Hello,

Last month I said I was going to talk about repeaters, extenders and access

points. The difference between a repeater and an extender is very little as

they both broadcast a signal and both can, if used properly, extend your

WiFi signal. However an access point is quite different in that it doesn't

repeat a signal, it creates a new one.

I received an email from Steve, asking for some advice about how best to

improve the WiFi throughout his house. The problem with some of the

houses in Somerset and Devon is that they have thick walls and the thicker

the wall, the less the signal can travel. I suggested a couple of things to

Steve. He could hard wire some access points around his home which

would create a new network that would allow a connection. The second

was multiple access points, and third a more powerful router. Hard wiring

is complicated because there are factors like walls, electricity wires, pipes

etc. However this is the most reliable way to do it, the main reason being

that wires don’t generally get confused. With a wifi extender or repeater,

the signal that is already there is simply repeated.

During the configuration of these repeaters or extenders you have the

option to repeat or create a new SSID (network name) so you could have

the network called Home-Internet with a code and another called Home-

Internet-EXT with a different code, or just have one network called Home-

Internet with the same code. The name varies from router to router and

can be changed but I don’t recommend doing this unless you are confident.

A few years ago these devices were very hard to setup and get working as

you had to know details about your IP address, DNS servers and various

other things. These days you can connect to the repeater using a mobile

wifi device and follow the instructions that come up. Normally an

inexperienced person, if they have a good device, can have it running within

10 minutes and it’s not the case that the more you pay the better it is as

some of the lower end of the market devices are just as good. You can get

a very good Netgear repeater for less than 20 pounds which isn’t bad for a

more reliable connection in your home!

As usual, if you have any questions, please send an email to me, Andy at

Plan consultation to start Consultation began at the beginning of June on a series of modifications

to the West Somerset Local Plan.

The Plan, which provides the framework for future planning decisions in

the area, is nearing adoption having been subject to public hearing

sessions earlier in the year.

Following a six week consultation on the changes the independently

appointed Planning Inspector, Brian Cook, will issue his report into the

‘soundness’ of the Plan.

If the Inspector finds the plan sound and capable of adoption it is

anticipated that West Somerset Council will formally adopt the Plan in

August or September. The proposed changes can be viewed

at www.westsomersetonline.gov.uk

News from the Exmoor Pony Centre

Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE

The next event at the Centre is our 10th Birthday Bash on Sunday 24th July

from 11am to 3pm with all the usual activities; pony grooming, children’s

crafts, refreshments and riding for those over 4 years old. One of our very

first ponies, Barney, is also 10 years old this year and will be celebrating with

a birthday party on Wednesday 27th July at Dunster Country Fair. Our

charitable aim is to give as many Exmoor ponies as possible a better future

and a fulfilled life. This month we have rehomed many of our ponies to foster

homes and conservation grazing sites throughout the country. The riding

ponies are back on site for the summer and bookings are now being taken for

our popular taster sessions and for trekking on beautiful Exmoor. Please note

that all rides and adoption pony visits need to be booked in advance.

We have a vacancy for an experienced rider to lead treks and help with riding

activities generally and, of course, we can always use more volunteers for

everything from mucking out to office admin. Please get in touch if you

would be interested. We are open to visitors between 10:00 and 4:00 on

Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday throughout the summer.
