Washington DC and NYC
On the Thursday before half term, 24 girls from the Sixth Form and Year 11 left for Heathrow on the
biennial trip to the USA. We flew the long 8 hours to Baltimore, and then boarded a coach for Washington
DC. On the first night, we were all so exhausted we quickly fell asleep after having a short walk around
Rosslyn where we were staying. The next day, we were up early and headed out on the metro to Mount
Vernon, the country house of the first president of the United States, George Washington, set in some
stunning Virginia countryside. During our time in the city, we saw many of the famous sites like the
Congress, the Supreme Court, the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. On Saturday, we visited
the Arlington National Cemetery, which was very moving as it is the resting place of 400,000 men, women
and children. Afterwards, we made our way to the museums and the White House.
On the Sunday, we took the train to New York City and that evening headed to Time Square and the
Empire State Building. The night time view was incredible from the top! The following day we took a boat
to Ellis Island, passing by the Statue of Liberty. New York was such an amazing place – we saw the 9/11
museum, Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central Station and had lunch at Katz’s Delicatessen, the scene for a
famous episode in ‘When Harry Met Sally’. The highlight for many was seeing the production of
‘Chicago’ on Broadway on Monday evening, closely followed by the tour of Radio City and meeting an
actual ‘Rockette’. Many thanks to Mrs Corner, Mr Vickery and Mrs Webb for looking after us and making
the trip possible.
