As soon as the Fourth of July holiday traffic dieddown around Atwood Lake in Tuscarawas County,Ohio, B.O.G. Construction, Inc. was given the greenlight by the Ohio Dept. of Transportation (ODOT) tobegin its most recent undertaking: replacing the milemarker 14 Bridge over Conotton Creek on StateRoute 212.

B.O.G. Construction, Inc., a Salem, Ohio basedcompany, has been constructing, destructing andreconstructing Ohio bridges since 1988. Contractingexclusively with ODOT, B.O.G. specializes in the newconstruction, repair, restoration and reconstructionof bridges and culverts throughout the BuckeyeState.

For this project, B.O.G was contracted to performbridge rehabilitation, or reconstruction to over 90percent of the SR 212 bridge. This is the type of workrequired when only portions or surfaces of a givenbridge have become worn or damaged beyond anODOT acceptable condition. When these bridges havestructurally sound underlying bridge componentsremaining, B.O.G. is contracted to remove thedamaged areas and reconstruct the bridge by incor-porating the remaining undamaged portions of thestructure.

Because traditional methods of bridge reconstruc-tion normally yield slim profit margins on these typesof ODOT projects, many companies avoid biddingthem altogether. B.O.G., however, has found a new

and effective method of completing these jobssuccessfully, timely and profitably. Over the pastthree years, B.O.G. owners Mark Gettman and TomO’Donnell have realized these advantages with theaddition of Allied-Gator MT™ Series Multi-Tool unitsto B.O.G.’s jobsite fleet. For the SR 212 bridgeproject, B.O.G. utilized the MT Series Multi-Toolmodel MTR 50 C (with the Quick Change™Cracker/Crusher Jaw Set) on a 25 ton excavator.

The SR 212 bridge restoration project requiredB.O.G. to remove and replace a two lane bridge, consisting of a 19-inch continuous concrete slabdeck covering three separate spans, with an averageheight of 15 to 20-feet above Conotton Creek. For thisODOT projects, B.O.G. was required work withinpressing time parameters, and was given a narrow 60day window for completion of both demolition andreconstruction of the State Route 212 bridge. In addi-tion, ODOT time specifications usually include themaximum duration of the road closure; however, lackof reasonable alternate routes around Atwood Lakewould have presented a great inconvenience for trav-

elers, who would have experienced detours up to 30miles long. Therefore, ODOT dictated that the bridgemust have one open, functional lane for traffic at alltimes.

This restriction presented a unique challenge toB.O.G. because one lane of the bridge was required toremain open during the entire bridge restorationproject. This factored heavily into B.O.G.’s strategy, with safety of the passing traffic as their number onepriority. In order to isolate each lane during the dem-olition stage and prevent traffic from being affected orendangered, B.O.G. first saw cut the bridge down thecenter. This divided the bridge into two pieces andisolated each side during its phase of the demolitionand reconstruction process, ensuring the safety ofboth the traffic and B.O.G. personnel.

Another challenge presented by this restriction wasthat, in order to keep one lane open at all times, thebridge had to be tackled in two separate phases. Thefirst lane closed, as specified by ODOT, had to becompletely demolished and reconstructed before anywork could be performed to the opposite lane. Thisalso required B.O.G. to re-route the lane closurebarriers and traffic signal being used to control onelane traffic flow over the bridge.

In addition to the time restrictions and the inabili-ty to close the bridge, B.O.G. was challenged by threeenvironmental factors. First, protected wetlands inclose proximity to the bridge on both sides preventedmachinery from working or traveling outside the tightboundaries of the specified work area. Secondly, theconcrete debris from the bridge had to be removedfrom the underlying waterway daily to prevent block-age. Because the MTR 50 C crushed the concretebridge decking into consistently sized material,B.O.G. operator Tracy Cooper could easily remove thefallen debris from Conotton Creek as needed andkeep the waterway clear. Lastly, B.O.G. was facedwith an exceptionally wet season, causing numerousrain delays and lost days of work that still countedtoward the allotted 60-day completion window.Faced with this adversity, B.O.G. was under pressureto make every working day count.

The utilization of the MTR 50 C on this project gaveB.O.G. all the advantages they were looking for. Withfast cycle times and tremendous power, the Allied-Gator MT enabled the operator to work continuouslyand quickly, breezing through the heavy duty bridgedecking full of rebar. The MT Cracker/Crusher JawSet also allowed B.O.G. to remove the rebar cleanlyfrom the concrete as it was being crushed, leavingmaterial small enough to be combined with dumprock material and used for slope protection. This pre-vented B.O.G. from spending a large amount ofresources purchasing rip rap material for use onsite.By employing a successful demolition plan and utiliz-ing the right tools for the job, B.O.G. had no troublecompleting the SR 212 bridge project within the 60day limit.

In discussing the ways in which he would havetackled this job without the MTR 50 C, Mark Gettmanreflected. Using a hydraulic hammer was out of thequestion due to strict ODOT guidelines. In fact, theseODOT restrictions prohibit the use of a hydraulichammer anytime a bridge deck is being replacedwithout the replacement of the substructurewalls/piers underneath. Due to the damage thathydraulic hammers can cause to the parts of thebridge to remain intact and be integrated into the

new construction, hydraulic hammers are onlypermitted during a complete bridge removal and areoften subject to the noise regulations of the localcommunity.

Saw cutting the entire bridge was also impracticalbecause the bridge deck was so thick. Saw cuttingwould have yielded pieces too heavy to be removed byan excavator, and would have required a crane, which would have been much more expensive andtime consuming. With the MT, each phase of thisbridge demolition only took one day. According toGettman, “Using the MT on a project like this is fivetimes faster than saw cutting and removing the heavydeck sections with a crane.” Furthermore, the largechunks would still need to be hammered intosmaller pieces before loading, which would add yetanother step to the process. In Gettman’s estimate, using the MTR 50 saved B.O.G. half the cost it wouldhave taken to employ saw cutting as the primarymethod of demolition. He remarks, “With the MT, wehad each bridge lane crushed and out of there by thetime we would have been halfway done saw cutting it.There’s a clear advantage to being able to get thatmuch heavy concrete demolished in a single day withone 25 ton excavator.”

Overall, the use of the MT Series Multi-Tool hasenabled B.O.G. to tackle complex bridge restorationand removal projects with an innovative newapproach. B.O.G. can now move on to the next ODOTjob, taking with them a positive reputation and all thenew experiences gained through overcoming the chal-lenges of the SR 212 bridge project. With Allied-Gator MT technology at their fingertips, B.O.G. cancomplete projects quicker, safer and more profitablythan ever before. In a final comment, Gettmansummarizes his experiences with the MT, “Every timewe’ve used the MT, it’s been great. There couldn’thave been an easier way to do it. In less than a day,for each lane of the bridge to be completely down andout of there — what more could you ask for?”

Side view of the first bridge lane, prior to demolition (L) and after reconstruction (R).

As soon as the first bridge lane was reconstructed andready to handle traffic, demolition on the second lanebegan.

One lane of the Conotton Creek Bridge had to remainopen at all times, and safety of passing traffic was thehighest priority.

19-inch bridge decking full of rebar was no match forthe MTR 50 C.

Although the challenging ODOTrestrictions prohibiting the use ofhydraulic hammers on selectbridge projects initially led B.O.G.owners, Mark Gettman and TomO’Donnell to the Allied-GatorMT®, the speed, power andefficiency of the MT has kept themon deck. With ODOT bridge refur-bishments on the rise, the B.O.G.team is utilizing newer, quickerand more profitable select demoli-tion techniques to grow their busi-ness.

“We’ve gone from a companywho always used a hammer when-ever we could, to a company thatuses the MT instead. In our line ofwork, there will still be timeswhen a hammer is the onlyoption, or when saw cutting andrigging are the only way, but forthe majority of our projects nowthe MT has proven itself to be thefastest and most cost effectivemethod,” says Gettman. “The MThas totally changed the way welook at projects. This attachmenthas given us a clear advantage

from the way we bid to the way weexecute these types of bridge proj-ects. We are confident that we willkeep finding new ways to use it.”

In addition to the time limita-tions and the structural integrityissue of the bridge’s remainingsupport members, B.O.G. wasfaced with some unique chal-lenges on this particular project.“Much of their work was takingplace within less than 3-feet froma continuous flow of traffic. Evenif ODOT had permitted the use ofhydraulic hammers, the flyingconcrete debris would havedefinitely caused a safety issue tothe passing traffic,” states Allied-Gator representative MikeRamun. With the MT, concrete iscrushed quickly and effectivelywithout any flying debris. It is amuch safer and controlled methodfor heavy concrete demolition.

“Their challenge of eliminatingthe heavily reinforced 19-inchthick concrete slab was com-pounded by the poor soil condi-tions and the inability to stabilize

the ground all around the under-lying creek bed. The access areasnear the bridge precluded the useof a machine and tool combina-tion larger than 25 tons,” saysRamun. Allied-Gator MTcustomers can always count onthe ability to conquer heavy dutywork with smaller tools andlighter machines.

With 11 sizes ranging from 800-52,000-pounds, the MT SeriesMulti-Tool can accommodate anysize carrier from skid steers andcompacts to the world’s largestmass excavators for use in demo-lition and recycling of structuralsteel and concrete, cast reduction, material handling and densifying,as well as railroad rail processingapplications. The MT units alsofeature unrestricted 360 degreerotation, exclusive Fixed Center-line Closure and patented Allied-Gator Speed Circuit™ Technologyfor the fastest cycle times. Each year Morbark holds a live demo of its newsproducts and shows off some of their newest innova-tions. In addition, Morbark also provides factorytours, seminars, vendor books and networkingopportunities. The Demo Days have turned into apopular event. This year, the two day event, heldSeptember 22-23, drew in over 300 people from 15countries.

Thursday evening, following a factory tour and timespent with vendors, Morbark provided a great dinnerand entertainment, preparing attendees for theoutdoor demonstrations the following day.

Mother Nature smiled on Winn, MI on Friday,

following several days of wet weather. We gathered inthe morning under sunny skies at Morbark’s demosite. We watched nearly a dozen machines in action— all with new technology designed to streamlineprocesses on the job site and reduce costs.

Two highlights were the new Advantage 3 Drum forwhole tree chippers and the 3800XL HorizontalGrinder.

Advantage 3The Advantage 3 is Morbark’s high performance

chipping drum, which comes standard now on allMorbark’s heavy duty industrial drum chippers. Italso can be retrofitted to most existing machines

without modifications. Not only does the drum produce improved chip

quality in large volume wood-chipping equipment, itsubstantially reduces recurring wear part and main-tenance costs more than 70 percent, due to AR 400heat treated steel skin, enhanced knife design andrecessed pockets.

Tim Adams, Morbark’s Marketing manager, saidthat some of the larger drums out there cost up to$60 per hour just in maintenance. Being able toreduce maintenance by 70 percent will make asignificant difference to a lot of companies’ bottomlines.

Morbark from 20

One case study showed that the approximate life ofthe knife clamp increased from 100 to 1,000 hoursand the life of the knife bolts increased from 100 to250 hours.

Morbark 3800XL Horizontal GrinderThe new Morbark 3800XL Horizontal Grinder

caught peoples’ attention. Morbark made improve-ments to the feeding technology, dramaticallyincreasing production capacity and operatingefficiency.

The big difference is the redesigned reverse pivotfeed system, which minimizes space between the feedwheel and the hammer mill. Material can’t hide in theunit and materials move forward, creating moreuninterrupted and steady production.

Taking Home ChipsOnce each of the units had finished their demon-

strations, visitors were able to sample the quality ofthe chips. This year Morbark made that processeasier by providing bags and labels. Using these forsampling, we were able to collect the different chips, mark the machine from which they came and desig-nate where we wanted the chips sent.

New PresidentMorbark has made more than equipment changes

this year. In early September, James W. ShoemakerJr. was named president of the company, replacingLon Morey, who will remain chairman of the board ofdirectors.

Shoemaker is no newbie to Morbark. He joined theteam in 2003 as manager of Operations. He’s madeincredible improvements over the years, working upto vice president of Operations.

Morey is confident in his replacement. “He not onlyhas the extensive operations, accounting and supplychain experience, which is instrumental in ourglobal expansion, but he also has extensive experi-ence in change management.”

We look forward to not only Shoemaker’s new lead-ership but another great demo in 2012.

Morbark, Inc., based in Winn, MI hasbeen innovating and manufacturingdurable, high performance equipmentfor the forestry, recycling, tree care, and sawmill markets for over 50 years.Morbark equipment helps customersharvest, process, and convert woodand other organic materials into valu-able, useful and profitable products. The company produces a full line ofChiparvestors, flails, whole tree chip-pers, brush chippers, grinders andmore. Visit www.morbark.com to learnmore.Morbark’s tub grinder makes easy work of large pieces of timber.

The Morbark 4600XL Wood Hog has no trouble grinding timber into high quality mulch.

The Morbark is available as a tracked unit forenhanced mobility.

Spectators were able to enjoy field demonstrations in the beautiful sunny weather following serveral days of rain.

Morbark’s wood chippers are now outfitted with theAdvantage 3 chipping drum.

Hey Grinder Guy, willa screen help me re-duce cost in my mulchoperation?

It sounds like you arestruggling with opera-tional costs vs. salesprices like most everyonethese days.

In short yes, but itdoes create other issues.Screening will make yourmulch perfectly consis-tent, but can make itlook bad too. For exam-ple, I recently purchaseda $5 bag and a $2 bag ofcolored mulch from mylocal home improvementstore. The $5 bag wasvery nicely colored andhad a good size and tex-ture except I pulled outabout a half dozen piecesthat were 10 to18-incheslong. Are you kiddingme? This is what I get for$5 a bag? The $2 bagwas colored about thesame but the productlooked awful. This mulchwas obviously screenedto remove the fines, butit looked as if they re-moved everything 1-1/2-inch and minus so itmade the product lookvery rough. But I guessthat’s what you get for$2 these days.

I have seen manymulch companies thathave started screeningtheir products to removethe fines, mostly forbagged materials to saveon colorant usage andbag weight. Some justdrop out fines while oth-ers scalp the overs also.

This causes several is-sues you will need todeal with:

• The overs are easilyrecycled back to thegrinder;

• The fines must bedealt with. Some sitessend them for fuel whileothers use them for soilamendment. Find anoutlet before you startscreening;

• While removing theweight, you are also re-moving some volume.You will need to increaseyour raw materialswhich will increase yourcost per yard;

• Your trucking costsinbound will increase be-cause of the greater vol-ume of raw materialsand your outboundtrucking will increasebecause the weight ofthe fines is greater thanthe mulch itself so thetruckload quantities willbe smaller; and

• Different materialsmake different sizes afterthe grinding process, so

you may need to mix ma-terials or change screensizes on the screener

So what is theanswer?

Just dropping out thefines is a quick fix. If youhave an abundance ofmaterials and have a lu-crative market for thefines, then that is fine. Ifnot, MAKE LESS FINES!

The number one mis-take operations make isthat they keep every-thing the same and dropin a screener, so you endup with the same costs, wear etc., plus youadded a screener. You

are screening to makethe perfect product, souse the screener to makeyour product size andnot the grinder. Increasethe grinder screen size. Ifyou use a 1-1/2-inch tomake your mulch, thentry a 3-inch screen tofeed into the screenerand keep increasing thescreen size until the fin-ished product size startslooking too rough. Thiswill reduce your fines, fuel usage and wear, andthen recycle the oversback to the grinder.

Dealer to representKomptech screeners, shredders and turners

in the Southeast

WESTMINSTER, CO —Komptech USA hasadded another majordealer to serve its grow-

ing number of cus-tomers. Powerscreen is aleading manufacturer ofmobile crushing, screen-ing and washing ma-chinery for the quarry-ing, mining and recy-cling industries. Power-screen Florida serves theSoutheast U.S. andCaribbean. To round outits lineup, the companyhas added Komptech

screeners, shreddersand compost turners toits portfolio.

Richard Grant of Pow-erscreen Florida noted,“We are pleased to addKomptech’s broad line ofscreening, shreddingand recycling productsto complement the exist-ing Powerscreen line ofcrushing and screeningproducts we supply for

the markets in thesoutheast U.S. This ad-dition allows Power-screen Florida to providesolutions for customersin all related industriesin the material process-ing sector. Komptech’sline of Starscreens, slowspeed shreddersand windrow turnersprovide excellent oppor-tunities for us to deliver

needed solutions to ourcustomer’s applica-tions.”

Komptech specializesin waste handling andrecycling technology. Itsmachines are made inAustria and appreciatedthe world over for theirtoughness, efficiencyand build quality. Formore information, seekomptechusa.com.

What screener?• Trommels work bet-

ter than flat decks be-cause of shear screenvolume but nothingworks better than a starscreen for easy adjusta-bility in product sizewithout changingscreens;

• Match the screenerto your finished productproduction rate. Match-ing the grinder produc-

tion rate, especially afterincreasing screen sizes, will overload every othercomponent downstream, unless you are onlystockpiling.

Fines screen sizes willbe anywhere from 1/4 to3/4-inch depending onyour product, but don’tdrop out too many fines. The overs can usually bescalped with 1-1/2 or 2-inch. The star screen ad-

justability makes it thepush of a button tochange the product sizeon the fly.

In conclusion, if youcouple the grinder to ascreener you are nowstarting to automate theprocess. Whether youare grinding whole treesor regrinding, you cannow load at a specificrate while reducing en-gine load and fuel usage

and extending the life ofyour engine and grinder.

Combine those savingswith your savings fromincreasing the grinderscreen size, which in-creased your grinderwear parts life, and nowit makes “CENTS” toscreen your mulch.
