The efforts of the WDCEP have proven to show that it has positively influenced the District’s economy and contributed to significant job growth, tax revenue, and real estate transactions.

Since 2000, the WDCEP has accomplished the following:

• Assisted with 4.6 million in square feet of new leases• Helped to create 13,032 jobs in DC• Helped generate $86.3 million of annual sales tax by 2018

In 2014, WDCEP accomplished the following:

• 41 WDCEP assisted businesses opened• 945k+ square feet of deals WDCEP helped close in FY14• 591 potential new DC businesses attended Entrepreneur

Road Map

The Washington, DC Economic Partnership (WDCEP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Washington, DC economic growth in office, retail, hospitality, education, and residential markets. WDCEP strives to retain businesses, participate in business attraction activities, and take the lead to market and promote the city as a great place to start and expand a business.

As the leading economic resource for Washington, DC, it is our goal to foster partnerships between organizations, provide entrepreneur workshops to assist small business growth, provide un-biased economic and demographic data and research through our website and publications, as well as manage the promotion of DC’s tech initiatives, DigitalDC, and mentor program, Accelerate DC.

BUSINESS ATTRACTION & FACILITATION

The WDCEP assists in the development of a vibrant and sustainable economy in the District of Columbia by marketing business and investment opportunities throughout the city. WDCEP actively markets these opportunities by representing the District at industry tradeshows across the nation, conducting site tours in target market areas, and through national and international marketing campaigns.

International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC)

Since 2001, the WDCEP has represented the District of Columbia at International Council of Shopping Centers’ (ICSC) annual meeting which attracts more than 30,000 retailers, developers, and brokers to Las Vegas. The event provides valuable face time in a business conference setting for investors to become more familiar with District of Columbia officials and economic development professionals. In 2014, the WDCEP conducted more than 80 meetings with retailers and developers from across the nation demonstrating the District’s commitment to attracting high quality national and international retail establishments. This year, there were 342 individuals that visited the District’s booth during the three-day conference. In addition, WDCEP hosted the “We Choose DC” reception at RECon with an attendance of 419 people.

In addition to its Las Vegas efforts, WDCEP represented the District and conducted more than 30 meetings at ICSC Mid-Atlantic (Washington, DC).

SXSW

SXSW, one of the largest technology, film, and music conferences in the world held each year in Austin, Texas provides WDCEP with the opportunity to showcase DC’s growing technology hub to technology industry leaders, entrepreneurs, programmers/developers, investors, and media. This past year, WDCEP organized and facilitated DC’s official on-the-ground presence at SXSW bringing together various partners from DC’s public and private sector to coordinate a strong and comprehensive marketing campaign to promote the District’s vibrant tech sector to more than 72,000 attendees from over 82 countries that attended the conference.

CoreNet

For the first time, the WDCEP attended CoreNet in October 2014 hosted by CoreNet Global the world’s leading association for corporate real estate (CRE) and workplace professionals, service providers, and economic developers. In 2014, the WDCEP began to increase its role in growing the office market in the District starting with leading DC’s presence at this event

Space Finding Tours

WDCEP organized and executed seven neighborhood tours in partnership with the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) and other economic development organizations. Joined by DC government officials, brokers, property owners, entrepreneurs, and service providers, the WDCEP led these neighborhood tours to showcase retail and investment opportunities along the following major commercial corridors:

Regional, National, and International Promotion of the DC Business Opportunities

In 2014, the WDCEP expanded its business attraction, marketing, and public relations efforts to include a pro-active strategic communications strategy to promote the District as a prime location for business domestically and internationally through a variety of resources and marketing activities. At the end of its fiscal year, WDCEP added a Director of Marketing to its team to lead its communications, public relations, and marketing efforts to further increase awareness of WDCEP’s initiatives and increase the city’s appeal for businesses.

As a result of this strategy, the WDCEP successfully raised awareness of the District’s thriving economy and business opportunities in major publications. Coverage of the partnership throughout the year includes Forbes Magazine, Washington Post, Washington Post Express, Capitol Business, Washington Business Journal, Washington City Paper, Bisnow, NBC4, ElevationDC, DCist, Technical.ly DC, and Globe Street among others.

The WDCEP also established a partnership with Washington Business Journal to run neighborhood highlights from its Neighborhood Profiles publication with sections including Georgetown, the 14th and U Street corridor, Union Market, and NoMa & H Street, NE. This partnership allows exposure of DC neighborhood demographics, enables small businesses to place ads, and increases awareness of the partnerships on a local level.

In November, 2014, WDCEP launched its Capitalize campaign in a full spread with Delta’s inflight magazine, Sky Magazine, a banner ad both on its website and newsletter. The partnership was also able to run a month-long airport campaign promoting Washington, DC attributes at National Airport.

Union Market

Here, a wide variety of multi-cultural and socio-economic groups converge in the spir-it of creativity, entrepreneurship, and love of food. Union Market is quickly returning to its roots as a powerful economic engine and culinary destination, and in the process, transforming the fl ourishing, creative urban fabric of DC.

The newly revamped Market at Union Market is a year-round indoor market of local artisans and vendors as varied as local farmers, bakers, old-school meat butch-ers, a cheese monger and a mixologist. In a short span of time, the Market has become the culinary epicenter of the District hosting famous chef-stars and foodies from around the country.

The Market was restored by EDENS and sits within the larger 45-acre Union Mar-ket district, which historically has been DC’s center for industrial whole sale and spe-cialized retail food distribution. This co-exis-tence and mutual reinforcement is emblem-atic of the vision to transform the largely industrial area into a 21st century hub for not only food production and sale, but also for the burgeoning creative economy, tech startups and local businesses. At a project-ed build out of almost eight milion square feet, Union Market is envisioned as a vibrant district containing a mix of uses including retail, restaurants, hotels, residential, and entertainment.

Tech Sector's Capital Infusion Washington's Real-Estate Market Is Getting a Boost By MAX TAVES Aug. 19, 2014 6:47 p.m. ET

IStrategyLabs will relocate to a former Wonder Bread factory in Washington. Douglas Development

To accommodate the growth of his digital-advertising agency, Peter Corbett will move his firm to a 17,000-square-foot office housed in a refurbished Wonder Bread factory, a historic building in Washington that was abandoned in the 1980s and recently brought back to life by Douglas Development Corp.

The deal, completed last week, means that Mr. Corbett's firm, iStrategyLabs, will nearly triple the amount of space it is leasing in the city. At the same time, it is moving away from the upscale Dupont Circle to the transitional Shaw community, which city officials are trying to position as part of the city's technology corridor—a roughly five-block-wide, three-mile-long stretch of Georgia Avenue in northwest Washington.

It’s a simple, straightforward question for most entrepreneurs. Where is your company based? But for Joseph Kopser, it’s not so cut and dry. “It’s complicated,” said Kopser, one of the founders of the transportation start-up RideScout. “I like to say we were conceived in Arlington, Virginia, born in Austin, Texas, and raised in Washington, D.C.” “Truth is,” he added, “we don’t have just one home.”

DC Doing Business Guide

The DC Doing Business Guide provides step-by-step essentials for starting, expanding, or relocating your business in DC and includes detailed information on business resources, regulations, and requirements. Now in its seventh edition, the Doing Business in DC guide is printed bi-annually, offered online, and distributed to DC’s business resource centers, business improvement districts, government agencies, nonprofits, and community development corporations.

Entrepreneur Road Map: Monthly Speaker Series

Entrepreneur Road Map’s Monthly Speaker Series brings the DC Doing Business Guide to life with monthly seminars dedicated to each essential entrepreneurial topic. Featuring experts in each topic ranging from initial business start-up considerations to business financing, entrepreneurs and business owners are able to gain access to some of the city’s top thought leaders and have the opportunity to network with both panelists and other attendees. In WDCEP’s effort to attract, retain, and grow business in the District, this initiative is a critical educational tool and resource for those that want to do business in the nation’s capital.

Accelerate DC Venture Mentoring Service

In 2013, the WDCEP launched a new business development initiative for the District’s technology community - AccelerateDC Venture Mentoring Service (AccelerateDC VMS). AccelerateDC is designed to support innovation and entrepreneurial activity throughout the District by connecting emerging entrepreneurs with experienced mentors. Building on the highly successful model of the MIT Venture Mentoring Service, Accelerate DC VMS uses a team-based approach to mentoring where entrepreneurs are paired with a team of experienced mentors who offer a wealth of knowledge, entrepreneurial business experience, and extensive networks to young entrepreneurs.

DC Development Report: 2013/2014 Edition

The DC Development Report is an annual publication that gives a comprehensive overview of development and construction activity in the District of Columbia. The DC Development Report has long been a tool used by public officials, developers, brokers, and investors looking to inform their clients and constituents about the development occurring in the District. The DC Development Report: 2013/2014 Edition is a compilation of nearly 13 years of data on approximately $85 billion in development within the District. The 2013/2014 Edition summarized 1,457 development projects in the District, detailed the development trends, and highlighted the major projects in the office, retail, residential, hospitality, and education markets, and revealed trends about the projects expected to deliver in 2014 and 2015.

In addition, WDCEP partnered with CBRE to provide an economic and development overview of DC and in-depth analysis of the office, retail, and residential markets. The information found in the DC Development Report is the result of WDCEP’s annual development census which compiles research and data from more than 100 developers, architects, contractors and economic development organizations each year.

2014 Neighborhood Profiles

Finding information on Washington’s neighborhoods is simplified with the WDCEP’s Neighborhood Profiles book. This year’s publication provides snapshots for 50 DC neighborhoods, commercial corridors, and New Communities Initiatives. Each profile contains a brief description of the neighborhood, a local map, demographic information on area residents, photos, and more. The 2014 Neighborhood Profiles were updated with the latest neighborhood demographic information, updated Metrorail and Capital BikeShare counts, area highlights, a District-level demographic overview, retail market recap as well as added information on the Great Streets Initiative and Main Street programs for retailers and small businesses. The WDCEP works with its local partners to make sure that each profile is up-to-date on the latest economic development news and developments.

Development SearchIn conjunction with the DC Development Report, the WDCEP offers an interactive development search at search.wdcep.com. This tool allows users to search nearly 1,600 development projects that have been completed in the District since 2001, under construction or in the pipeline.

Retail Site Search In order to help national and local retailers and restaurants find space in DC, WDCEP, in coordination with the Office of the Chief Technology Officer, created an online search tool called Retail Site Search. This interactive search allows retailers to query more than nearly 500 retail opportunities by size, neighborhood, timeframe, and address or intersection. The information on each site includes the space available for lease, Metrorail and traffic counts, neighborhood demographics, images of the space, and leasing contacts. The tool integrates technologies and data from Google Maps & Streetview, DC Data Catalog, and the WDCEP. Beyond the retail site information, a user will also be able to learn about the zoning around a site or determine the size of an adjacent parcel using the map layers function. The tool can be accessed from the WDCEP’s website www.wdcep.com.

Annual Meeting & Development Showcase

Since 2001, the WDCEP’s Annual Meeting & Development Showcase (AMDS) has been the premier gathering of DC’s top business and community leaders to celebrate the District’s vibrant economy. The 2013 program opened with the Development Showcase, the largest event of its kind, featuring more than 60 exhibitors representing almost every major commercial, retail, and housing development in the District. The Development Showcase was followed by the Annual Meeting luncheon which attracted more than 600 attendees, featuring DC’s top business leaders, entrepreneurs, real estate professionals, and local government officials.

This year’s lineup of speakers included remarks by Mayor Vincent C. Gray, Councilmember Jack Evans, and keynote speaker Knight Kiplinger, noted economic forecaster – journalist, DC businessman and Washington native – dissected the national trends that will affect the Capital City.

Internship Program

The WDCEP understands the importance of mentorship and fellowship for the District’s developing workforce. We offer internship opportunities for students located in our city. Eleven students interned in the WDCEP office this year, providing research, business development, location mapping, event planning, and programming support. We believe that the future of the District’s economic resurgence is impacted by the experience and opportunities of its youth.
