A Joint FEMA-OEM Exercise, June 2016 FEMA Region 10 has recently released the Cascadia

Rising Exercise Scenario Document which has just been posted at:

http://www.oregonaresraces.org/?page_id=559 This is a large file about 7 Mb in size with many maps

of expected damage from a CSZ quake based on the most recent research. Our Spring and Fall SETS this year will be based on this document. You will find it very interesting reading.

FIELD DAY JUNE 27-28

A few people want to do this, but we need leadership and a place, etc...

I will not be in town for this one

DEVIL'S HEAD JUNE 28TH 7AM - 7PM

Mt. Scott Motorcycle Club has asked if we could provide communications for them

Part of their permit requires that they have comms   This event is in Tillamook forest, centered around Triangulation Point &

Diamond Mill   Only 2 sites needed, one on Triangulation Point, one below at a rally point

Diamond Mill.   This conflicts with Field Day, but maybe not.      After Washington county members tell me how and if they want to

participate       I will move on to D1 members next for other volunteers

Page 23: WASHINGTON COUNTY ARES April 2015 NOTES! VISITORS Please leave an email address on the sign up sheet

FIELD ANTENNA CRITERIA Easy to transport

Different requirements for Backpacking Compact sedan Pickup truck Motorhome

Quick and easy to set up Adequate performance

Trade-offs depend on how long you will use the antenna and the level of performance required for your application.

VHF ANTENNA CHOICES Simple antenna equivalent to a dipole

Ground plane J-pole Commercial vertical ~4’ to 5’ long

Beam Yagi or quad that collapses for transport

Support ANTENNA HEIGHT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN GAIN Plan for a height of 12’ to 20’ if possible

Page 25: WASHINGTON COUNTY ARES April 2015 NOTES! VISITORS Please leave an email address on the sign up sheet

VHF RELATIVE SIGNAL GAIN VS. HEIGHT

Getting a VHF antenna up at least 10’ makes a significant difference in signal strength. Further increases are useful, but above 20’ the difficulty may outweigh any signal strength improvement.

HF ANTENNA CHOICES Dipole

Often room for a wire dipole, even on 160m. For local NVIS operation, may need multi-band capability

40m, 60m, 80m, 160m are NVIS options Manual switching or automatic capability. Watch radiation patterns on end- or off-center-fed antennas.

Shortened dipoles (especially made from mobile whips) Efficiency, bandwidth suffer Try to make at least half sized Use a balun.

Vertical: NOT good for NVIS Add a ¼ wave wire to base of HF mobile antenna and run it out to a tree. Great for DX when installed overlooking salt water.

Tuner is helpful when SWR isn’t too high.

Try to get it up 15-20’, but low antennas can still work.

SUPPORTS Telescoping masts (painters’ pole) Sectional masts

Military mast sections, tent poles, pipe, etc. 4’ max is optimum. Pick up mast and add more sections to the bottom of

the stack instead of trying to tilt the assembled mast up into place

How to hold it up Tripod Guy ropes and anchors Lean it against a building or through a tree Bungee cord to a sign post or fence

Rope over a tree branch – use a throwing bucket
