Who were the Anglo Saxons? (History)
Anglo-Saxons came in ships across the North Sea to invade Britain. The Anglo-Saxon age was from 410-
1066 AD. They were a mix of tribes (the Angles, Saxons and Jutes) from Germany, Denmark and the
Netherlands.
The Saxons were from Germany and the Netherlands. The Angles were from the south of Denmark and
the Jutes came from the north of Denmark.
If you can, watch the video, read the article and have a go at the activity on the BBC Bitesize website.

Why did the Anglo Saxons come to Britain? (History)
Imagine you are an Anglo-Saxon writing to your family back home in Scandinavia. Write a
letter or design a poster informing your relatives about why Britain is a brilliant place to live
as an Anglo Saxon. Historians aren’t sure why the Anglo-Saxons came to this country. Some
think that they may have come here because it is much easier to grow food and farm. Some
think they may have been invited to help the Britons defend themselves against the Picts
(Scottish people). Others think they may have just enjoyed a good fight!

Music
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/ten-pieces/all-resources/zdg3t39
Choose three new pieces of music to listen to.
- Which do you like the best? Why?
- Watch the orchestral performance- what instruments can you see? Can you identify which
family of instruments they belong to (woodwind, brass, percussion, strings)?
- Read the description- what was the music composed for? It could be from a ballet, an opera,
a television programme, a musical, a film or simply a piece of music in its own right.
- Does the piece of music tell a story? Close your eyes and think about what the music reminds
you of. Some of the pieces are directly inspired by stories, such as ‘Storm interlude’, Hoe
down and The Firebird (which is a Russian fairy tale).

How was Anglo-Saxon Britain ruled? (History)
Anglo-Saxon Britain wasn’t ruled by one king and queen. Different tribes ruled differed parts of the country
and were often invaded by enemy tribes. Each settlement had a ‘cyning’ (or king) who ruled a kingdom.
