Prof Sajjan Rao, a chartered engineer, has designed the automatic toilet waste collection and disposal system for railways and transport vehicles. According to Rao, the automatic toilet waste collection and disposal system is unique in its design and environment friendly.

Prof Rao developed two models - flap valve and plug valve. These models have collecting chamber, discharge valve and wind place at the lower end.

"The discharge valve automatically opens and closes by the action of the wind plate. The natural force of the wind acting on wind plate in the direction opposite to the moving train, which causes the discharge valve opens and closes. The size of the wind place determines at which speed of train the vale operates,'' Prof Rao said.

According to him, the operation of the valve can be determined at any desired speed of the train by changing the size of the wind plate.

"No electrical or external power is required for its function. The system is closed one with its storage capacity is about 40 liters. By virtuate of the materials of construction of the system, it is almost maintenance free with long lasting in service,'' he said.

The automatic toilet waste collection and disposal equipment can be fitted to the existing toilet of the compartment without modification and it functions in either directions of the movement of the train.

"During halting of train, the human waste discharged from the toilet is collected in the collection chamber. When the train start moving at pre-determined speed and away from the station or town, the discharge valve automatically start open and human waste discharges from collection chamber on to the ground,'' he said.

He stated that as long as the train moving at pre-determined speed, the valve remains in open position, human waste directly discharges on to the ground. "As soon as the train enters a town or railway station with below the pre-determined speed the discharge valve automatically closes. The human waste collects in the collection chamber by usage of the toilet by the passengers,'' he explained.
