CAK Golf Tournament Needs Your Support

How Can I Help? Please consider the ways you can

play a role in the success of the

21st Annual Warrior ShootOut.

We challenge each CAK family to

increase their level of participa-

tion in this year’s event. Let’s put

a personal touch on the green!

Play on a team!

Organize a team from your

workplace or neighborhood

Volunteer at the event in the

morning or afternoon (or both!)

Make a fi nancial contribution

Ask your company to make a

contribution or become a sponsor

Publicize the event in your

workplace, business, neighbor-

hood, and church

Forward the new website

link, www.WarriorShootOut.com,

to your friends and family

Pray for the success of

the event and for the planning

committee and volunteers

Golfers, get your clubs out and work

on your swing because the Warrior

ShootOut is just around the corner.

The tournament, considered to be

one of the best of its kind in East Ten-

nessee, promises to be better than

ever in 2008. Scheduled for Friday,

September 19 at Rarity Pointe,

golfers choose to play the morning

round, afternoon round, or both!

Now in its 21st year, the Warrior

ShootOut plays an integral part in

the fundraising efforts at CAK. The

proceeds from this event go to

several areas of school life. Part is

given to tuition assistance to help

those families who could not attend

CAK without this support, and part is

set aside for the purchase of edu-

cational materials and equipment

to help continue our tradition of

education with excellence.

In addition to the fi nancial benefi ts CAK

receives from this annual tournament,

the school also gains positive exposure

in the Knoxville community by hosting a

friendly, enjoyable experience for partici-

pants, volunteers, and sponsors.

But, the planning committee can’t do it

alone. We need your smiling faces on

the green! Volunteers are needed to

work morning and/or afternoon shifts

at the tournament. Volunteer activities

include: “manning” the holes, preparing

refreshments, helping with golfer regis-

tration, and distributing goody bags.

Please contact Jenny Dell at 690-4721,

ext. 143 or [email protected] to help.

Visit the brand new golf

tournament website at

www.WarriorShootOut.com!

The new Warrior ShootOut website is up and run-ning at www.WarriorShootOut.com. Participants, volunteers, and sponsors may now register online.

The start of a new school year

is often the beginning of many

new additions to one’s life:

new classmates, new carpool,

and often a new school.

We are welcoming many new

families to CAK this year. We

believe that each family is sent

by God to bless and be blessed.

In order to welcome our new

families properly we would

like to invite all brand new

CAK families to the 2008 New

Family Welcome Dinner! The

New Family Welcome Dinner

is for all new CAK families and

host families (and, yes, parents,

your children are allowed to

bring you). Here is what you

need to know:

This is a fun family outing. Get

to know some of the other

CAK families whose children

are in the same grade as your

students. Enjoy a casual, tasty

meal catered by Backyard

Burger, and then head out to

cheer for the Warriors in their

first home football game of the

season!

Please RSVP for your family

(include your name and the

number of people who will be

attending) by August 21. You

may RSVP by contacting Jenny

Dell in the CAK office at (865)

690-4721, ext. 143, or at jdell@

cakmail.org.

We look forward to meeting

you and officially welcoming

you to the CAK family!

CAK libraries can always use volunteers to

assist the library staff. This is a great way to

help the school and learn more about what

our libraries have to offer. Additionally, we are

looking for substitutes for the library. Please

contact Diana Holden, Head Librarian, at 690-

4721, ext. 124 or [email protected] for

more information.

Middle School Students Make History During “Geek Week”Live Webcast Connects CAK & Sudan

Above: Students gather around the computer to learn about life in Sudan. Right: Ms. Henderlight shows CAK students how Sudanesechildren dance at church (by jumping up and down!)

On July 17, a group of inquisitive Middle School stu-

dents participated in a live webcast between CAK and

students at a primary school in Sudan -- the first broad-

cast of its kind to take place at the Academy. Led by

Anita Henderlight of New Sudan Education Initiative and

Middle School Math teacher, Ms. Pearman, CAK students

prepared questions about sports, food, weather, school,

hobbies, and religious persecution to ask the group of

Sudanese 7th graders.

“One of the kids wants us to ask, ‘Do you like pie?,’” said

CAK 7th grader Ashley Keller. “I also want to ask ‘What

sports do you play?’ and ‘What is a typical school day

like?’”

The Sudanese students (girls ages 15-22) met CAK in

cyberspace via a single computer, run by a gas-powered

generator, sitting outside of a tent. It was a stark con-

trast to the high-tech Middle School computer lab with

25 computers and a big screen!

After communicating through visual images, audio, and

typing, the CAK Middle School group discussed the ex-

perience: “I thought the houses would look like they did,

but I figured the schools would be better,” commented

one student. Mud homes, thatch roofs, and schools

without walls or chairs are common sights in South

Sudan. The resounding sentiment from all CAK students

was “We are so blessed!”
