Developing Digital Inventory(Water and Sanitary Sewer – Round One)

• Water and Sanitary Sewer utility mapping began 1997

• Used BaySys/GeoIT/KEMA software and data modeling expertise

• First attempt to determine necessary features in data model

• Features collected with GPS

Developing Digital Inventory(Storm Sewer Utility)

• Storm Sewer mapping started in 2001• Moved away from custom programming• Used standard ESRI software with

BaySys/GeoIT/KEMA modeling expertise• Out of the box ESRI, Microsoft Access, and

Visio (UML)• Features collected with GPS or imported from

existing AutoCAD or ESRI coverages

Developing Digital Inventory(Water and Sanitary Sewer – Round Two)

• 2002 - Convert UNIX applications to Windows• Bring all utility editing to one platform with

consistent attribute schemes• Good chance to remove unused attributes

and features• Features converted from ArcInfo Coverage

format to personal Geodatabases

Maintenance?

But, I’m not done mapping!

Maintain the Digital Inventory

• Have an update strategy in place before data conversion begins– What type of changes can occur?– How will GIS editor be notified of changes?– How often will digital inventory be updated?– How many edits are anticipated?– “Map” out the workflow to cover all possibilities

Maintain the Digital Inventory

• Water Utility:– tracking hydrant flushing, freeze-ups, breaks, leaks

• Sanitary sewer:– tracking: rodding, jetting, flushing, video surveys

• Storm Utility:– tracking cleaning activities

System Benefits – Future Plans

Page 29: Wausau Department of Public Works - GIS Division Application of GIS Technology to Municipal Utility Operations Developing a Digital Inventory for Water,

Wausau Department of Public Works - GIS Division

Benefits• Complete digital inventory with ability to query, display

and create maps at any scale• Accurate positional accuracy (not relative accuracy

anymore)• Ability to quickly share digital information with

developers, and engineers for site design• Automated map book process

– Blue-print machine removed, reduced staff time

• Increased available office space (no more map cases)• Faster response time to satisfy requests for

information

Page 30: Wausau Department of Public Works - GIS Division Application of GIS Technology to Municipal Utility Operations Developing a Digital Inventory for Water,

Wausau Department of Public Works - GIS Division

Future Plans• Move to multi-user environment/database

– “SDE in 2003”– To give water/sewer utility staff ability to edit

maintenance reports/data

• New GPS and base (Survey Grade RTK)• Develop an ArcIMS Utility Viewer• Storm Utility: Finish?!?!?!?

– East side completed. Working westward.– Slow process due to many new features never

mapped before (inlets and laterals)

• Field access?
