Now Enrolling for 2017Bookings: [email protected]

Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Staff,

    Welcome Back

Term 2 began with a moving Anzac Day Service as a tribute to the men and women who fought for our freedom. Thank you to Mrs Kirstie Mason along with her Year 10 History class who made us very proud.

No matter how long the break might be somehow it never seems to be long enough. Nonetheless I hope the girls are prepared to face whatever challenges that lay ahead especially in working towards achieving their absolute best.

    Mother’s Day

We commemorate Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, May 8. I hope and pray that all our mothers, grandmothers and the many other significant women in our lives are always treasured as special people. It is their unconditional love and guidance that helps us to grow and become the people that we are. May God always keep a watchful eye over them.

On Monday May 9, we will be celebrating Mother’s Day with a Mass at Mary Immaculate Church at 9am followed by morning tea back at the College. To date we have about 40 mothers, grandmothers and/or other significant women who are able to join us.

Let us also remember that the month of May is dedicated to our Lady, the Mother of Jesus, the Mother of our Church and our spiritual Mother. This is a time we dedicate to the reciting of the Rosary.

An Evening with Professor Ian Hickie on Adolescent Mental Health

Marcellin College has kindly sent our College community an invitation to attend an evening with Professor Ian Hickie on Adolescent Mental Health. Professor Ian Hickie is well known for his work and expertise in this area and this is a wonderful opportunity. The details are in a flyer that has been included in this newsletter. I have taken the liberty to include his biographical details from the University of Sydney website. If you would to read more about his work, this is the link Professor Ian Hickie.

Professor Ian Hickie, AM is a psychiatrist and prominent mental health campaigner. He is a former NHMRC Australia Fellow heading the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre as

    A Prayer For All Mothers

    Loving God,

so you watch over your Church.

    Bless these women,

    that they may be strengthened

    as Christian mothers.

Let the example of their faith and love

    shine forth.

Grant that we, their sons and daughters,

    may honour them always

with a spirit of profound respect

    and unconditional love.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.

    NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment conducted across Australia for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. These are scheduled for next week on May 10-12. Friday 13 May will be a day allocated for catch-up NAPLAN tests should a student miss a test.

NAPLAN tests the skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. These skills in literacy and numeracy are developed over time through the school curriculum. Please ensure you have read the information in this newsletter with your daughter so that both you and your daughter know when she is doing her tests and what equipment she needs to bring with her.

    Year 7 2017 Enrolments

The enrolment period for Year 7 2017 is well and truly under way. We have begun interviewing prospective students and families.

    From the Deputy PrincipalANZAC Tribute

Term 2 has began with our Stage 5 students presenting a very moving ANZAC Day ceremony. This year marked 100 years since the Battle of the Somme and the poetry and reflections afforded the whole College community an opportunity to contemplate the significance of the sacrifices of those who fought.

Comments made by parents and students are often about how welcoming our community is, the wonderful upgrades to our facilities and the great reputation we have.

    Fees

A reminder that all Term 1 school fees accounts should now be settled. If you have fees outstanding please make sure that these are paid as soon as possible. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, you are advised to make an appointment to discuss the possible options that may be available to you. Make a time to speak to Mrs Kim Parente, Mrs Damienne Forrester or myself.

    And finally

Our community has made a great start to Term 2. We have many things happening this term as usual.

Finally, I am looking forwarding to seeing many of you at our Parents’ Association Meeting Tuesday May 10 at 6pm. We will gather in the Mezzanine level of the Library.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

Blessings on you and your families,

    Antoinette McGahan

    ANZAC Day Ceremony

  • Uniform and Blazers Week 3

Students have returned in their winter uniform and as the weather was hot in the first weeks they did not have to wear their blazers. It is, however, expected that all student wear their blazers to and from school starting Monday Week 3. Girls are permitted to wear either long or short sleeve shirts and stockings are optional.

    NAPLAN

A reminder that NAPLAN testing takes place in Week 3. This test provides the College with a snapshot of where students are at in terms of literacy and numeracy. This then allows us to implement targeted interventions to support and extend our students. It is not an exam students should worry about.

    Expectations in Relation to Behaviour

As a College we are very protective of the reputation we have in the community. We often get feedback from the public commending girls for their exemplary behaviour and it is this sense of respect that we actively promote. However there are some students who forget that when they wear the College uniform they represent St Clare’s and any negative or inappropriate behaviour reflects on the College as a whole. It is expected that all girls are respectful when on public transport and that they stand for paying members of the public, particularly the elderly, when on public buses.

    Social Media

We want to ensure that all students come to school feeling safe, included and supported. It has come to our attention that some students are participating in inappropriate behaviour on social media that constitutes cyber-bullying. I encourage all parents to actively check their daughter’s use of social media to ensure they are not posting inappropriate material, comments or photos. Similarly, regular checks will ensure you are aware of any cyber-bullying that they may be experiencing. We do not tolerate any form of bullying and as I have said on numerous occasions, please contact your daughter’s Dean if you have any concerns.

    Poetry in Action

On Tuesday 4 April, in lesson one, all of Year 7 gathered in the Hall for an English incursion. We were visited by a group called ‘Poetry in Action’ who entertained and taught us about rhythm, rhyme, alliteration and imagery. They engaged us by presenting and educating us through the use of humour and presenting information in a fun and interesting way. This was a great experience and we learnt so much. We look forward to them coming back in the future.

    Annabelle Wendler, Year 8

Recently the Year 7 and 8’s had the privilege to watch members of the ‘Poetry in Action’ team perform an entertaining play highlighting the fundamentals of poetry. I found the play extremely humorous, engaging and it definitely caught the audience's attention. It was a great experience and taught us about the language techniques of poetry as well as how to compose a well-structured poem to have impact. ‘Poetry in Action’ gave examples of extremely significant poetry that has been written around the world, then performed them in a unique way which we, the audience, could relate to. I thought ‘Poetry in Action’ was one of the best possible ways to learn about poetry, as we all enjoyed attending such an educational and captivating performance.

STAGE 5 MUSIC EXCURSION- Sydney Opera House & Sydney Conservatorium of Music

Last term, the elective music students, were privileged to hear the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and attend a tour of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

We were able to watch the Sydney Symphony Orchestra practice a piece in an open rehearsal that they were performing that night. The piece of music was Bruckner’s ‘Symphony No. 4’, as well as Berio’s ‘Violin Concerto’. All classes studied the music scores of each piece, as well as played some main musical motifs that appeared in the piece. We saw various instruments and where they were placed in the orchestra. We heard how all the instruments would tune to the oboe and best of all we heard all the instruments playing their piece. This enabled us to identify instruments and watch them play their sections of the piece. It was a very valuable experience because instead of listening to a piece on a CD, we were able to visually watch and remember the performance.

After this we had a heritage tour of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. We learnt about the history of the area and were taught about how it came to be. We learnt how the building was once horse stables and now was a significant place for students and

    Stage 5 Music Excursion

people to learn music and pursue their dreams. One of the best things about this was we were able to go past extremely talented musicians offices and listen to them practice. It was amazing to be surrounded by talent and incredible sounds.

This was a marvellous day where we were able to experience fantastic opportunities and had lots of fun while we were at it. The open rehearsal and the heritage tour of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music are experiences that I will remember for a long time.

World Youth Day Krakow 2016 Preparation

On Thursday the 28 April, Jasmine Wyld, Mrs Traill-John and myself visited Domremy College in Five Dock for our first preparation session for World Youth Day, which is taking place later this year in Kraków, Poland.

The afternoon consisted of getting to know the other students from Years 10 and 11 from the many schools that we will be travelling with us throughout our pilgrimage. The preparation session also helped to prepare and inform us on the importance of Mercy and significance of World Youth Day.
