Enhanced Learning Delivered to CAK’s Elementary SchoolBy: Jim Lawson, 3rd grade parent

As you read this newsletter, I imagine you’re looking for highlights of how our children are doing with academics and how our school is stacking up against the competition. Me too, and I must tell you, you’re really going to enjoy the next few minutes of reading.

Most can remember the challenges of sitting still and paying attention all day in a classroom, or how much better you could have done in class if you would have been able to sit in the front row. Well, our Elementary School is helping solve that issue and taking the classroom environment to the next level with enhanced learning.

Fourteen classrooms in the Elemen-tary School are now equipped with specialized sound fi eld systems for teacher voice amplifi cation. These systems look much like a surround sound theater system, but they are much more. Continued on page 3...

High School Artists Show Work and Win Awards

The reception for the juried show of Scholastic

Art took place at the Emporium Center for Arts

and Culture in downtown Knoxville on Sunday,

February 8. The CAK students honored for their

work were: Rose Zelenak -- Honorable Mention

in Soft Pastel; Amanda Mayo -- Honorable Mention

in Mixed Media; Joedie Miller -- Honorable

Mention and Silver Key in Soft Pastels; Ellie

Ferguson -- Silver Key in Self-Portrait; and

Brooke Griffith -- Gold Key in Self-Portrait.

Congratulations to these students for their

artistic success!

In addition to the Scholastic Art competition,

Brooke Griffith made it through the rigorous

competition for Governor’s School for the Arts

in June. Allie Storhe was chosen as an alter-

nate to the Governor’s School. Congratulations to

both for their hard work and making it through

the competitive interview process.

Mrs. Moran’s first semester digital photography

class created books featuring their own photography.

The books include each student’s work and

make a great piece of artwork for all to enjoy.

Find an art student who owns one and ask to

check it out. You will be amazed!

Reenrollment Packets DueReenrollment packets were mailed to homes in early February and were due back by March 1. A late fee of $50 must accompany all forms turned in after March 1. If you

do not intend to reenroll your student(s) for the 2009-

2010 school year, please contact Laura Duncan at (865)

690-4721, ext. 141 or [email protected].

Financial Aid or Excellent Facilities? Why CAK Students Need Access to Both

Donors usually want to know where their gifts are

most needed. Should a gift go towards maintaining

affordable tuition or to help expand classroom space?

Should we accelerate our academic offerings or pay

down debt? Should I give to the Annual Fund or the

Pressin’ On campaign?

The answer to all the above questions is both!

In these economic times, donations are even more

critical to the life and success of CAK, and to the

students we are educating. Gifts to the Annual Fund

address operating needs, while gifts to the Pressin’ On

campaign address capital improvements.

Gifts to the Annual Fund support:-- Affordable tuition levels and a robust financial aid program;-- A continued commitment to the best in teacher training;-- An accelerated ability to introduce excellent academic programs;-- Aggressive efforts to pay down debt on school facilities; and-- Additional efforts to compensate our faculty and staff.

Gifts to the Pressin’ On campaign support:-- The remodel and expansion of the Middle School (complete);-- The expansion of the High School (complete);-- And the push to construct a cafeteria/commons space for the Elementary and Middle School.

To make a contribution to the Annual Fund or Pressin’

On campaign, simply visit our secure online giving

webpage (accessible from www.cakwarriors.com), or

mail your donation to the address below. Thank you

for your commitment to quality Christian education.

Voice Amplifi cation, continued from page 1

The specialized speakers and transmitters are specifi cally designed to enhance the phonologic skills of the students. The concerns with your child sitting on the back row or at the farthest point away from the teacher are now removed.

Clinical trials in countless school districts across the country confi rm higher test scores (PAT and SAT) should be expected. Milwaukee public schools already have over 140 sound field systems in place. Carol Flexer, professor of audiology at University of Akron, Ohio says that “children’s auditory systems are not fully developed until they are teenagers and there is a direct link between listening and literacy.” In addition to improving our children’s test scores, studies also confi rm that when using a classroom sound fi eld system children are more attentive, have increased on-task behavior, have reduced disruptive behaviors, and demonstrate an overall improved understanding of instructions.

Another major benefi t with sound fi eld systems is reduced vocal strain for our teachers. The system overcomes the problems associated with distance and noise allowing our teachers to teach using a normal voice. Not only do the classrooms have more harmony, but our teachers are likely to go home a little less tired.

Our Elementary School has raised the bar for all classrooms, and I sincerely thank Ms. Mary Beth Jones and the entire CAK elementary staff for taking our children’s Christian education very seriously.

“Chefs” in Christian Academy of Knoxville’s fi rst-grade

classes cooked up a real treat for their mothers for

Valentine’s Day. Moms were invited to “dine” at Cupid’s

Café, where good books were on the menu. Students

circulated the room with their menu, a list of children’s

books, and each mother picked the story of her choice.

After a quick run to the “kitchen,” chefs returned to read

the stories aloud to their mothers and the mothers of

their classmates.

Remote Area Medical Visits Chapel

Elementary students were in for a real treat in February

when aid organization Remote Area Medical (RAM) visited

Chapel. RAM founder, Steve Brock, has a passion for animals.

For many years, Brock was the host of the television show

“Wild Kingdom.” Today he travels the country and the

world collecting supplies and hosting free medical and

veterinary clinics across the globe. Elementary students

collected dozens of supplies for RAM, including tooth-

brushes, shampoo, and soap. Brock and his team will use

these supplies in the clinics.

Teachers are Stars on CAK’s Book Posters

The American Library Association promotes reading through celebrity book endorsements, but you don’t have to be a movie star to promote reading! Some of CAK’s very own “celebrities” -- our teachers -- will be the “stars” of a new set of posters to be displayed throughout the schools. Look for your teacher on a poster with his or her favorite book!

Christian Academy of Knoxville is blessed with talent,

which was evident as the curtain opened for the school’s

12th Annual Spirit of Praise Talent Show on January 30.

Twenty-fi ve acts took the stage in the elementary portion

of the competition, and an additional 18 middle and high

school students performed in the upper grades portion.

Singing duo Kari Beth Propes (4th grade) and Erika Taylor

(3rd grade) stole the fi rst place prize among Elementary

participants for their vocal rendition of Big House. In the

Middle and High School division, 12th-grader Joedie

Miller took fi rst place from the piano bench with Khacha-

turian’s Toccata in D fl at. Christian Academy of Knoxville is

proud of the many talented students showcased at the

event, especially Senior Thomas Waldrupe who kept the

crowd entertained and amused as the egregious emcee.

Other winner for the evening included: Emma Sentell,

Madeline Mixner, Song Dillon, David VanderSteeg,

Clark Buckner, and Kayla Allsop.

Talent Show Winners Include Singing Duo and Pianist

Above: CAK 5th-grader, Madeline

Mixner, performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in the school’s annual talent show. Madeline tied for 2nd place in the elementary competition with soloist Emma

Sentell (3rd grade).
