THE POETIC IMPOSSIBILITY TO MANAGE THE INFINITEART GALLERY7 FEBRUARY – 2 MAY 2015

In 2012, Edgar Martins was granted unparalleled access to the European Space Agency and its partners. Over the past two years he has travelled to 20 locations across Europe and South America to shoot in classified facilities such as test centres, robotics departments, launch sites, astronaut training centres and satellite assembly rooms.

Martins’ ground-breaking series documents a variety of ESA’s programmes such as microgravity, human spaceflight and lunar, Mars and Mercury explorations, whilst reflecting on the new politics of space exploration and the impact of its technological application on our consciousness.

Supported by funding from Arts Council England, The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Fundação EDP, Instituto Cultural de Macau, Tapestry and Kay Mounting.

BILSTON’S HAPPY HOUSING: OTTO NEURATH’S VISION FOR POST-WAR MODERN LIVINGBILSTON GALLERY7 MARCH – 2 MAY 2015

In the mid-1940s eminent Viennese sociologist and urban planner Otto Neurath set out an ambitious plan for creating happiness in Bilston. His vision was to create modern homes based on state-of-the-art social housing of 1920s Red Vienna. The end result was Stowlawn Estate. This exhibition presents Neurath’s ideas, examples of his famous Isotypes (forerunners of today’s infographics), and memories of people who have lived on Stowlawn Estate over the past 60 years. There will also be furniture, textiles, ceramics and domestic items reflecting the ‘new look’ style of the mid-century era.

POP IN SPACE: WE CHOOSE TO GO TO THE MOONART GALLERY21 FEBRUARY – 18 JULY 2015

Pop in Space explores artists’ responses to the Space Race during the Cold War. Artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Gerald Laing, David Lamelas and Kiki Kogelnik, among others, employed space imagery to reflect the glamour and power of infinite exploration and introduced a striking space age imagery during the 1950s and 60s. Half a century later, this exhibition explores tensions from the technological and ideological rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union, both focused on attaining a first in space exploration.

GEORGIAN ENAMELS – A NEW NARRATIVEBANTOCK HOUSE14 MAY – 9 AUGUST 2015

In the 1800s locally-made enamel boxes were very desirable and popular among polite Georgian society. They were used to hold snuff which was taken by both men and women; for patches used as decoration and to cover pock marks; for perfume to hide unpleasant smells and to carry sweet tasting bonbons to freshen the breath.

The exhibition will include new and imagined stories and new enamels created by local craftsman John Grayson, which are inspired by popular culture both from the eighteenth century and present day.

THE CURRENT SITUATIONART GALLERY1 APRIL – 27 JUNE 2015

The desire to create art which is accessible and playful, sits at the heart of Yara El-Sherbini’s practice. For the past 10 years, her artworks have used the recognisable formats of jokes, games and game shows, as well as everyday objects such as toilet locks and books to allow people to relate and engage with contemporary art and provoke important socio-political questions.

The Current Situation brings together a selection of five artworks that are diverse in their presentation but connected by a common theme: an exploration of the here and now. Yara El-Sherbini is represented by La Caja Blanca Gallery, Spain, and is an Artsadmin Associate Artist.
