keep calm and don’t blink
1. right between the eyes
beware of ying iphones and crashing
police boxes and bright blue suits.
every friday nds t he physics r oom whispering
tonight's the night,
and your brother always looks e xactly like you but you manage
to be similar and different at the same time,and you steal his sh orts e ven though you hate him—
that is a bsurd.
we all had happy childhoods d idn't we, and
this i s w hen we're supposed to be growing up isn't it
?
we h ave co nversations in panera a bout the mechanics
of lucid dreams an d cloning mammoths
but we run from stone a ngels an d we run
through car dealership parking lots a nd we make scenes
in public p laces a nd that is a bsurd too.
2. let's p aint our walls w ith faces w e read about in box-shaped diaries;
paint them portal blue and funeral blue and sunset-after-the-rain blue—
draw our hands o n the sky t hat you're ying through,don't forget to pack the smell of my s kin the back
of your mind and remember to meet me in a ll your stiff-necked dreams.
our beds a re cr yogenics cha mbers lled with brain d amage a nd

here are some instructions;
how to y a n a eroplane o ver the sea—put on your records,
adopt a scottish accent, tell that girl
with the yogurt in her eye to fuck off;
how to say i love you—nd sci- sh ow pilots o n netix, hold hands a nd
say n umbers like t en into the o bscure places on the b ack o f my neck.
3. m aking m ental breakdowns p retty is t he rst step
towards building your own personal paradox m achine—
i offer you tips for surviving long ights;
one read moby dick b ut don't even think a bout annotating,
two keep your phone close and your incubus cl oser,three don't stop thinking about amsterdam,
four step lightly o n the clouds (or you'll hurt their feelings),
ve don't forget that you can open any door in the universe by snapping your ngers.
the key to building a paradox machine is b eing chilled when it's w arm out but sweating
anyway, reading books a bout things l ike h eaven in the dark,
believing in improbable things like cold and time travel,
lying static o n couches with your heart pounding,wearing sandals b ackwards a nd saying that you're surviving when you're living.
4. don't forget to remember to breathe.
5. e very great ruler was a s tarfucker
and polluted with their own ambition but you
already kn ew that didn't you, you know all about
white whales an d bathhouses an d galaxies;
what if the world was l ike a frisbee,
at and constantly getting stuck in trees?

and the thing we both know is t hat the world
is s teady a nd plodding like a cello, and
it is love that's like the frisbee,
and so are we, aren't we,
and i guess we'll just keep ying until we
stop.

the obligatory d arkness that left you pale;
washed out but not washed up—sleep-deprived and indigo but not
quite apathetic
and yo u m ade waterfalls, cascading
rivers of tropical ow and surrealist staircases;
black-clad, white-footed, with dancing ngers;
there were shadows t hat clung to your shoulders—
and in the bone-bleached light of

colossal
see what we see
on the sea there is a continent oftea-drinkers a nd minor galaxies;
there is nothing left to loose
pretend to know the spilling of time and the chasing of drinks;
dropping things t hat made the stars
in your head roar so loud
you forgot spring and that you were ever in new jersey,
tile oors burn your feet as
you lope off to bed;
and your captive audience ate
up the crescendos t hat clamoured out your ngertips,
but what they d idn't know is t hat
they a re always there, pressing against your skull and
releasing them is t he only way you can sleep at night

there are a million little boys named matt with bright smiles and warm eyes and
one day their morbid curiosity will kill them like a nuked schrodinger's cat.
you have been warned; they will never love you.

peroxide, baby
yeah, i see you
british boy blue, duke of whiteout country;
otherwise known as baby black eyes
you wouldn't know it but you've got a penchant
for falling in love with boys in crop tops
and girls with nipple rings
you wouldn't know it but
you're a 90's boy, boy—
& a thousand years ago, when man
first dyed its hair indigo and started wearing tight pants
and ridiculous shoes they said
"i swear by your pale torso to uphold
the pillars of grunge and opinionated gentlemen,
we promise to never breathe by anyone's standards,
or to allow people to cut our hair"
hey, babe, let me tell you about the girl who ruled the world
guess what she didn't wear black lipstick because she thought it was trashy
but she fell in love with a boy who had tan skin
though she said she'd only love pale
baby, baby, you're a scuffed-up mall rat seconds away from being stepped on
and there are legions of tongue-tied ashgirls you could call yours
but, if only they knew who you were
they hollowed out their eye sockets with eyeliner and hard drugs but
i did it myself with my own heartbeats
you can drink their milk and taste their skin, but i bet
they'll be plastic, babe, and i bet
they'll fuck like the blow-up dolls they drew tattoos on to feel edgy
honey, you're a one-in-a-million guy,
but them american girls only fall for boys named johnny—

& you're like a ball n chain around my ankle
& the pull of bass in my veins
fisheyed, deadly neurotoxin
i never did listen when they told me of the dangers of battery acid
tonight the church is a rave-yard—
tonight when the bass drops
so will you
babe, there are frogs in the night
and headaches in the morning
but tonight all the girls are out
with sweat on their scalps and bleach
in their smiles and tonight
if you dance with me i can tell you
that tomorrow will never come
babe, you're 1000 degrees and babe,
you're on fire
pinky-swear, i've always been radioactive
so choke down that margarita, honey,
wipe away your tequila smile
you are in america,
where love is using first names in poetry—
but this isn't love, babe, this is a
drunken tattoo you only half regret—
names in big letters across our chests
and the lingering scent of your fingertips
burning glowstick trails through the air

pinned your satellite to my d ashboard and it sparkled like bowie
and sometimes i need to shout need to scream like the time i felt the bones o f your feet in my h ands
could've sw orn it was you when you smiled at me from across m y ba sement
and it was a lmost real

mezzanine
choke on beetle's teethshining black chrome, waiting in dripping fearless
and oh how the enamel rain falls
bleeding out your iron
looks like nail polish, smells like fate
not giving up
ran up a thousand flights of stairs because the elevator broke downbut then you remembered you only dreamed it
tripped stumbled up a thousand flights of stairs to reach her
but you dreamed it ,
blind, fearless
execution hood upon your head like a crown
and when the building collapsed everything broke
grinding the spark plugs in your stomach
grinding your verbs to dust
inside you,
trapdoor snapped shut
padlocks and icy walls
froze over and you ,
hand over hand over heart
up the ladder cold metal burns your skin
climbs to the rain to god
through steel wool clouds
lightning flashed struck your skeleton
coughed up x rays for a week
got so close to the roof of the world
got so close but you never quite

got to your house in the middle of the night,
an honest confessional a mess,
poetry up and dow n my arms
got to the part where you let me

looking like the business end of a cigarette i was c urling like smoke
around your head your precious l tered air

disregarded the regards you gave
i stayed awake through all your days a nyway yo u should've known
2.
and oh you tasted just like my h eartbeat in my m outh
i forgot you broken-voiced but for the feel of your shirt
just like holding a shadow and
must've been too tired to tell you
so you p iggybacked me to bed,
murmured nonsense t he whole way 'cause you knew
i loved to hear you speak
your very bed upstairs w here yo u laid me d own,
wrapped me in a blanket then wrapped me in you and st ayed there

and a b ad case of moon fever for my troubles
looked into yo u when
suddenly a wall of sound turned
all my bones to dust
and i saw the stars
like t he whole universe was t aking m y hand
i heard them whispering to e ach o ther
and they a ll had your voice
don't know if i ever told you that
it's a sound that gives m e panic a ttacks
i circled back round a dying star
it told me that all its b rothers w ere already d ead
and when they sa id their last words no body heard them
because no one was t here
i passed through a nebula near earth and
it got all over my skin andin my air and down my throat
wouldn't stop falling d own from my eye lashes
or tinting my b reaths w ith gold

and winter light struck you
for a moment, glowing
in your skin
for a moment,
for a momentwe reached higher
climbing cranes, touched
the blue with our hands
color ran all down our arms
ten more song s

refused,

lipstick d iamonds
condensed to an internet mythos
and kurt cobain’s t wisted gospel
further warped by the world-wearies;
webpage w////s,
barely literate in the ux of their own language
syntax always e scaped them
if it was written in anything but spray paint or eyeliner
i talk a lot about promises,
of oaths t aken lakeside;
sealed in blood whilst clinging to wavecrushed rocks
lied in your studboots w ith
scraped knees p eeking from tight blue jeans
dirt swept hair like the wind made it so
but here; there was a legend of stars
that burned in winter clad
bleeding on the running river of the sun
while yo u threw stones through windows
taken by a pixilated rebellion and
failed to understand that when everything goes u p in smoke
the atmosphere pays it no heed

lover
not my friend, no, just a piece of
pale meat in a sea o f steaksstake you in the heart, vampire,
nail me to a cross
whilst dousing yourself with holy water
and it sounds l ike a song b y the deftones;
because i can’t hear you,
your voice from underwater like cerebral uid
drowning in the liquid from my e ardrums
down,
but i never lost sight of your face
and god damn, what a face
i swear, you’d look like the moon
if the moon wore pink l ipstick
and hung between the ocean and the night
between my he aring and my sight,
i’m so damn far from the light but i’ll take you
standing two feet in front of me and wreathed in neon, i’ll take you
drenched in sweat to the sound of a heart beating,
just like the sound my breatak
as i lay, alone, in my b ed,
singing songs for sex o r against it,
