02

Let us now praise famous men and women! Michael Mann returns to the role of director with his first film since Miami Vice, Public Enemies in which Johnny Depp plays John Dillinger to Christian Bale's FBI gangbuster, Melvin Purvis. As with all of Mann's work, this is a glossy, technically astonishing thriller designed expressly for the big screen and graced with the best of Hollywood acting talent. On a wholly different scale comes Telstar, Nick Moran's portrait of eccentric and troubled record producer, Joe Meek, who pioneered recording techniques in the early 1960s for The Tornados, The Honeycombs and Billy Fury, among others. Con O'Neill gives a compelling performance as Meek, ably supported by a strong cast, including a very anglicised Kevin Spacey and James Corden. Audrey Tautou, returns as Coco Chanel in the biopic Coco Before Chanel, exploring the life and rise to fame of one of the great couturiers and fashion icons.

Jodi Piccoult's novel My Sister's Keeper is brought to the screen and in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee Robin Wright Penn gives a spellbinding performance of the eponymous heroine with lustrous support from the likes of Alan Arkin, Julianne Moore, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. The production team that delighted us with Little Miss Sunshine has taken on an equally unlikely scenario and produced another little wonder in Sunshine Cleaning in which Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria) and Amy Adams (Doubt, Miss Pettigrew) put a positive shine on terrible events. For Hardeep, Rashmi and Atul, terrible events appear to revolve around their family, thus Meera Syal, Nitin Ganatra and Zubin Varla try to sort out the consequences of their mother's death in a comedy that will make you wince with recognition as much as it makes you laugh in Mad, Sad & Bad.

Have fun.John Gore. Film Programmer

The Damned United 15Fri 3 – Sun 5 Jul Dir: Tom Hooper UK 2009 93mins Cast: Michael Sheen, Timothy Spall

Acclaimed actor Michael Sheen (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) continues his startling run bringing public figures to film as the legendary, opinionated football manager Brian Clough, with Timothy Spall as his right hand man, only friend and crutch, Peter Taylor.

Set in 60s and 70s England, The Damned United tells the confrontational and darkly humorous story of Brian Clough’s doomed 44 day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football, Leeds United. Previously managed by his bitter rival Don Revie, Leeds had an aggressive and cynical style of football – an anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Clough.

Based on the 2003 BBC mini-series of the same title and from the makers of The Last King of Scotland, this film boasts another star turn from Helen Mirren as a feisty newspaper editor.

This political thriller follows Stephen Collins (Affleck), a fast-rising US Congressman whose ambitions are threatened when his mistress (a former research assistant) is found dead in suspicious circumstances.

During a probe into a series of seemingly unrelated murders, Cal McCaffrey (Crowe), an investigative journalist and Collins’ former campaign manager, finds himself tasked with solving the case, becoming romantically entangled with the Congressman’s estranged wife in the process.

Fireflies in the Garden 15Fri 10 – Sun 12 Jul Dir: Dennis Lee US 2008 100mins Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Julia Roberts, Ioan Gruffudd

Award-winning filmmaker Dennis Lee guides a stellar ensemble in this haunting family drama of recrimination and reconciliation in Fireflies in the Garden. Oscar-winner Julia Roberts is at the centre of the story playing a beleaguered family matriarch, Lisa, who has subordinated her needs and desires to those of her family, particularly her cold, demanding husband (Dafoe). Lisa's sudden death brings her entire clan together and triggers a series of flashbacks that reveal how the seeds of discontent today were planted years earlier.

Starring Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Hayden Panettiere and Ioan Gruffudd, Fireflies in the Garden juxtapositions the past and present in a fluid, lyrical, and emotionally resonant manner to demonstrate that, while family is hard to live with, it is impossible to live without.

Katyn 15Fri 24 – Sun 26 Jul Dir: Andrzej Wajda Poland 2007 121mins subtitled Cast: Artur Zmijewski, Maja Ostaszewska

Katyn is the story of Polish army officers murdered by the Russia secret police in the Katyn forest during the Second World War and the families who, unaware of the crime, were still waiting for their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers to return. It is a film about the continuing struggle over history and memory, and an uncompromising exploration of the Russian cover up of the massacre that prevented the Polish people from commemorating those that had been killed.

Little over a month after the German invasion of Poland, at the beginning of World War Two, The Red Army began an incursion into Polish territory from the east. With most of eastern Poland soon under Soviet control nearly quarter of a million Polish officers, regular soldiers and policemen found themselves in Russian internment camps.

But what of those women, waiting for their beloved in the Polish state, who are dependent on Soviet Russia? Will the ideas of homeland and freedom retain the same meaning for those who have accepted the new system?

“Leading Polish director Andrzej Wajda lost his father in the Soviet massacre of polish officers and soldiers in Katyn forest in 1940. His film is a powerful re-creation of the event.” Times Culture

Tato and Beto are two brothers who have a simple dream of saving enough money to build their mother her ideal house. But fate has other plans; a friendly game of soccer leads to first one, then the other being taken on by the nation’s top talent scout, Batuta, and gives rise to the first of many emotional head to heads between the brothers.

Public Enemies 18 Fri 7 – Thu 13 Aug Dir: Michael Mann US 2009 143mins Cast: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard

Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the public.

No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone.

But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang thrilled many, Hoover hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI”.

In reaction, one of his most promising pupils begins to slide deeper and deeper into trouble. Can the teacher save him from himself?

The Go-Between PGFri 28 & Sat 29 Aug Dir: Joseph Losey UK 1971 116mins Cast: Alan Bates, Julie Christie, Edward Fox

Losey’s adaptation of LP Hartley’s novel is one of his more impressive later works. Together with screenwriter Harold Pinter, he creates another of his depictions of the destructive side of the English class system, as a love affair between the daughter of an affluent country family and a local farmer is tragically thwarted by prejudice and convention. Seen through the eyes of a young boy who acts as the instrument for the couple’s assignations, the affair becomes the nexus for all the repression and unspoken manipulations brewing under the polite façade of an apparently civilised society.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct 15L’instinct de mortFri 28 Aug – Thu 3 Sep Dir: Jean-François Richet France/Canada/Italy 2008 113mins subtitled Cast: Vincent Cassel, Cécile De France, Gérard Depardieu

Jacques Mesrine, last of the great French gangsters, was declared Public Enemy Number One during his lifetime. He regularly finished atop the list of newsmakers in opinion polls. His spectacular death, shot full of holes by police at close range in the middle of Paris, put the crowning touch on his legend. Thirty years after his demise in 1979, the myth of Jacques Mesrine is very much alive. This, the first installment of the two-part biopic devoted to him, is a whirlwind introduction to the charismatic career criminal who became a household name in France.

Featuring a career defining performance by Vincent Cassel (Eastern Promises and Ocean's Thirteen), Gerard Depardieu, Mathieu Amalric (Diving Bell and the Butterfly) and Ludvine Sagnier (Swimming Pool), the film follows the incredible series of hold-ups, prison breaks and kidnappings throughout the 70s and 80s and across several continents. The second installment of this biopic will arrive at Warwick Arts Centre in September.

Amadeus: The Director’s Cut is includes 20 additional minutes of drama, music and sound not included in the 1984 release, which won 8 Academy Awards at the 1985 Oscars.

Described by Shaffer as “a fantasia based on fact”, the film was inspired by persistent rumours in the early 19th Century that Mozart had been poisoned by his rival, Salieri, a successful court composer driven mad by the revelation of his own mediocrity when compared to Mozart’s God-given genius.
