Maasvlakte Olie Terminal (MOT) located on the “Maasvlakte”, is presently with 4.3

million m3 (27 million bbl.) the largest crude oil terminal in the world.

MOT has awarded an EPC contract to Verwater for 3 additional floating roof tanks with a volume of 120,000 m3 (700,000 bbl.)each, including the tank foundations, roads and bund walls, the 42” interconnecting piping, electrical power supply, instrumentation and in-/external painting.

The underground GRE (glassfibre reinforced epoxy) fire lines and above ground foam system are also part of this contract. The engineering is based on NEN 14015 and PGS-29. The tanks, 84 m'diameter and 22 m' high are nearly finished and water testing is well under way. In one of the tanks the internal coating is in progress. The 42” piping prefabrication is finished and field construction for 50% ready. So far the project has an excellent safety record and is one month ahead of schedule. Also the complete basic engineering was done by the engineers of Verwater in good guidance by the technical department of MOT.

In Oslo at a Shell-depot Verwater jacked up a tank under special conditions. The bitumen tank with a diameter

of 15.5 m’ and a height of 25(!) m’ showed a tilt of the foundation and it was chosen to install a piled concrete slab.

Works had to be executed out of the asphalting season, thus during the winter period. As temperatures easily lower till minus 15°C. special precautions had to be taken for the jacking system.

The tank was jacked till a height of 2,500 mm after which a piling machine will install piles underneath. On top of the piles a concrete slab will be installed on which the tank will be lowered. This shall be finished before the summer and road-paving season. ■

Freezing job in norway

The revamp activities this month were entirely

focused on the intake pipeline NATO. Scheduled was to start the connection activities at 12.00 hrs on December 12th. Because of some non foreseen circumstances by Nato the start was postponed to 22.00 hrs.Bad weather, poor conditions of the terrain and the short duration of the project made it a risk full operation. But due to the dedication and professionalism of Verwater and his sub-contractors the intake of 72 hours succeeded.

In January the connection from NATO intake to the pump station and storage tank was installed. ATPC started with production on the 22nd of January 2011. ■

Revamp AtPC Antwerp

Retrofit AtPC AntwerpThe retrofit project includes

the modification and renewal of 22 tanks. Ten tanks are completed and Verwater started finalising the as built documentation. The remaining tanks are at this moment being repaired.January 2011 we installed

another new dome at tank 608 and finished activities as water and sprinkler testing, the tank is now in production. On the other tanks we started with foundations and bottom works and renewal of wind girders. ■

Jacking a helideck in singaporeVerwater Singapore was approached in June last year by a client not

directly related to storage tanks. On one of the island’s shipyards there was the need to jack up a helicopter landing deck of an oil-platform, about 2.5 meters to a new level. The deck with a size of 26 x 26 meters and a weight of appr. 75 tonnes was placed on 16 high-rise jacking points. In a session of 20 hours and in steps of 30 mm the deck was carefully lifted till the required new height. ■

Since 2006 Verwater has been carrying out shutdown works

at Shin-Etsu Rotterdam, at the 100 and 200 units. Besides our basic scope of work, we also execute various projects during these stops. The preparation for the works is planned by Verwater Mechanical, with their project team on-site.

The works include: disassembling / assembling of equipment, vessels, towers, airfan banks, piping, etc.During the last stop, Jan Franken (Project Manager) and his team, worked with 40 people, staff, welders and fitters. These stops are executed during a period of 4 weeks. ■

Verwater is contracted by VOPAK Europoort to build 4 x 40,000 M3

storage tanks including civil works, aluminium domes and sheet piling. Last year Verwater started with the civil works on this project and now, February 2011 we are in the phase of completing the works. All tanks have been water tested, aluminium domes are build and will be placed in position. The internal piping is under construction and the finishing of the tank pit is in full swing.

By the end of March 2011 all tanks will be handed over to VOPAK for commissioning. Beginning April 2011, after the tanks are in production, Verwater will start the insulation works with PUF coating (Polyurethane Foam) ■

Welcome back in Port Dickson!

As announced in the previous edition of Waterdrops we established in Malaysia the Verwater-KNM joint venture in 2010. In June we received the contract from the ExxonMobil refinery in

Port Dickson for tank bottom repair works in combination with our tank jacking system. The end of last year we jacked the tank, with a diameter of 52.43 m’, till a level of 600 mm.

Meanwhile we also received the order for Shell Port Dickson to use the tank jacking system for construction of tanks, to build 4 new tanks during 2011. It's good to be back in this historical place! ■

High precission job 3D pipingscan and welds up to 11 hours each.

In the beginning of 2010 we had an exciting job for Verwater at the Exxon Refinery in Rotterdam. We had to replace 2

pieces of 12" mixing points for high pressure. Both prefabricated mixing points had to be placed into the piping structure, so exact measuring was critical to decrease the fieldwelds to a minimum.

The materials to be used were special. The first was P11 (CS), in a 1" wall thickness schedule size, which required preheating and stress relief after welding. The second mixing point was an upgrade from P22 material up to SS-347H. This schedule sizes where up to 1.3/8" including a full penetrated branch connection of 1.3/4" thickness. The 347-H branch was also lined with a 4mm Incoloy liner. We had welds from 8 up to 11 hours, and beveling overlenght piping ‘on site’ had to be avoided as much as possible.

We decided to measure both mixing points with a 3D scan in line, while the refinery-unit was still running. With the software we created the models for the prefabrication in our workshop. It resulted in two heavyweight pieces of 3,700 kgs each and we managed to nil failures on the 100%- X-rays.A perfect example of practical approach combined with 3D-software and good teamwork! ■

In continuity of worldwide storage tank jacking for our client Exxon

Mobil (Antwerp, Rotterdam, Singapore, Malaysia), Verwater France received the first contract of tank jacking in the south of France. The jack-up of the double deck floating roof storage tank of 70 m' diameter and 17.5 m' height has been completed in December. ■

Beginning of 2010 the (project-) joint venture Verwater Audex was awarded by Vitol Tank Terminal International (VTTI) for the EPC contract

of 465,000 m³ storage capacity for K1 products. The piling of the tank foundations started in june 2010, 10 reinforced concrete tank foundations with diameters up to 48 meters where finished mid December. The tank erection work has begun as planned and will reach a height of 30 meters once completed. Meanwhile the marine works for the new Jetty run parallel and according to schedule. With this extension the Euro Tank Terminal Rotterdam has a total storage capacity of 1,000,000 m³ (8 million bbl.) Civil contract HPHt project exxonMobil Antwerp

In 2009 Verwater Belgium received the order for

the civil works for the High Pressure Hydrotreater Project. The time-factor played an important role and resulted in a duration of 18 months where we continuously worked with 2 shifts.

The project started with demolition works of the existing infra-structure.Along the quay, foundations, based on micro-piles, were installed for boulders, gang-ways and loading-arms. Most critical part of the project was the installation of a slop-drum at a depth of 4.5 m’.The finishing touch was the levelling of the site with foundation materials and asphalting the total area of 1,000 m². Due to the detailed preparations, the very intensive cooporation of our teams and awareness at the spot, this project was finished in a safe and high quality way. ■

On a temporary tank foundation we pre-fabricated the entire new tank bottom and first shell-course. The existing tank

was equipped with lifting lugs and by means of a 600 tonnes crane the tank was placed next to the pre-fabricated ‘cup’. After cutting loose the old parts the tank was lifted and meanwhile the heating coils were shifted over. Subsequently the top-part was placed on top of the ‘cup’ and welded together.

In between, our civil department refurbished the existing tank foundation inclusive of a liner with a leak-detection system.

Finally we placed back the tank on it’s original spot, giving some spectacular shots and a satisfied client. ■

Spring 2010 Verwater jacked their first tank in the USA, this at a plant of Conoco

Phillips, Louisiana. The tank with a diameter of 56 m' (183’) and 21 internal columns was jacked till a level of 2.7 m' (8’) for foundation repairs and tankbottom repairs. This tank immediately was followed by another tank jacking at the same plant, this time a floating roof tank with a diameter 53 m' (173’). A third tank is being jacked at the Valero St. Charles Refinery, this time a floating roof tank with a diameter of 55 m' (180’). This to install a new concrete ringwall, a secondary containment liner, tankfoundation and new tankbottom.

In all cases extensive FEM-calculations of the tanks were made to ensure safe jacking. Verwater USA opened lot’s of customer-eyes with their safe and solid jacking system. ■
