    BUCKWHEATS GALORE

I have been up and down Sherwin Grade on Highway 395 in Mono County a number of timesbu t only twice have I botanized along th e way: on August 7, 1938, and August 13 , 1981.Each time I traveled what i s now "old Sherwin Grade" and each time I was impressed withmany kinds of Eriogonum that grow along tha t route between 4800 f t . elevation j u s tbelow Paradise Camp and 7000 f t . elevat ion a t L i t t l e Round Valley j u s t beyond TomsPlace. In a l l , there are 16 species and var ie t ies ; - - I wonder i f tha t many kinds can befound anywhere else in as l imited an area in th e Owens Valley region. This i s the order

in which they occur as one goes up th e grade:

    On arid f l a t s j u s t below Paradise Camp, 4800-5000 f t . : E. Bai legi var. divariaatum,braahganthum, i n f l a tum, maaulatum, nidularium.

On rocky f l a t s and slopes and on loose s o i l of road banks; north and south of oldSherwin Summit, 6000-6500 f t . : E. Bai leyi var. Bai l eg i , deflexum var. deflexum,Hermannii var. humil ius , Kearnegi var. monoense, nudum var. Westoni i , umbellatum vars .chlorothamnus and nevadense.

    Between ol d Sherwin Summit and L i t t l e Round Valley, 6700-7000 f t . : E. elatum,esmeraldense, miarotheaum vars . ambiguum and lax i f lorum. E. Cernuum and E. spergulinumvar.Reddingianum can be expected to occur here to o bu t they were not detected on ei therdate. They have been collected on Rock Creek a t about 8500 f t .
