“LTE” Update:

An announcement was made last May that the Campbell’s Labels for Education (LFE) is drawing to an close.

As of August 1, 2016, only UPCs with the LFE logo will be accepted and can be redeemed for points. Campbells has started removing the LFE logo from products and expect to offer only a limited number of products with the logo through August 1, 2017.

PTA Over the Summer

Spirit Night at California Pizza Kitchen

Washington families had the chance to meet-up before classes started at the CPK Dine Out event on August 7, one of the most successful Dine Outs in recent PTA history! The PTA received a check from CPK for $500! All proceeds from Dine Outs are used to fund the many programs and activities the PTA provides, such as field trips, STEM activities, birthday books, cultural awareness programs, and social events for the Washington Community. Thank you to everyone who attended this event.

And a special Thank You to our new PTA Dine Out Chairperson, Megan Kriss!

By participating in the Labels for Education program (LFE) over the last 16 years, the PTA has been able to acquire equipment and supplies for Gym classes, Recess, and Art classes.

This summer, we had 23,239 points in our “bank” that were redeemed for merchandise, resulting in a wonderful assortment of sports equipment (gym balls, playground balls,) Crayola art supplies (paints, chalks, markers, crayons), and other various supplies, valued at $700+. Thank you to all!

Labels for Education News

This summer, our Chairperson of Corporate Giving, Mandie Porick, was able to take advantage of a “double points” redemption opportunity, resulting in FREE SUPPLIES for Washington School!

Although the LFE program is ramping down, please continue sending in the labels with logos in your child’s backpack or drop them in the bin outside the office! If you have questions or want more information, please contact Mandie Porick at [email protected]

Page 5: Washington PTA Newsletter · 2016-12-12 · Washington PTA Newsletter October 17, 2016 Number 1 In This Issue Washington School Directory Available Knights on the Run results and

The program will officially end once all LFE logos have been removed from products.

PTA Events from August

“Welcome Back” Staff Appreciation Breakfast

On the day before students returned to Washington, August 16, the PTA hosted its first Staff Appreciation Event of the school year; a continental breakfast for the entire Washington Staff.

This could not have happened without the incredible effort of Barb Kading and Megan Chapman, our new Co-Chairpersons of the Staff Appreciation Committee. Thank you so much, Barb and Megan!

PTA Ice Cream Social

Thank you to all the Washington Families and Staff who supported the PTA Ice Cream Social! It was great to see Washington friends and families. Plus we enjoyed meeting so many of Washington’s newest families.

Because we did not have an official Chairperson to organize the event, two of our PTA Vice Presidents, Wendi Viola and Clariza Varney, took on the task and made it a wonderful event. Thank you Wendi and Clariza!

Wendi and Clariza wish to thank all of the volunteers: Michael Halter, Gene Olsen, Beth Ciabattari, Lisa Leftwich, Mary Moore, Anne-Marie Lemp, Kathy Radojkovic, Judith Zapf, and Neil Viola, as well as a few key pre-event helpers: Sydney Schilling, Abbie Lemp, Adam Halter, Jacob Halter, Monica Kading, Aiden Viola. And thanks to the rest of the PTA Officers for their help: Shelley, Lynn, Adrianne, Ann Marie and Barb for their help with set-up, PTA Welcome Table, and ticket sales.

PTA Events from September

“Battle of the Books” Lunchtime Meetings Resume Sometimes it's tough to find the "next good book" you'll dive into....but that's not a problem for our Washington Battle of the Books team! Battle of the Books is an annual PTA activity which challenges 4th and 5th graders to read and become familiar with 50 specific book titles selected by the Wheaton Public Library. Sixteen local elementary schools then participate in team trivia competitions covering facts & details drawn from the Battle books. Our Battlers have been reading the books over the summer and, since August 30th, have been meeting each Tuesday during the lunch hour to prepare for the meets that begin in January. A highlight for the month of October is Taste of Battle, where Battlers are offered the chance to sample tastes of foods featured in one or more of the Battle books. A big thank you goes out to Culver’s of Carol Stream for donating condiment cups for Taste of Battle. Washington’s Battle Team is coached by Co-Chairs Kelly Aten and Krista Boba and could not exist without the efforts of dedicated volunteers: Barb Kading, Shelley Schilling, Judith Zapf and Chris Zych; as well as support from parents encouraging their Battlers to keep on reading!

Mileage Club Back in Action

Washington Students wasted no time jumping right back into Mileage Club this year! Mary Moore, Chairperson of the lunchtime Mileage Club, was able to kick-off this year’s program on September 6. Mileage Club will run (pun intended!) every Tuesday and Thursday from now until Fall/Thanksgiving break. It will resume after Spring Break.

Due to this year’s enthusiastic demand, we are running low on the colored sticks earned for each lap. Please encourage your child to redeem her/his sticks for the toe token as soon as she/he acquires 30 sticks. Thank you!

Thank You, Health Screening Volunteers

On September 24, Washington Elementary School hosted Hearing and Vision screenings for students. And the PTA was proud to provide volunteer support for this effort. Thank you to Clariza Varney, Kathy Radojkovic and Barb Kading for your assistance bringing students to and from screenings and supervising the students in queue. To volunteer for this committee, please contact Judith Zapf, [email protected]

Spirit Night at Culver’s

Once again, Washington Families filled the Culver’s dining room to standing-room-only capacity for over an hour at September’s Spirit Night. Plus, the $354 in proceeds breaks previous records! Thank you to all the families and staff members who attended. And, of course, we thank Chairperson Megan Kriss for another successful Dine Out.

This year, Prinicpal Mrs. Craig was issued an official Culver’s name tag!

Washington’s Reflections program commenced during Arts in Education Week, September 12th, and ran through October 19th. Students from PTA-sponsored schools all over the nation will submit their own original works of art, including visual arts, photography, music composition, film production, literature, and dance.

This year, the Washington PTA hosted four Reflections Workshops for students interested in working on a Reflections project during their recess. The sessions were held September 28th, October 5th, October 12th, and October 19th in the LLC.

Last year, Washington had 34 Reflections entries:

19 entries advanced to the District level

6 entries advanced to the Regional level

2 entries advanced to the State level

1 entry was awarded with a State Honorable Mention We will announce results as they are released. Good Luck to our talented Washington Students!

If you have any questions about Reflections, please contact Elizabeth Manning at [email protected]

WHAT IS A BUTTER BRAID?

It’s a sweet, flaky pastry wrapped around fruit and

other sweet, edible fillings.

Store in the freezer until the night before you need it. Leave it out for 8-12 hours so it can thaw and rise.

Then place in the oven for 25 minutes

or so and enjoy!

Help Needed!

Chess Club Chairperson Needed

Although the PTA is ready to fully support the lunchtime Chess Club, it cannot resume unless a Chairperson volunteers to run the program.

Chairperson requirements are the ability to meet with the students at least every other Friday between November and March. The Chairperson would lead a chess lesson at each meeting, appropriate for the student’s ages and abilities. Volunteers would be recruited to assist with “crowd control” at the meetings.

If you or someone you know might be interested in leading the Chess Club, please contact Lynn Kadel, [email protected] to discuss.
