The newly formed CAK Elementary Health Council is committed to good nutrition, but proper hydration is an often overlooked component of good health.

“When we consider that 85% of the brain is water, it stands to reason that the brain draws most of its energy from water,” explains Health Council member Judy Cunningham. “Adequate hydration is essential for good brain function and concentration.”

In an attempt to improve daily hydra-tion, the Health Council has designed and produced a plastic water bottle that has been approved for classroom use. The bottles sell for $2.00 each, and many parents purchased theirs at the Elementary Open House last month. The water bottles are also for sale at the Elementary reception desk.

Power Your Day, the H2O Way

In addition to striving toward healthy hydration, a volunteer parent-operated salad bar is now available for Elementary students each Friday to accompany pizza servings. A side salad of the following options: romaine lettuce, tomato, carrots, broccoli, cheese, sunfl ower seeds, and ranch dressing will be off ered for $1.50. From the Desk of Frank Merry:Does Your Company Match Charitable Gifts? Many people don’t realize that their company will match charitable gifts up to a certain level, eff ectively doubling or even tripling donations to non-profi t organizations like CAK. For example, let’s assume you work for Coca-Cola and are led to donate $500 to CAK’s 2008-2009 Annual Fund. Coke currently matches gifts at a 2:1 ratio, meaning they will give CAK an addi-tional $1,000 as a matching gift to your generosity. In total, the school would receive $1,500.

All that is required for matching gifts is for you to obtain a matching gifts form from your company’s personnel or human resources department. You would then submit your check and the form to the CAK Business Offi ce and let us handle the rest. All companies that have matching gift programs do set limits on how much they will match (for example, Coke’s limit is $4,000), but having any matching gift is better than none at all!

CAK has provided a link on the school website (www.cakwarriors.com) that allows you to search and see if your company has a matching gifts program. Not all companies publish their program, so it is also advisable to check directly with your HR department if you don’t fi nd your business in the online database.

Frank Merry is the CAK Development Director. He can be reached at Ext. 177 or [email protected]. Frank’s office is located in the Campus Center.

Keep On Shopping for CAK!In addition to giving via the Annual Fund, Capital Campaign, and Endowment, or participating in one of our special events, you can also choose to support Christian Academy of Knoxville through your everyday purchases.

LAND’S END

The next time you purchase uniforms and supplies from Land’s End, either online or via mail, make sure to use CAK’s school code for 3% to be returned to the school: 900026261.

GOOD SEARCH

Don’t “Google it,” -- “GoodSearch it!” Each time you search the Internet using GoodSearch, 1 cent goes to CAK. Simply type CAK into the “Who do you GoodSearch for?” bar before each search.

TARGET

When you use your Target Visa or Target Red Card, Target will donate up to 1% of purchases to CAK. You may designate CAK online at www.target.com/tcoe, by calling 1-800-316-6142, or at the kiosk in your local Target store. Our CAK School ID at Target is: 23446. KROGER When you shop at Kroger, use your Kroger Plus card to pay for groceries. You must make sure CAK is coded into your Kroger card prior to checkout. To do this, simply take the barcode below to your local store and have it scanned into your Plus card. CAK receives up to 5% of all grocery purchases made in this way. PLEASE NOTE: Plus cards must be re-coded each school year!

Middle School Football Off to a Strong Start Warrior Middle School football started the season with two shut-out games, beating Harriman 24-0 and defending AAA Champion Robertsville-Oak Ridge 12-0. The young Warriors have worked very hard to reach this point, and Coach Treadway would like to acknowledge the following out-standing players:

Russell August

A.J. Camarda (team captain) William Gass (team captain) Charlie High (team captain) Davis Howell (team captain) Josh Smith

The next games of the season are September 15 vs. Jeff erson (at home) and September 18 vs. Rockwood (also at home).

After months of planning and practice, the inaugural season of Christian Youth Football in Knox County is now in full-force. With three teams in the Knox County football league, the Warriors started the season in high-gear with a win over rival Catholic. Team general manager and league commissioner, Jeff Taylor, has organized three teams for 2008. With 9-, 10-, and 11-year-old teams, participants have entered competitive play with controlled growth. Currently, CAK has 68 youth participating and will add 8- and 12-year-old teams in 2009.

“Without funds and equipment, I had many sleepless nights last spring prior to sign-ups,” explains Taylor. “But when it all came together, God blessed us with great par-ents, coaches, and sponsors who provided us with every-thing we need.”

Taylor would like to thank his wife, Coaches Rusty Bradley, Ron Treadway, and Ray Pinkstaff for advice and guid-ance, and the CAK administration for use of the practice fields. Jeff is already looking for coaches and players for the 8- and 9-year-old teams for the 2009 season. He may be reached at (865) 765-2119.

New Families Enjoy Welcome Dinner,

CAK Beats Cherokee in Season Home-Opener

There were several new faces on the Christian Academy of Knoxville

football fi eld Friday, Aug. 29, but that didn’t stop them from over-

powering Cherokee High School, with a fi nal score of 45-21. Most of

the CAK points were scored in the fi rst half, while Warrior starting

players were still on the fi eld. The Chiefs weren’t able to score more

than once until CAK head football coach Rusty Bradley gave his

second-string players some game experience....

“When it was 38-7 [at halft ime] I wanted to get one more drive with

our [fi rst string players] in the second half. Once it was 45-7, I was

ready to substitute and get our younger guys lined up,” Bradley

said....

The 45 Warrior points were distributed throughout the team.

Matt hew Warren scored his fi rst fi eld goal of the season in the fi rst

quarter. All other points were earned through touchdowns. Tailback

Keenan Kolinsky ran for two scores, quarterback Michael Fromke

passed to Ryan Brooksbank, Blake Houser and Quinn Epperly,

for three touchdowns, and Fromke scored an additional touchdown

when he ran the ball for 66 yards in the second quarter...

CAK Learning Center Serves All Kinds of Learners

In I Corinthians 12:4-27, Paul teaches about the spiritual gifts given to each member of the body of Christ “for the common good” of other believers and the world. These gifts, talents, and abilities are evidence of God’s plan for us to be His “arms and legs” to the world. The faculty and staff at CAK seek to teach in cooperation with God in drawing out each student’s spiritual gifts and talents to further God’s purposes in our community. Every student expresses their spiritual gifts diff erently, leading to an exciting and creative world! Some of us are linguistic while others are logical and mathematical. Some are spatial or body-kinesthetic; others interpret information in a

more musical manner. Some people are extremely gifted with interpersonal skills while others are more introspec-tive. None of us has just one gift or talent. CAK understands that we must teach to the whole student by addressing not only academic and athletic abilities, but also to the spiritual gifts. The CAK Learning Center helps students express their knowledge and assists them in acquiring additional skills when needed. There are many forms of learning assistance available. Details of Learning Center programs for all three schools, as well as a directory of qualifi ed tutors, is available online at www.cakwarriors.com (click “Learning Center”). Or you may contact Nancy

Parrott at (865) 690-4721, ext. 199 or [email protected].
