The last session of the Maryland General Assembly was the most productive in recent history. All of us on the 43rd Dis-trict team worked very hard to pass important bills that will build a better future for Baltimore and Maryland. Here’s how some of the major bills we passed will advance our key priorities for our District.

Expanding Access to Health Care: As a re-sult of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, thousands of uninsured Marylanders will be eligible for Medicaid and tens of thousands of other Marylanders will be eligible for reduced-cost health insurance through the state’s new health insurance exchanges starting on Oct. 1. We’re working to help Marylanders understand how they can apply for cover-age, and you can learn more details about plans and eligibility at www.marylandhbe.com or in the insert.

Revitalizing the Baltimore Region: In Jan-uary, I was one of three city delegates appointed by House Speaker Michael Busch to the Regional Revitalization Work-group for the Baltimore Region. As a member of this task force, I’ve been working hard to learn more about commer-cial and residential development opportunities across our district. I’ve met with with leaders from MTA, Station North, Waverly Main Street, the York Road Partnership, Remington

development initiatives, and our anchor institutions. The workgroup is studying ways to boost the city’s efforts to at-tract and retain new residents. We will propose legislation and new budget priorities to make that happen in the next legislative session, and I’ll share our proposals with district residents when they’re completed.

Helping Homeless Youth: Last Spring I spon-sored a bill that created a state Task Force to Study Hous-ing and Supportive Services for Unaccompanied Homeless Youth. This panel of representatives from state agencies and nonprofit and advocacy groups met throughout the Summer to assess the state’s programs to support the housing and transitional shelter needs of unaccompanied homeless youth (age 14 to 25) and to identify the resources and new policy initiatives we need to fill the gaps in those programs. Our re-port will be issued on Nov. 1, and I’ll report to you later in the Fall about what we’ve learned and what we plan to do.

During each legislative session (January-April), I work very hard in Annapolis to repre-

sent the interests of the 43rd District and Baltimore City. When we are not in session,

my colleagues and I continue to support our local communities and to prepare for up-

coming sessions. Here are some of the things I’m working on right now:

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

CONSIDER YOUR LIFESTYLE AND HEALTH NEEDS. Do you need to visit your provider regularly? Or, are your medical needs few and far between? Knowing answers to questions like these can help you figure out how much coverage you need.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION. Under health reform (“Obamacare”), you can’t be denied coverage just because you have a pre-existing condition. And at Evergreen Health, you’ll never have to pay a higher premium because of it.

THINK BEYOND THE MONTHLY PREMIUM PRICE. Evergreen Health offers high quality, low cost plans, but not all companies are like us. Beware of ultra-low monthly premiums. They often mean sky-high deductibles and a low number of covered services. And that could cost you a lot in the long run.

ASK QUESTIONS. Health insurance plans can be confusing. So, ask questions if you have them and make sure to talk to a real person. When you call Evergreen Health, you will always get a live person ready to help you.
