Water Age

Issue:While exposure protocols are appropriate for typical drinking water system use, they may not be for all.

Examples:

Tab 4: DWA-61-2013-2

• Water storage tanks in rain water catchment systems where the duration maybe weeks or months,

• Plumbing system designs in green buildings which result of overall reduction in water usage,

• Buildings where stagnant periods occur due to non-use (summer vacations), and

• Products on isolated lines with either long or oversized piping resulting low water turnover.

Problem:NSF 61 compliant products are often specified in these applications which may lead to a false sense of security regarding potential leachates.

Suggestion:A statement on limitations or use assumptions could be placed in standard.

Recommended text for Sec 1.4 (Limitations):

Tab 4: DWA-61-2013-2

“Installation of product in applications routinely resulting in static exposure periods beyond 24 hours may require flushing or post treatment of water held therein to maintain potability.”

Although adding the text doesn’t eliminate the potential misapplication or misperception of the standard, it does established limitations that can be articulated where needed.
