Back in 2005 those of us here at Gilson College began to reflect on how our College had been richly blessed over the years. In mid 1996 we had been voted for closure, however that action was delayed and as we took our challenges to the Lord our circumstances began to change.

When the finances began to improve it was felt that we should begin to focus on how we can help others and so we began the process of looking

for an international mission focus. Shortly thereafter I was approached by a couple of businessmen who asked whether we were interested in assisting and supporting an orphanage in Myanmar.

In 2005 the first trip to Myanmar took place and since then we have continued the relationship with Hope Orphanage and since then added to the list of people we help. There is now a second orphanage (Peace) as well as three schools that we financially support. Furthermore we fund around 20 teachers in villages around the country and change lives.

Each year we take a team of students into Myanmar and this year 34 of us made our way into south-east Asia and spent time embedded in the school helping students acquire English language competency. This is long road and a journey that will take some years. Our first supported school in Yangon has grown from 300 to 650 and has received funding for a new building via the Seventh-day Adventist global offering. Now we are assisting another school in the countryside and we’ll try to get more information out to you about this.

It is also appropriate that we thank our school community for the many ways that people have taken on our project and assisted with fundraising. From parents (and friends of parents) we have had many people show the true spirit of generosity and we know that the people who receive the help appreciate this greatly.

A big thank you to the students who went on this year’s trip – you were fantastic. I know that the impact you had was significant – read the attached letter from the Myanmar students to you!

As I have previously said if we look at all of the suffering and problems there are in the world we will be overwhelmed. However I equally believe that to stand by and do nothing is a weakness. Rather we simply choose where we can help and then set about making the world a better place. We do it one step at a time. I also believe this does not go unnoticed by our Heavenly Father. You may remember Sir Winston Churchill’s comment where he stated “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

It's worth a thought.

WARRNAMBOOL SERVICE CAMP 2019 REFLECTIONS

Warrnambool was a life-changing experience. It really opened my eyes to the idea of service. It showed me what an impact one person can make in one minute. Whether it was planting trees, giving a child a high five, or cleaning a dirty restroom. It really demonstrated to me the idea of service. Prior to this camp, the idea of service was very foreign, but this camp really changed all of that. Warrnambool also provided me with so many lifelong memories. It was such a great and enriching

experience. -Isaac, 9KJI had fun serving children

through puppetry. Doing service around the community gave me a happy and warm feeling, knowing that I’d positively impacted it. My favourite part of camp was the light show, because it was fun and a new experience. A lesson I gained from camp was that serving others and the community can make you feel great happiness. - Briana, 9KJ.

My favourite thing about Warrnambool was the beaches, they were really beautiful and clear unlike the beaches in Melbourne. - Anon, 9CA

Helping out with planting and cutting down weeds were fun to do and it will make an impact on the environment in the future. - Ethan, 9KJ

My favourite part of the camp was the boat ride where we saw seals and rode around a mountain that used to be a volcano a few centuries back, which explained the igneous rocks. It is now home to Australian and New Zealand seals. Warrnambool takes effort to preserve their natural heritage. - Nadia, 9KR

The highlight of Warrnambool, for me, was walking down the beach while carrying plants that we were going to plant for the birds. - Jerry, 9KJ

Overall, Warrnambool

Page 8: Warrnambool Service Camp...Gilson College – A Whole Year 12 Group Photo has been taken. ONLINE ORDERING Your school’s photos are available for secure online ordering. 4 EASY STEPS

Page 8

was a great experience. I loved seeing the kids so happy and excited when you handed them balloons. - Francesca, 9KJ

Some highlights about Warrnambool camp were definitely worship time and dinner time. Every worship we were able to listen to different teachers’ stories about their journey with God. Dinner time was the part of the day where everyone would all be in one room and the room would be filled with joy and laughter. A lesson I can take away from this experience is that, even the littlest thing can brighten someone’s day – even if it’s face painting a really weird picture on a child’s face because that’s what they wanted, it can make their day. - Chaneil, 9KJ

At Warrnambool camp, I got to meet new people and made some new friends. I also learned

to be independent. - Tuong, 9KJI especially liked the boat

ride and how we could enjoy the ride as well as seeing different types of seals (Australian - New Zealand). We even got to see cute baby seals up close (30cm) - Anon, 9KR

I got to see the smiles on many faces during my time in Warrnambool, but especially the people at Lyndoch Living (an aged care facility). I had the privilege of seeing some of the old people crying (because they were touched by our visit) and I hugged one of them. That was my highlight. Another highlight would be when I was clowning at a pre-school and when I ran away (as part of the act), they all ran after me and tackled me. - Ryan, 9NN
