe socket of the fitting.
3. Make sure that both the pipe andfitting spigot and ring- seal/push-fit socket are dry, clean and freefrom grit or dust. Note any deepscratches on the pipe or fittingspigot as these may prevent thesealing ring from forming a water-tight seal.
4. Lubricate evenly around the pipeor fitting spigot. Do not lubricateinside the socket. Do not usewashing-up liquid as a lubricant.
5. Make sure that the components tobe joined are correctly aligned.
6. Push the pipe or fitting spigot fullyinto the socket. Mark the pipe orfitting spigot at the socket faceand then withdraw it by aminimum of 12mm for RoofLinepipework (see Figure 7).
7. Make a subsequent check toensure that the expansion gap isnot lost during further installationwork.
GUTTER DESIGN ANDINSTALLATION
Gutter Joint DesignAll Wavin rainwater systems are
designed using the Flexiclip gutterjoint which makes it easy to connectgutter to fittings. This is because it isthe clip which is flexed rather thanthe whole component, ensuring apositive, permanently watertight jointevery time. Note that the Flexiclipshould not be removed from thefittings (see Figure 8).
Gutter FallGutter can be installed either level
or to a slight fall. The high capacitycharacteristics of the Wavin OsmaAmazon profile is such that itsperformance is not compromised bybeing laid level. However, layinggutter to a fall will increase the flowcapacity and increase the area of roofthat can be drained, particularly if thedownpipe is positioned centrally.Silting will also be prevented. A fallof 1:600 (25mm in 15m) isrecommended for all gutters.
Gutter ExpansionIt is recommended that all fittings
are firmly secured to counter theeffects of accumulated thermalmovement. An allowance forexpansion must be made when fixingthe gutter. Gutter jointing fittings aremarked indicating the position towhich the gutter should be inserted(see Figure 9).
Connecting the GutterAll Flexiclip fittings are supplied
complete and ready for use. It is notnecessary to remove the clip from thefitting in order to make a joint. Thegutter is connected by laying thegutter to the ‘gutter end’ line andplacing it under the part of the clipnearest the fascia, pulling the gutterdown with the fingers and pushingthe clip over the gutter with thethumbs (see Figure 10).
The Gutter Jointing Bracket(OT.005) or Gutter Unions (OT.009,5T.509, 6T.609 or 7T.709) are usedto connect the gutter (see Figure 11).The Jointing Bracket has a singlescrew fixing, allowing the fitting topivot to the required gutter fall (seeFigure 12). The Union should besupported at its centre by a SupportBracket allowing the fitting to pivot tothe required gutter fall.

Gutter SupportThe RoundLine and SuperLine
systems include a single screw fixingGutter Support Bracket, whilst theRoundLine system also offers a highstrength three screw-hole SupportBracket (OT.039) for use where thetimber fascia is of poor quality eg. onolder buildings where the gutter isbeing replaced. A two screw-holeSupport Bracket Bracer (OT.119) isincluded in the SuperLine systemagain to give additional support tothe gutter when used in conjunctionwith Gutter Support Brackets(5T.519) on poor quality timberfascias (see Figure 13). The Support
Bracket Bracer may also be used inconjunction with the Gutter SupportBracket (OT.019) in the RoundLineSystem as an alternative to the threescrew-hole Support Bracket (OT.039).
The RoofLine system includes athree screw-hole Support Bracket(6T.619) and the use of all threescrew fixings is recomended, especially on high buildings and inareas exposed to strong winds.
The Amazon system offers thechoice between a four screw GutterSupport Bracket (7T.719) and aGutter Hanging Bracket (7T.749) forunobtrusive support.
The Support Bracket furthest fromthe Outlet should be fixed first, allowing for the required fall and
ensuring sufficient space is left belowthe roof tiles to fix the gutter.
Gutter support should be fixed atmaximum centres of one metre andwithin 150mm of both sides of anyangle or at the end of a gutter run.
Gutter PositioningGutter should be placed as high as
possible and positioned centrallybelow the roof edge.
Installation of Gutter Support Bracket
The traditional bracket can beinstalled in the conventional mannerby stringing a plumb line along thebase of the bracket and then fixing atone metre maximum centres.

INSTALLATION
Installation of Gutter Hanging Bracket
An alternative method ofinstallation is required for the AmazonGutter Hanging Bracket. The followingsteps need to be followed: (seeFigure 15).1. A plumb line should be strung
between the highest bracket andthe bracket fixed adjacent to theposition of the Running Outlet. The line should be fixed to theunderside of the lip at the front ofthe bracket.
2. The brackets should be positionedat one metre maximum centresleaving appropriate space for eachrequired Running Outlet or GutterUnion. The bracket fixed adjacentto the Running Outlet should thenbe removed.
3. Fix Running Outlet, Gutter Union,or Gutter Angle on to gutterlength before offering gutter intoposition.
4. The gutter length should be heldin position under the centrebracket and remaining bracketssnapped shut.
5. The roofing felt should be notchedand dressed around the HangingBracket where required.
6. Continue fixing gutter lengths asoulined in steps three and four, making sure that each length ispositioned correctly in eachprevious jointing socket beforelocking bracket swivel device.
7. After the gutter and fittings havebeen assembled, the finalalignment should be made andthe fittings screwed to the fascia board.
Connection to Metal GuttersRoundLine offers Connectors to
metal half-round and ogee profiledgutters. Connection is made byclipping the PVC-U gutter into theappropriate connector and bolting tothe metal gutter, sealing the boltedjoint with waterproof mastic.
Half-round Connector (OT.008) -bolt either outside the spigot end orinside the socket end of the metalgutter (see Figure 16).
Ogee Connectors (OT.014 - LHand OT.015 - RH) - bolt inside oroutside the metal gutter dependingon its size.
4in ogee gutter - fit Connector tothe outside of both the socket andspigot.
41⁄2in ogee gutter - fit Connectorinside the socket and outside thespigot.
5in ogee gutter - fit Connector onthe inside of both the socket andspigot.
Rise and Fall BracketsThese are designed for use on
buildings without a fascia board andas an alternative to Rafter Brackets.
All half-round systems include aBow and Pin with a range of Build-inand Drive-in Spikes in either 200mmor 300mm lengths to form Rise andFall Bracket Assemblies.
Gutters are jointed with a GutterUnion and are supported at the Unionwith a Rise and Fall BracketAssembly. Intermediate supportshould be provided at maximum onemetre centres.

INSTALLATION
The Bow is connected to astainless steel threaded rod whichcan be raised or lowered to give thegutter the required fall.
The Spike should either be built ordriven into the mortar joint below thelast but one brick course (see Figures17 and 18).
Rafter BracketsRafter Brackets are used when
there is no fascia board and as analternative to Rise and Fall Brackets. All Rafter Brackets are PVC coatedsteel for protection against corrosion.
A range of 300mm long, profiledTop and Side Rafter Brackets areavailable for each half-round systemand additionally, RoundLine andSuperLine offer a range of 300mmAdjustable Top and Side RafterBrackets.
Gutters are jointed using a GutterUnion or Gutter Jointing Bracket andsupported at maximum centres ofone metre with either type of RafterBracket. Due to the design criteria ofrafters, if one metre spacing cannotbe obtained, the smaller dimensionshould prevail ie. 600mm.
Gutter lengths should be cut tomatch rafter distances so that GutterUnions can be securely fixed.
Top Rafter Brackets(OT.745, 5T.595, 6T.695)
These must be fixed before theroof is tiled. If a fall is needed, usethe Adjustable Top and Side RafterBrackets (see Figure 19).
Side Rafter Brackets(OT.746, 5T.596, 6T.696)
These may be fixed after the roofhas been tiled. They are particularlyuseful when replacing gutter on anexisting building. If a fall is needed, the position of the Brackets on theside of the rafter can be altered (seeFigure 20).
Adjustable Top and Side Rafter Brackets(OT.145/146)
These may be used as analternative to the shaped RafterBrackets for the RoundLine andSuperLine systems. Both Bracketshave a slotted hole in the front face inwhich is fitted a rust proofed wing nutand bolt for connection to a GutterSupport Bracket. When a fall isneeded, the wing nut should bereleased and the Bracket moved upor down as necessary (see Figure 21).
ScrewsUse No. 10 rustless roundhead
wood screws to fix Brackets, Anglesand Outlets to the fascia board.

PIPE DESIGN AND INSTALLATION
31
Pipe Joint DesignThe RoundLine and SuperLine
systems use the same range of 68mm(21⁄2in) pipe and fittings. The PipeConnector, Branch and all Bends havean aperture socket which gives aninterference fit, eliminating any needfor solvent welding and is designed toconceal the 10mm expansion gapbetween pipe and fittings. This givesa completed joint which is neat andstreamlined. The inserted pipe hasroom for expansion when its end isjust visible.
The RoofLine system utilises pipeand fittings from the 110mm (4in)Wavinsoil system.
Amazon pipe is 70mm (23⁄4in)square, is plain ended and fits almostflush to the wall. The Pipe Connector(7T.723), Offset Bends (7T.725/726),Pipe Branch (7T.735) and HopperHead (7T.730) all have an aperturesocket designed to conceal the 10mmexpansion gap between downpipeand fittings, resulting in a neat andstreamlined joint (see Figure 22).
ExpansionProvision for expansion must be
made when installing PVC-Udownpipe.
a) RoundLine and SuperLineWhen jointing RoundLine and
SuperLine downpipe, use a PipeConnector (OT.024) supported by aSocket Bracket (OT.033/038). A gapof 10-12mm must be left betweenthe top of each length of pipe and thefitting to which it is connected.
b) RoofLineTo allow for expansion, insert the
spigot fully into the socket, mark thespigot at the socket face, thenwithdraw the spigot 10-12mm.Injection moulded fittings in theRoofLine system are already markedwith the correct depth of entry. Pushthe spigot into the socket until the‘depth of entry’ mark is just visible.
c) AmazonA gap of 10-12mm must be left
between the top of each length ofpipe and the fitting to which it isconnected.
Connection to Gutter Outletsa) RoundLine
Plain ended pipe will connectdirectly to the sockets of the RunningOutlet and the Swivelock RunningOutlet (OT.624/625).
b) SuperLinePlain ended pipe and the sockets
of Offset Bends connect directly tothe spigot of the Running Outlet(5T.508).
c) RoofLinePlain ended pipe and the spigot of
Offset bends will connect directly tothe spigot of the Running Outlet.RoofLine pipe will connect toasbestos or cast iron spigots using aConnector (4S.134) and Gasket(4S.119) (see Figure 23).
d) AmazonPlain ended pipe and the sockets
of Offset Bend (7T.726) and the PipeWall Offset (7T.739) will connectdirectly to the socket of the RunningOutlet (7T.706). For connection to
68mm round downpipe, a Square toRound Adaptor is available (7T.737)which will fit directly onto the socketof the outlet.
Offsetsa) RoundLine
The unique Swivelock Outlet hasan integral offset bend which issecurely attached to the outlet. Thisensures that there are no gaps orsagging connections between theoutlet and offset bend. The benditself can be swivelled in any directionto line up with the downpipe. Astandard Socket Offset Bend(OT.025) is used at the other end ofthe offset (see Figure 24).
b) SuperLine and RoofLineThese are easily assembled using
either two Offset Bends(OT.025/026) for SuperLine or4S.445 and an offcut of pipe forRoofLine (see Figure 25).

Shallow Offsetsa) RoundLine and SuperLine
A shallow offset of 90mmprojection can be made up on site forRoundLine from the bent SwivelockOutlet (OT.625) and an Offset Bend(OT.026) or for SuperLine with OffsetBends (OT.025/026). A 70 mmprojection can be achieved by cuttingback the Offset Bend (OT.026) spigotlength by 20mm (see Figure 27).
b) RoofLineA shallow offset of 137mm
projection can be made up using twoOffset Bends (4S.444) (see Figure28). Deeper offsets can be made upas shown in Figure 29.
c) AmazonThe minimum offset projection
which can be made up using twostandard Offset Bends (7T.726) is86mm. Typical offsets possible withthe Amazon system are shown inFigures 30, 31 and 32.

b) AmazonOn installations featuring
‘tudorised’ beams on external walls,it may be necessary to use a PipeBracket Spacer (7T.731) which isdesigned for use with the PipeBracket, Pipe Connector and PipeShoe. The Pipe Bracket Spacer can beadjusted by cutting to the requireddepth (see Figure 35).
Eaves with Soffita) RoundLine and SuperLine
A small eaves projection or a fasciaboard fitted direct to an external wallis sometimes preferred to thetraditional soffit design. In suchcases, the rainwater pipe should bekept parallel to the wall by fitting aBracket Spacer (OT.031) behind thePipe Bracket or Pipe/Socket Bracket. The Bracket Spacer moves the pipe36mm further away from the wall andputs it directly in line with the gutteroutlet (see Figure 36).
b) AmazonOn installations where the fascia
board is fitted to an external wall orwhere there is a small eavesprojection, a Pipe Wall Offset(7T.739) should be used (see Figure37).

CONNECTIONS TO EXISTING IRON PIPEa) RoundLine and SuperLine
Rusty or cracked cast iron pipemay be replaced easily with PVC-U.Any sound part of an existing castiron system can be retained and a68mm PVC-U pipe connected directlyto the open socket of a 21⁄2in ironpipe. Mastic or other sealingcompounds are not needed (seeFigure 38).
b) RoofLineTo connect 110mm RoofLine pipe
to a 4in cast iron spigot, use a4S.134 Connector and a 4S.119Gasket.1. Fit the Gasket over the spigot of
the iron pipe.2. Then push the Connector firmly
onto the pipe.3. Heat the socket of the Connector
evenly all round until it shrinks tofit tightly around the Gasket andiron pipe. (see Figure 23).
Access FittingsThe RoundLine, SuperLine,
RoofLine and Amazon systems alloffer Access Fittings to allow forAccess into the downpipe system. The OT.274 from the RoundLine/SuperLine system and the 4S.274from the RoofLine system both have aspigot to connect straight into thedrainage system.
A Pipe Wall Offset (7T.759) andAccess Pipe (7T.755) both provideaccess into the Amazon downpipesystem.
CONNECTION TO BELOW GROUND DRAINAGE
There are a number of ways ofterminating rainwater downpipe atground level, ie. using an adaptor, apipe shoe, connecting directly into agully or directly into a drain socket.
Installation of Rainwater Adaptor The OT.149 Adaptor can be used
with either a spigot or socket of a110mm pipe.
a) RoundLineFit the Adaptor over the spigot or
