WATERTOWN CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE, JUNE 28TH, 2020
PASTORAL
Dear parishioners of the Watertown Catholic Collaborative,
I am Linh Chu, a seminarian of the diocese of Hanoi, Vietnam. It is such a great privilege for me to share a few words with you in the Collaborative bulletin.
Fr. Matthew jokingly asked me “Linh, I want you to write about Trinitarian theology for our parishioners.” Well, this is not an easy topic and I do not want to give “a lecture” on the doctrine of the Trinity to challenge your brain but I decided to take the challenge and share some of my stories that I had in Vietnam regarding trying to teach the Trinity.
We Christians believe in One God, three Persons. This mystery is called the Trinity. This is central to all Catholic beliefs. We daily profess our faith in the Trinity through making the sign of the cross. This is a wonderful way to show our faith in God, the Trinity. However, our understanding of the Trinity is never easy under our human way and experience.
I still remember an experience when I was assigned to a distant and remote parish in Vietnam. One day when I was teaching kids about the catechism of the Trinity before the Mass. First, I raised a finger and asked them: “Is God the Father?” They answered: “Yes!” I raised another finger with the holding of my point finger and asked them the second time: “Is God the Son?” They all, without hesitation, replied loudly: “Yes!” I continued the third time with a third finger: “Is God the Holy Spirit?” The same answer “Yes” was given. Finally, I held up my three fingers together, asking them in a loud voice: “How many Gods?” They all were so excited, looking at my three fingers and confidently cried out in a loud voice: “Three Gods!” After their answer, the whole Church was completely quiet. No one made any noise. The adults were astounded without uttering a word. A few seconds later, the kids recognized the strange silence due to their answer in the Church. They began to correct themselves: “No! No! Only one God!” Then, the adults burst out laughing.
Another story is when I was teaching the doctrine of the Trinity for second and third graders. One of the boys asked me: “Mr. Linh, was Jesus sent to school?” I questioned: “Why do you ask this?” He continued: “because I am taught in the school that 1+1+1 equals 3, so one God the Father + one God the Son + one God the Holy Spirit, must be three Gods. But the Church teaches only one God. What’s wrong?” Then, I used simple language to explain to him about the Trinity as three Divine Persons, but only one God.
We can be easily misunderstand the Trinity if we look at this mystery simply in a human way. It is impossible for us to use our finite human mind to understand God. God is beyond our measure and our human mind.
However, the Church received Divine revelation from God and teaches infallibly the truth about the Trinity that there is one God in three persons. This truth is revealed to us by Jesus who is both God and man. The doctrine of the Trinity is encapsulated in Matthew’s Gospel 28:19, where Jesus instructs the apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This is our faith. We only need to remember one thing; if we humble and entrust ourselves to the Trinity, God will grant us his bounteous blessings.
May the one God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit bless you always!

Maximum safely allowed per Mass is 100. All who plan to attend Mass in Watertown MUST sign up prior to showing up at the Church. No exceptions will be made at the door. An e-mail blast will be sent out to all registered parishioners using a program called SignUp Genius. The preferred method to sign up is through this online platform. When you arrive, volunteers will be at the center doors signing each attendee in by name. There will also be hand sanitizer at the entrance that we ask everyone to use before entering the Church. Please bring your own personal hand sanitizer as well if you have it. Have you ever noticed that many psalms begin with a complaint? Then a prayer usually follows, and it all ends with joy and praise. If you read this week’s psalm in its completeness in the bible, it follows exactly the opposite pattern. We think, when we are in trouble, that we get ease by complaining; but more so, we get joy by praising. In the additional verses we find the things that will be the topic of praise and thanksgiving for us in the worst of times, whether upon a personal or a public account. The verses included here this week show us that God is always loving and reliable. He does not change in His care and commitments. He is the same forever. Indeed, “forever” is one of the frequently repeated words in this
psalm. Regardless of how we may feel during our present crisis, God remains the same. God is always absolutely reliable, trustworthy, and unchanging. These truths about God are not only eternal, but they are also displayed in history. The covenant, like the character of God, is forever and to all generations. So the psalm has opened with its great themes: the steadfast love and faithfulness of God and His covenant with David. The psalmist is also laying the foundation for his later complaint that God seems not to have kept His promises. As this psalm tries to teach us, may we learn to turn our complaints into thanksgivings.
This Week’s Psalm Reflection
The promises of the LORD I will sing Forever, through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness. For you have said, "My kindness is established forever;" in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.
Blessed the people who know the joyful shout; in the light of your countenance, O LORD, they walk. At your name they rejoice all the day, and through your justice they are exalted.
You are the splendor of their strength, and by your favor our horn is exalted. For to the LORD belongs our shield, and the Holy One of Israel, our king.
