2012 ROUTE2012 AmgEn TOUR Of CALIfORnIAby Rick Scott

For the seventh time, the Golden State will provide the backdrop for the world’s best cyclists during the 2012 Amgen Tour

of California. Beginning May 13 in Santa Rosa and finishing in Los Angeles on May 20, an international field consisting of 16 invited pro teams featuring Tour de France contenders, Olympians and World Champions will pedal more than 750-miles during the eight-day stage race.

The cyclists hail from over 20 countries, but U.S. riders and American teams are amongst the favorites and expected to be leading protagonists in the battle for the famous yellow jersey. Returning to defend his 2011 Amgen Tour of California victory, San Diego native Chris Horner races for the U.S.-based RadioShack-Nissan-Trek outfit. The 40-year-old’s much younger teammate, Matthew Busche, is the reigning U.S. National Road Race Champion. Attempting to collect a record fourth Amgen Tour of California title, Levi Leipheimer (Omega Pharma-Quick-Step) will feel at home when the race gets underway from his hometown, Santa Rosa. Colorado-based team Garmin-Barracuda will send Los Angeles-resident David Zabriskie, a previous stage winner and podium finisher at the Amgen Tour of California, into battle accompanied by American frontrunner Tom Danielson, who finished third overall last year. Star-studded BMC Racing is anchored in Santa Rosa and will be led by rapidly rising American star Tejay van Garderen, 2011 winner of the Best Young Rider competition and fifth place general classification finisher, along with veteran

American fan favorite George Hincapie, a multiple stage winner in California.

“The development of the route for the Amgen Tour of California is something we look forward to creating every year,” said Kristin Bachochin, executive director of the race and senior vice president of AEG Sports. “The intricate routes year after year, attract not only the world’s elite cyclists, but cycling fans around the world. No route is ever the same, and we love the fact that we are always challenged and we can be creative with this annual task. We want to thank our Host Cities for working with us on the route and opening up their backyards to our seventh edition of the Amgen Tour of California.”

“The excitement will begin right from the start on the first day in Santa Rosa,” said race director Jim Birrell. “This year’s race will have more accumulative feet of climbing than any of our previous 6 editions.”

Beginning and ending in Santa Rosa, stage 1 (115.9 miles/186.5 km) will provide the riders with a vivid snapshot of what to expect during the week when they face undulating roads, challenging climbs, and speed limit-defying descents amidst golden hills, verdant vineyards, and expansive ocean vistas. Stage 2’s 117.1 miles/188.5 km trek from San Francisco to Santa Cruz County will snake down the California coast and feature Bonny Doon, a precipitous climb that proved to be a stage decider in previous races. San Jose, the only city to have hosted a stage

in each Amgen Tour of California, will host the start of stage 3, a 115.3-mile/185.5 km jaunt to Livermore that will for the first time include the devilish ascent of Mt. Diablo.

The longest at 130.2-miles/209.6 km, stage 4 will unfold in historic Gold Rush territory in the gateway to Yosemite National Park from Sonora to Clovis. Expect an electrifying final sprint between this year’s Tour of Flanders winner Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma-Quick-Step) and Robbie McEwen, the Australian nicknamed as the pocket rocket from the new Orica-GreenEDGE team. Known as “the race of truth,” the time trial (stage 5) is crucial. 2012 will test the riders individually against the clock on a new 18.4-mile/29.7 km course in Bakersfield.

“Friday and Saturday are hard, back-to-back climbing stages on the heels of Thursday’s time trial. This will increase our chances for lead changes on the final weekend,” explained Birrell.

The monster menacing the peloton when they depart from Palmdale on stage 6 (115.7 miles/186.3 km) will be the crushing climb to Big Bear Lake that tops out at over 7,000-feet. Known as the Queen Stage (also the most difficult), riders would be wise to save something for stage 7 (78.3-miles/126 km) that will likely determine the overall winner when they climb 15 switchbacks to the summit of Mt. Baldy.

It is considered prestigious to win the last chapter of a major stage race and stage 8 (44.7 miles/72 km) will provide a Hollywood close-up to the fastest rider of the day as well as crown the overall winner of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California. Starting for the first time on the famed Rodeo Drive in the heart of Beverly Hills, the peloton will ride past numerous iconic Los Angeles landmarks before arriving downtown for finishing circuits that will culminate with the final dash to the line at L.A. LIVE.

2012 Amgen Tour of California Stage 3 finish!

THE bATTLE fOR yELLOW COmEs TO THE gOLdEn sTATEby Rick Scott

“If you build it, they will come.”

While this quote is actually mis-quoted from the Academy Award

nominated film Field of Dreams, it certainly rings true for the Amgen Tour of California. Prior to the race’s 2006 inception, U.S. cycling fans had to jet to Europe to see the world’s best two-wheeled pedalers compete in multi-day endurance tests known as stage races. California-based sports and entertainment presenter AEG Sports imagined bringing Tour de France-style racing to the varied, challenging terrain uniquely found in the Golden State of California.

The inaugural race from Northern to Southern California brought some of the sport’s biggest stars and teams from all over the world and included a number of domestic pro squads. Cycling fans thought they had died and gone to heaven when the riders they had only ever seen on television were pedaling on the same roads they ride. The approachable athletes were just the cherry on top of an already unbelievable fan experience. Californians were intrigued by the

high-speed pelotons that flashed by in a whirl of color and pageantry. Passionate fans lined the roads from start to finish as a national television audience watched Californian Floyd Landis win the grandest bike race in the U.S. Not only did the sun-kissed spectacle provide a platform for pro cycling on American turf, but it also proved to be a glorious showcase for the state, boosting tourism and enhancing economic development while educating Californians on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Californian Levi Leipheimer won a hat trick of Amgen Tour of California’s from 2007–2009. Making the streak a bit more treacherous was the weather—suddenly, the typically warm and inviting blue skies that helped lure Tour de France stage winners (including 7-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong), Olympic medalists, world, and national champions race through California’s coastal enclaves, robust vineyards, verdant fields, and breathtaking hills, were gone. Instead, winter rainstorms, blustery winds, and cold temperatures continuously assaulted the riders throughout the annual February fest.

Despite the weather, race attendance grew exponentially each year and television brought the excitement home to viewers around the world—and why not? The Amgen Tour of California focused a captivating spotlight on the world’s premier bike racers. In daring dashes for glory, the speediest sprinters came to vie for stage wins. Lithe climbers made mountains look like molehills as they ascended like angels amidst crowds as large and fanatical as those on French soil in July. The

time trial specialists also engaged in epic showdowns that did much to decide the overall race winner.

In 2010, organizers moved the race to May in order to ensure better weather, a move that also enabled stages to include more difficult climbing passages through the high mountains of the Sierras and Big Bear that are typically snowcapped earlier in the year. Australian Michael Rogers from the California-based HTC-Columbia team took home the highly coveted yellow jersey as race winner.

Last year, a talented tandem of teammates from the American RadioShack outfit, Californians Chris Horner and Leipheimer, seemed to

ride at a level above the rest. When the two gladiators crossed the finish line nearly hand-in-hand on the first ever mountain top finish high atop Mount Baldy during the race’s penultimate stage, they assured their first- and second-place finishes respectively in the overall. Not only did the veteran Horner get the well-deserved general classification victory, but the Amgen Tour of California also seemed to reach new heights, cementing its place as one of the most prestigious races on the international calendar.

Who will win the Amgen Tour of California this year? Spectators/fans can hardly wait to watch the thrilling action unfold over eight days and more than 750-miles of California roads.

Chris Horner, 2011 Champion

to the rider with the least amount of elapsed

time over the entire race. Depending on each

given based on Sprint Line performances as

well as finishing the stage in the top-15 places.

sporting aggression by being involved in attacks,

chasing down escapes, length of time in a

breakaway, etc.

nissan King of the mountainThis year’s race starts in the magnificent

Sierra and winds down the state to the peaks

of Mt Baldy. As a reflection of California’s

majestic mountains, this jersey goes to the

peloton’s strongest climber. A cyclist earns this

of the Mountain (KOM) locations located at

the tops of mountains and hills. Only the first

In 2012, the UCI-registered Continental outfit will again focus on combining seasoned veterans and developing riders to achieve great results.

BISSELL has been a staple in the Amgen Tour of California since 2007. This year, the team hopes to once again feature in much of the race action. Stage 1 in Santa Rosa, and stage 2 into Santa Cruz county, hometown of rider Ben

Jacques-Maynes, hold particular significance for the team. The new course in Bakersfield is well suited for the team’s time trialists and BISSELL climbers will stay strong and focused for the mountain stages.

AmgEn’s bREAKAWAy fROm CAnCER® Celebrating survivors and Providing information About Available resources

More than one champion will be crowned during the seventh-annual Amgen Tour of California. An individual who has

been an inspiration within the local cancer community in race finish cities Santa Rosa, Livermore, Clovis, and Los Angeles will be recognized and celebrated as part of race title sponsor Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer®.

Amgen, a biotechnology pioneer that discovers, develops, manufactures, and delivers human therapeutics, founded Breakaway from Cancer, a national initiative, in 2005 to raise awareness of the important resources available to people impacted by cancer.

Earlier this year, Amgen accepted local community member nominations for Breakaway from Cancer Champions—a patient with cancer, survivor, caregiver, or advocate for the cause who is a local inspiration—in the four-race finish communities and winners were selected by public online voting.

The Breakaway from Cancer Champions will lead a special community event—the Breakaway Mile, an approximately one-mile walk for 150 community members who have been touched by cancer that crosses the finish line prior to the stage conclusion of the professional race in Santa Rosa, Livermore, Clovis and Los Angeles. Each Breakaway Mile will also feature an Amgen scientist who plays a crucial role in developing breakthrough medicines.

“Amgen is proud to honor individuals who have made a positive difference for those in the fight against cancer at the Amgen Tour of California,” said Stuart Arbuckle, vice president and general manager of Amgen Oncology. “Just as in cycling where it takes a team to win, Amgen founded Breakaway from Cancer on the belief that it also takes a team to beat cancer. The program is designed specifically to raise awareness of the many resources available to help people affected by cancer, from prevention through survivorship.”

Cancer survivors will also take center stage during daily race start and finish awards ceremonies. Each day, a local cancer survivor will officially start the day’s stage by firing the start gun. Additionally, at the conclusion of each stage of the race, the Breakaway from Cancer Champion or a local cancer survivor will present the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Most Courageous Rider Jersey to the professional rider who best exemplifies the character of those engaged in the fight against cancer—courage, sacrifice, inspiration, determination, and perseverance.

For access to valuable resources, visit breakawayfromcancer.com. Breakaway from Cancer is a collaboration between Amgen and four nonprofit partners, Prevent Cancer Foundation, Cancer Support Community, Patient Advocate Foundation, and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. These organizations will host a Breakaway from Cancer information booth at the Lifestyle Festival (at each finish city).
