Students are VITAL to the Watt Watchers program at your school. It is their program, they do the daily work. Watt Watchers often refers to the students as the Energy Manager’s eyes and ears on each campus. They are actively looking for energy being wasted and working hard at stopping the waste and educating the building occupants about how to reduce the amount of energy wasted on their campus.

Watt Watchers of Texas sounds like an easy program to start. Order the kit, pick some kids, and send them out to patrol. But even the easiest of plans need a little bit of encouragement and reworking the first time you do them. That is why we have created the Rookie Watt Watcher Program. We are here to help with the nervousness about when to patrol, having students in the halls, and wondering whether you are making a difference in your school. We created our rookies program to provide a support network to answer your student Energy Patrol questions.
In June of 2007 Watt Watchers of Texas launched the Rookie Watt Watcher program. We knew that if you could get through your first year successfully you would continue using Watt Watchers in your class-room. You would also be saving your school lots of money and saving the earth lots of energy in the pro-cess. Just like your first year in the classroom, during your first year in the Watt Watcher program you need a little bit more encouragement, more instruction, and sometimes, more incentives.
Five hundred twenty six people signed up for Watt Watchers of Texas this year through conferences, classes, our website, word of mouth and through district-wide enrollments. These people were auto-matically enrolled in the rookie program. We sent them detailed messages each month explaining one part of the energy patrol in detail. We sent them encouraging

eIa: Wind power provided the Majority of added Capacity in 2007For the first time, renewable energy sources other than conventional hydropower provided the majority of new U.S. electric generating capacity in 2007, according to DOE’s Energy Information Administration (EIA). Specifically, wind power was the star in 2007, providing 5,186 megawatts of new generating capacity, compared to an overall net gain in summer capacity of 8,673 megawatts. Natural gas-fired generation came in second place, accounting for 4,582 megawatts of new generating capacity, but coal-fired capacity actually decreased. Two new coal plants added 1,354 megawatts of new capacity, but retirements and capacity reductions at existing plants caused coal-fired generating capacity to drop by 217 megawatts. Meanwhile, biomass power sources added more than 700 megawatts of generating capacity, and solar electric technologies added an estimated 91 megawatts of capacity.

Transit use up, driving downThe number of miles traveled by vehicles in the United States fell by 3.6% in 2008, whi le the number of t r ips taken on public transportation increased by 4.0%, according to statistics gathered by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). The DOT estimated that U.S. residents traveled 2.922 trillion miles in 2008, down from 3.030 trillion miles in 2007, a reduction of nearly 108 billion miles. In fact, U.S. driving has been declining for 14 months, for a total vehicle travel reduction of 115 billion miles. The DOT found the greatest decrease in rural driving, which was down by 4.2%, suggesting that people are simply driving less in rural areas. Meanwhile, urban driving decreased by 3.2%.

the tRaNsMissioN LiNeThe world needs to reduce its carbon output by 80 percent by 2050 if it is to avoid the worst effects of climate change. Banning inefficient lighting is a good first step but it is not enough on its own to stop human induced climate change in its tracks.

India’s light bulb phase out: setting a smart exampleHow many light bulbs can 1 billion people change? About 400 million wasteful incandescent bulbs, in India’s case. India has put in place a market mechanism that will phase out incandescent bulbs, making way for a cleaner energy future. Greenpeace has been campaigning for the phase-out of incandescent bulbs in several countries, and, this decision puts India in the company of other countries leading on light bulbs legislation.
India will be cutting the same amount of emissions that would come from four coal-fired power plants. If the whole world followed India’s lead, eliminating wasted electricity from lighting, the cumulative effect would be equivalent to shutting down around 220 coal-fired power plants. India has used a mechanism set up under the Kyoto protocol to bring down the cost of compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) for ordinary people. The more efficient bulbs were previously 80 - 100 rupees and will now be only 15 rupees, the same price as an incandescent bulb.

Google this: how Much energy do You use?Google wants you to know all this and more: How much does it cost to leave your TV on all day? What about turning your air conditioning 1 degree cooler? Which uses more power every month — your fridge or your dishwasher? Is your household more or less energy efficient than similar homes in your neighborhood?
They are working on a tool called Google PowerMeter which will show consumers their electricity consumption in near real-time in a secure iGoogle Gadget. PowerMeter will offer more useful and actionable feedback than complicated monthly paper bills that provide little detail on consumption or how to save energy. It figures to be part of the new “smart grid” developing across the nation.

u.S. Wind power Capacity Vaults to Top Spot due to rapid GrowthThe U.S. wind energy industry shattered all previous records in 2008, installing 8,358 megawatts (MW) of new generating capacity and placing the United States above all other nations in terms of installed wind power capacity. U.S. wind capacity increased by 50%, bringing it to a total of 25,170 MW, according to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). That’s enough to push the United States above Germany, the previous leader for installed wind power capacity. According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Germany had 22,247 MW of wind capacity at the start of the year, but added only 1,665 MW in 2008, bringing it to 23,903 MW, more than 2,000 MW short of the new U.S. total. Overall, global wind power capacity increased by 28.8% in 2008, with more than 27,000 MW of new generating capacity, increasing the global wind power capacity to 120,791 MW, according to the GWEC.

In the last two years, over 10 countries have committed to banning the bulb with another half a dozen countries planning to do the same or using initiatives to effectively consign the old incandescent bulb to the dustbin of history.

ceLebRate DistRict successWhat do you have to celebrate? A LOT! You have started a District Wide program to reduce the energy
waste at your campuses by getting teachers and students involved. That alone is reason to celebrate. But you have even more than that. You have created awareness of energy use – that not only saves energy in your schools but it saves energy in the homes of all the students, teachers and staff in your district.
While everyone else in the world is worried about how we are going to make more energy, you already have the answer – don’t make more, use less by being efficient with the energy we have! Energy efficiency is the answer to our energy crisis.

Many of our district wide Watt Watchers programs are hosting a “rally” or award ceremony to celebrate what they have accomplished this year. Get
everyone involved and make a big deal of it! Carrollton Farmer’s Branch ISD has held a Green Teams Rally for several years now and they get the mascots, cheerleaders, band and anyone else able to celebrate involved. They give
out awards for top performing schools and recognize each and every student and teacher involved in the program, it is a LOT of fun! Do you have a ceremony
in your district? If you do, let us know. We want to help you celebrate!
Watt Watchers is busy collecting information and putting together
press releases for each of the districts that participates in district wide Watt Watchers. We want each district to share their success and get a pat on the back from your community for educating students, teachers and other school staff about how important it is to reduce the
amount of energy wasted on campus. If you would like us to include information about dollars saved by your student energy patrols, please send that information to us and we will be sure to include it!
All district wide Watt Watchers programs should have received a Watt Watchers flag. This large flag can be flown at each school during the month of May to show that they participated in the program and were vital to saving energy in your school district this year. No matter what you do, big or small, celebrate the success of your program!

Ever wondered what those winning schools have in common? What makes them have a successful Watt Watcher program when yours has had bumps and detours along the way? We looked at the three schools that have won Rookie of the Year and found the following similarities among their programs. Perhaps this is the recipe for a successful energy-saving, money-saving Watt Watcher student patrol.
All had support from their school district energy manager
All had support from the campus principal
All conducted a stealth patrol before starting their patrols
All patrolled regularly throughout the school year
All kept records and analyzed the data to make their programs better
All gave out awards to teachers to encourage participation
All empowered the students to own their program
All provided campus wide information about energy savings
All had fun
And oddly enough- each Rookie of the Year was from a school in the Dallas Fort Worth metro area. So, get to work Texas. Next year we should have rookies from every corner of the state.

Your Watt Watchers of Texas kit contains about $25 worth of materials. The notebooks, lanyards, name tags, pencils, sample tickets, forms and manual are all essential parts of a successful program. The idea behind providing each school with a complete kit is to make it easy to get started. A new Watt Watchers sponsor can open up the kit and start the program in a matter of minutes.
That works great for your first year as a Watt Watchers sponsor but what do you do next year and the year after that? Watt Watchers cannot send each sponsor a new kit every year. That would defeat our overall mission for every school to be a Watt Watchers school! Watt Watchers is committed to supporting our current schools because we want you to stay active and expand on your energy saving activities. So the simple answer is – we will supply as many kits to everyone needing materials as we possibly can within our budget.
Our ability to provide kits is limited but our goal is to keep as many current and future schools active in Watt Watchers as possible. Please tell us what you need and we will do our best to complete your request. We hope you will help us reach more schools by preserving your kit.
As a sponsor you have some options. Some of the materials in the kit are consumable and will have to be replaced by your school as they are used. Examples of these are reminder tickets/thank you notes and forms. Other materials are meant to be permanent parts of your kit. Examples of these are notebooks, lanyards and name badge holders. Other items in your kit fall between those extremes. Examples of these are pencils and name tags.
Watt Watchers cannot supply your program with the consumable supplies that are needed to run your program on a daily basis. We do provide you with access to these forms via our website www.wattwatchers.org and CD-Rom. The permanent parts of your kit are also the most expensive parts and these are the items important to preserve. If your notebooks or lanyards get damaged or misplaced, please let us know so that we can replace them.
We can easily supply your program with new pencils and name tags. We encourage you to give the pencils and paper name tags to participating students along with a certificate of achievement. Please contact Watt Watchers with your supply request and we will ship them to you as soon as possible.
If you move to a new school we ask that you leave your Watt Watchers kit behind with a new sponsor to fill your shoes and then contact us to enroll at your new school. We will be glad to send you a new kit. During your transition, please help us keep your records straight. We want to accurately account for each Watt Watchers school. Good records also allow us to communicate with you so that you will always be aware of the most up-to-date Watt Watchers materials.

Watt Watchers offers online workshops to assist you with your Watt Watchers program whether you are a rookie Watt Watcher or a veteran! You simply login on your computer to the website address provided and dial in on your telephone to participate in the audio version of the workshop. To register for the workshop, email [email protected] and we will send you the login information for the online workshop. The workshops are a convenient way for you to get information from the comfort of your own classroom.

stories from the trenches submitted by teachers who have been there and done that. And, we provided them with little incentives for their patrol students, their school and themselves if they participated in the milestones that make a successful program.
Lots of teachers did participate in the rookie program, by sending us reports of how their student patrols were going and asking questions about situations that occurred. Just like your second year as a Watt Watcher sponsor will be better than your first, our second year with the rookie program also was better. We had more teachers participate and more teachers “toot their own horn,” so to say. This led us to choose two teachers (one who began at the beginning of the school year and one who just started after the New Year) whom we felt had gone above and beyond during this first year of patrolling. We are calling these teachers our Rookies of the Year.

... Laurie Garippa of LaRue Miller Elementary in Midlothian ISD and Michael Koenig of
Degan Elementary in Lewisville ISDLaurie found Watt Watchers on the internet at the beginning of her first year in a brand new green campus. Her principal actually knew about the program and asked if she would coordinate for her campus. Laurie’s first thought after reading through the Watt Watcher program description was, “Oh, boy, the teachers may not like me telling them to turn off their lights.” She knew she needed to make this a fun project to get the teachers and students on board.
After their Stealth Patrol she began getting emails from the teachers trying to explain away their bad energy behavior. Over time the teachers and students did come on board. Each month at the staff meeting Laurie reports on energy usage and savings. She took our Zero Hero award idea and gave it a LaRue Miller twist. “I made Say Watt!?! awards and distributed them to the teachers and staff who had received no X’s for the preceding month. Before I hand them out, that person must vigorously shout out “Say What!?!”.”
These awards became so coveted at her school that one was even held for ransom.
Rookie of the yeaR...La Rue Elementary also has a “We Know How to Watch our Watts!” wall. Each month a selected class decorates a large paper light bulb with energy saving tips and pictures. When asked about her first year as a Watt Watcher sponsor, Laurie answered,” I must say that our first year of Watt Watchers has been a learning experience. Some months we have energy savings, but other months we use a bit more electricity than we should. But I firmly believe that if not for this program, we would be using significantly more energy than we do now.” LaRue Miller principal Beth VanAmburgh said, “This has been a positive, engaging, meaningful experience for all of us. Everyone on our campus has worked as a complete team to save our district dollars and cents.” Parents in this district are even commenting to the faculty that they are saving energy and money at home because of the information the kids are learning at school.

to Watch Watts.Our second Rookie of the Year comes from Degan Elementary school in Lewisville ISD. Michael Koenig is the computer technology teacher for his campus. He found Watt Watchers of Texas at the CAST conference in Fort Worth last November. Within six weeks of receiving his information, Michael had chosen his patrol teams and started a Stealth Patrol. After Christmas break the students briefed the campus and began giving tickets. Mr. Koenig works with fourth and fifth grade students as his patrollers. He chose 40 students that did not have a place to shine. These students were not labeled as GT or special needs, they did not shine in extra curricular activities nor were they constantly in trouble. These were the kids that often get overlooked, and now they had a purpose. Principal Brenda Rogers told us that the Degan Elementary School parents are proud of the Watt Watcher program. They know their children can’t miss a day because they are on the Watt Watcher crew. These outgoing patrollers are currently training the team coming up behind them. I bet next year’s students will have even more success.
This is not the first year Degan has had a Watt Watcher program. “A few years ago our Watt Watcher program under a different sponsor did not take hold. Michael has changed that. He has made this fun and relevant to the kids. He has been instrumental in our Energy Savings,” said Principal Rogers. In fact, Mr. Koenig sent us his records (as we encourage our rookies to do). According to Michael, “Since we started our patrols we have had a 4% decrease in the number of lights being left on. “ That is a great success for only a few months of work.
Congratulations, Michael Koenig, on creating an energy savings program that will not only save money and energy at your school, but will also create energy efficient students and perhaps a future Rookie of the Year.

WhaT Can You do?
reduce the amount of packaging
Packaging serves many purposes. Its primary purpose is to protect and contain a product. It also can prevent tampering, provide information, and preserve hygienic integrity and freshness. Some packaging, however, is designed largely to enhance a product’s attractiveness or prominence on the store shelf. Since packaging materials account for a large volume of the trash we generate, they provide a good opportunity for reducing waste. In addition, keep in mind that as the amount of product in a container increases, the packaging waste per serving or use usually decreases. C o n S I d e r r e u S a B L e p r o d u C T S Many products are designed to be used more than once. Reusable products and containers often result in less waste. This helps reduce the cost of managing solid waste and often conserves materials and resources. (Remember, reusable containers for food must be carefully cleaned to ensure proper hygiene.)
• A sturdy mug or cup can be washed and used time and again. Many people bring their own mugs to work, meetings, and conferences.
• Sturdy and washable utensils and tableware can be used at home and for picnics, outdoor parties, and potlucks.
• See if “recharged” cartridges for laser printers, copiers, and fax machines are available. They not only reduce waste, but also typically save money.
• Cloth napkins, sponges, or dishcloths can be used around the house. These can be washed over and over again.
• When possible, use rechargeable batteries to help reduce garbage and keep toxic metals found in some batteries out of the waste stream. Another alternative is to look for batteries with reduced toxic metals.
• When using single-use items, remember to take only

reuSe BaGS, ConTaInerS, and oTher ITeMS Many everyday items can have more than one use. Before discarding bags, containers, and other items, consider if it
is hygienic and practical to reuse them. Reusing products extends their lives, keeping them out of the solid waste stream longer. Adopt the ideas that work for you, add some of your own, and then challenge others in your school, office, and community to try these ideas and to come up with others. •Reuse paper and plastic bags and twist ties. If it’s
practical, keep a supply of bags on hand to use on the next shopping trip, or take a string, mesh, or canvas tote bag to the store. When a reusable bag is not on hand
and only one or two items are being purchased, consider whether you need a bag at all. • Reuse scrap paper and envelopes.
Use both sides of a piece of paper for writing notes before recycling it. Save and reuse gift boxes, ribbons,
and larger pieces of wrapping and tissue paper. Save packaging,
colored paper, egg cartons, and other items for reuse or for arts and
crafts projects at day-care facilities, schools, youth facilities, and senior citizen
centers. Find other uses or homes for old draperies, bedding, clothing, towels, and
cotton diapers. Then cut up what’s left for use as patchwork, rags, doll clothes, rag rugs, or other projects.
ChooSe reCYCLaBLe produCTS and ConTaInerS and reCYCLe TheM When you’ve done all you can to avoid waste, recycle. Producing goods from recycled
materials typically consumes less energy and conserves raw materials. Yet, our landfills are packed with many packages and products that can be recycled.
• Consider products made of materials that are collected for recycling locally; in many commu-
nities, this includes glass, aluminum, steel, some paper and cardboard, and certain plastics. Check with appropriate community officials, volunteer groups, or recycling businesses to determine what materials are collected for recycling. If a system is not in place to return a certain type of material, that material is not easily “recyclable.”
• Participate in community recycling drives, curbside programs, and drop-off collections. Call community of-ficials, the local recycling center, or a nearby recycling business to find out if and how materials should be separated. For example, some communities require that glossy inserts be segregated from newspaper, and that different types of cans be separated. A magnet can be used to distinguish steel or bimetal cans from aluminum cans (a magnet does not stick to aluminum). Also, investigate curbside pickup schedules, determine what materials are accepted, locate drop-off sites, and find out when these sites are open.
• If a recycling program does not exist in your community, participate in establishing one. Call local salvage opera-tors to see if they will accept or pick up materials for recycling. Work with community officials to determine the most cost-effective recycling options for your area.

The Three r’s Treasure HuntGrade Level: 3-8
objective: Students will learn the difference between the words reduce, reuse, and recycle and identify items in the classroom that fit these three definitions.
Time: 15 minutes for Activity 1, 45 minutes for Activity 2, 30 minutes for Activity 3.
Materials: Local recycling center rules and regulations, items that can be recycled, reused or reduced.
Vocabulary: reduce, reuse, recycle, landfill
Background Information:
The three R’s have been in the news a lot lately. Everyone seems to be talking about reduce, re-use and recycle. These three words are often misused in everyday conversation, television shows, even public service announcements. But through this lesson the students will learn the slight differences between the three and find some things in the classroom that represent each.

Setting the Stage:
Write the three words on the board or overhead. On a sheet of paper have each student write what they think t h e definition would be for each word. Have a few students read the i r de f in i t ions and discuss them to bring the class to a consensus definit ion. Write these definitions on the board next to the words and have the students copy these new definitions under their initial definition.
activity 1: Treasure hunt
Now that the students know the difference between the words, let’s see if they can spot an item in the room that fits that category. Divide a sheet of paper into three parts and label the top of each row with one of the three words -- reduce, reuse, and recycle. Now, send the kids on a scavenger hunt around the room to find items that will fit in each category. You may want to supplement your classroom with items that are easier to identify
or with items that could spark discussions (a dry cleaning bag, an ink cartridge, or a Styrofoam cup, for instance).
After about five minutes they should have several options listed for each heading. Have them sit down in groups of three to discuss their findings. The students may have placed items in different columns and that is OK. (A coffee canister can be reused to hold pencils, or recycled for aluminum, or you can purchase one large can rather than three small cans to reduce waste.) It will spark discussions. If needed they can write their reasoning after their items. Have the students come to a consensus on their list so all three have mostly the same items under the same headings, though you should expect some variations.
activity 2: do Your research
Now have each student in the group of three choose to represent one of the headings. Place all the students who choose recycle together, all the students who choose reduce together, and so on. Have each group discuss the items under their headings. Give each group a copy of your local recycling center rules and regulations and other information on programs in your area, such as cell phone exchange, e-recycling, ink cartridge refill, teacher supply collection (a central location for donating things that can be used for craft projects). The groups should discuss the items on their lists and be sure your community can help them with their objective. Each group will create a presentation on their topic. This presentation should include the definition of the word, items they found in the classroom, other items they thought of that could be added to the list, ease of achieving their goals, and challenges they might encounter in the community.
activity 3: The Final product
Each group should present their information using visuals and answer questions from the audience.

That’s right – you are the one that remembered to turn out the light in your room, or you are the one that allowed a Watt Watchers Patrol to teach you a little more about how to save energy at school. You saved a lot of energy, prevented pollution from getting into our atmosphere and saved your school district lots of money by simply changing your energy habits and becoming more energy efficient.
We hope that your new habits are going home with you – you are turning off the lights when you leave a room, turning off the TV when you are not watching it, and remembering to unplug your cell phone charger when you are not charging it! All these things save energy and money at your home and at your school!
Perhaps you will be the recipient of a Zero Hero award. This award is given to the teacher(s)
that remembered more than any other to turn it off when not in use – lights, computers, classroom equipment and anything else the Watt Watchers at your school looked for on their patrols. You are a HERO.

Energy Efficiency is the Answer! This is true when the question is – What is the best way to save money? or What is the best way to prevent pollution? or What should be our first priority? Amory Lovins termed it “Negawatts” to properly characterize it but often Energy Efficiency is overlooked as an energy source since it is the energy you don’t use. But it is a real, renewable source of energy. It prevents pollution, it is cheaper than any other source, it can be applied immediately without construction delays, and it is one of our most abundant energy supplies. Experts estimate that we can cut 20% of world energy demand by 2020 through energy efficiency. The U.S. could cut 75% of electricity and half of oil use using the best techniques. Energy efficiency IS the answer!
