Cuba Trip

Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology cardiothoracic radiologist Fernando Gutierrez, MD, led a delegation of nine Washington University School of Medicine physicians to attend a

pulmonary medicine conference in Cuba in what may be the first such event open to U.S. doctors since the opening of diplomatic relations last year.

Gutierrez, a native of Cuba, attended the pulmonary conference as a member of the Latin American Thoracic Society, which has members throughout Central and South America. He directs its virtual radiology department.

Besides Gutierrez, Sanjeev Bhalla, MD, and Andy Bierhals, MD, represented MIR. The remaining six

physicians were from the cardiology, pulmonary medicine and cardiothoracic surgery departments. In addition to attending the conference, the Washington University group toured two of Cuba’s premier hospitals. Although primary medical care is excellent, Cuba is lagging behind in high-technology. It has, for example, no PET scanners.

“There is potential for developing a relationship (with the hospitals),” says Gutierrez, who has tentatively planned another trip in October 2017. “However, much needs to be improved.”

This was the first time Gutierrez returned to Cuba since his family left the island nation in 1961. He was 13 years old.

Newman Education Center.“The dedicated and talented individuals we honor have made significant and

lasting contributions to the School of Medicine,” says Perlmutter. “By doing so, they have improved the lives of countless individuals enriching our academic community and beyond in immeasurable ways.”

A highly respected educator, Middleton is a national leader in diagnostic ultrasound and is acknowledged as the architect behind the expansion and subsequent international recognition of the ultrasound service at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology.

“Dr. Middleton is an excellent radiologist and a great clinician who always goes above and beyond his call of duty to do the very best for the patient,” says Vamsi Narra, MD. “He is a pioneer in ultrasound imaging and clinical applications and is recognized as one of the best in his field. This award is a well-deserved honor.”

Radiology Learning Center Upgrades

The Resident Lounge, located in Mallinckrodt’s Radiology Learning Center (located on the 1st floor next to Scarpellino Auditorium), has undergone a facelift!

Renovation commenced with removal of a wall that allowed the extension of the existing center and reutilization of what was

once unused space. Typical hospital sectional pieces were replaced with new, more comfortable and contemporary furniture including a large and small couch, numerous chairs and ottomans, and throw pillows.

New artwork was placed throughout the lounge area. All photos are canvas prints of beautiful St. Louis scenery taken by MIR faculty, adding a personal touch to the space. On the electronics side, flat-screen television was added, and all computers were upgraded to feature dual monitors.

The project also included refurbishment of the existing library. Shelving was removed and the book collection condensed, allowing room for a counter, phone, couch, and two additional computer workstations.

Residents are pleased with the changes, noting the space is now more accessible and user-friendly. The work was finished in late 2015.
